The ROTOR

Thursday, August 23, 2018

Registration: PDG Peter Neufeldt was on double duty today on Registration and the 50/50 while Sherry

McKinnon extended the hand of welcome to those coming through the doors. As is most often the case, Doreen

Pankewich managed credit card payments.

Lead Table: seated

with President John

were Doreen

Pankewich, Berenice

Beau (former Inbound

Exchange student-

pictured right with

Sherry), Shreedhar

Jachak, Jack Wozniak,

PDG Peter Neufeldt,

Louis Browne.

Welcome: President

John welcomed

everyone to Eastview

and led us in the

national anthem, followed by Rotary Grace.

Berenice Beau was an inbound exchange student from France a few years ago. She tells us it was a year that

made a huge impact on her life. It is rewarding to Rotarians to have Berenice return for a visit. Safe travels in

the future, Berenice.

Philosophy: From “Getting Old Ain’t for Wimps” by Karen O’Conner: “Don’t complain about growing old,

Sergeant at Arms: As Sergeant Pat Dell came to the podium, President John

was getting out his wallet. He had inadvertently forgot to call the Sergeant until

reminded by several well-meaning individuals. The Sergeant had a short lecture

and fine for John for his misdemeanor. Jizinge was also in trouble as he was

supposed to be handling the 50/50 so he also received a fine from the Sergeant for

not paying attention to phone messages and emails. Past President Richard was

also reprimanded for not realizing he is a Past President and that he must donate to

the Past Presidents’ Garden Party. Rotobucks were distributed to the four

dedicated Eastviewians who packed backpacks for the Salvation Army’s Back to

School project: Doreen Pankewich, Hans Gaastra, Ann Grahame and Chris

Hefner.

Well done Rotarians. Happy Bucks: Peter Peters

confessed that he had not taken a picture of Hostess Pat

at the barbecue. He also expressed thanks to those who

had supported his Bike Tour for M.S. The group

experienced their highest earning ever (more later).

Doug Mortin had happy bucks and much pride in

younger daughter, Andrea, who completed an Ironman

competition in Mont Tremblant, Quebec last week. She

completed it in 12 hours, 15 minutes and ended in the top

half of the competition. Well done Andrea. Andrea is a

former Outbound Exchange student from Eastview to

Argentina. Peter Neufeldt had happy bucks for the

$8000 raised by District 5550 Rotarians so far for a Bronco scholarship. It is hoped

the amount will increase to $10,000. This would allow for an annual scholarship for 5 years of $2000 to a

Bronco team member who demonstrates Service above Self and has strong academic abilities. Ann paid tribute

to Pat and Glen for the wonderful garden party. Pat paid tribute to husband Glen who did a huge amount of

work for the barbecue.

50/50: Gord Wicjiowsky drew the winning ticket today but alas, he also drew blue. Better luck next time. The

amount raised today was $42.

Program: President John introduced Eastview member, Shreedhar

Jachak, to speak about “Karma”. Shreedhar told us that Karma means

actions and that every action has an equal and opportion reaction. It is a

concept common to Hinduism. One’s duty is to do the Karma. The

results are not in our hands. He offered spiritual quotes “You are the

master of your destiny. You make/decide your own future. Do unto

others as you would wish done to you.”

Shreedhar noted that birth is due to accumulated Karma (Sanchit).

There are multiple births. The types of Karma are: accululated over

serveral life times; actions during the present life time; Day to day

Rotary Club of Regina Eastview’s 2018-2019 Inbound Youth Exchange Student Thomas Van der Maren will

arrive at YQR from his home in Belgium on Friday, August 24th at 5:33 PM via Calgary. Please mark your

calendar and join us at the airport to welcome Thomas to our city and province. He will appreciate seeing all

of you and instantly know of your support of the Youth Exchange program and of his year with us. Doug

Mortin, Inbound Counselor.

actions. Spiritual qualities: lover, affection, compassion; dictated by life (actions); anger jealousy and hatred.

How to deal with the results of a Karma: offer the results to divinity. Thank you Shreedhar for enlightening us

on Karma and its complexity.

Announcements:

Doreen Pankewich announced that

members now have the option to purchase

prepaid lunch tickets for 23/lunch. They

can only be purchased with a cheque or

cash from Doreen, Allen or Ron.

Ann noted that India is experiencing its

worst floods in history. Shelter Boxes

cannot be sent to India as the

Government does not allow them in the

country as they are not manufactured in India. She can provide information as to how assistance can be

provided to India if anyone wishes to contribute.

Photos of Peters' Pedalers Plus from the South

Saskatchewan MS Bike Tour which was "head

quartered" in Avonlea this year. We were a team of 7

this year -2 were Peters and 5 were from the "Plus"

rank. Collectively we delivered $12,630.00 for the

cause, with a minimum of an additional $600.00 yet

to be tallied in. (l to r) Tim, Blaine, Peter, Jim, Ward

and two first time cyclists Justin and Kandace. After

cycling the initial 57.9 km, 4 of us chose to do the

42.6 km challenge route. We are pictured at the turn

around point where we just had a windy 21.3 km

left.” From Peter Peters

THE SALVATION ARMY BACK PACKERS

(Courtesy of Ann Grahame)

The Salvation Army

once again purchased

supplies (from

donations) for

backpacks for children

returning to school

this fall. Rotarians

from the Rotary clubs

of Industrial Parks,

Eastview and the

South Club along with

some of their families

gathered to fill the

backpacks with various

supplies suitable to

different age groups.

The need is greater

than the supply.

However over 1000 children will receive paper, pencils, pens,

binders, crayons, and other supplies according to their age group,

and benefit from the efforts of the Salvation Army and their

helpers. Thanks to the four Eastviewians (above) who offered

their help to this worthwhile project.

A reminder of the many good things that go on in Regina!

THE ANNUAL GARDEN PARTY AT PAT AND GLEN’S

(Pictures courtesy of Peter Peters and Ann Grahame)

By all reports, it was a fine day, good food and fellowship. Thanks to Pat and Glen for once again hosting this

special event. Thank you to Peter and Ann for the pictures below which capture the spirit of the beautiful day--

the hamburgers, the homemade ice cream, the salads, the spacious yard, the sunshine, the fellowship, gracious

hosts—it all makes for a wonderful tradition.

A tip of the Eastview hat to hosts Pat and Glen from

the members of Eastview.

Your generosity year after year is so

appreciated. Even the weather cooperates

for this event. Thank you from all of us.
