• The Royal Opera House is a world-class theatre for opera and ballet, an important provider of education initiatives for children and adults from across the UK, and one of London's most beautiful buildings.But it is also a charity. We could not maintain our reputation, our outreach projects, or indeed our looks, without the support of our patrons.

FACTS AND FIGURES• The Royal Opera House has charitable status and is a national institution seeking to involve and engage

with as many people as possible.• Just a few of the ways we do this are via our extensive range of programmes and events for young people,

our commitment to keeping ticket prices down, and through directing most of our resources to front-line performance, education and outreach.

• In our 2008/09 season:• • In the main auditorium we attracted total audiences of more than 630,000.

• Main stage audiences were 93% of capacity.• Generated more than £2 for ever £1 of public subsidy.• Ninth successive year of positive cash balance.• Almost 40,000 visitors to the Newham Town Show in July were treated to an original opera in partnership with ROH Education.• Our work was seen across the country on 18 screens via BP Summer Big Screen and BBC presentations, giving almost 25,000 people the chance to experience it.

Visiting the Collections

• ROH Collections online offers access to the rich and varied materials that record the history of the three theatres that have stood on the Covent Garden site since 1732.  The accompanying Performance Database provides comprehensive information on all works performed by The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera since 1946. Now you can browse the Performance Database and interact with some of the Collections' highlights in the ROH Collections Catalogue at rohcollections.org.uk. You can also see items and materials from the Collections in person by visiting our exhibitions at the Royal Opera House and on tour. For researchers working on a specific project, the office is open three days a week.

Backstage Tours

• Main House Event• Visit the Backstage and the Front of House areas of one of the

world's leading theatres as it prepares to open its doors for the evening performance.

• The Backstage Tours include an introduction to the colourful history of the theatre, an insight into the redevelopment of the Royal Opera House and a look at aspects of current productions. As the Royal Opera House is a fully working theatre, each tour is a unique experience, and may include opportunities to see The Royal Ballet in class, or the magnificent backstage technology in operation.

• Please note: All tours vary according to what is available on the day and a visit to the auditorium is not guaranteed; it is never possible to attend stage rehearsals. Remember that you are visiting a working theatre and plans may change at short notice. Photography is not permitted on backstage tours.
