Master PRLS 2, planned public speaking, held this last Saturday at
the Santa Maria Inn, for this series, is now in the books. One more to go,
Master PRLS 5, to be held February 6th, is the final of this series
and is also the graduation ceremony.
Why do these Rotarians, many who are Presidents Elect, come to these seminars? Many can already get up in front of an audience and speak and many do it quite well.
The answer, as expounded by these Rotarians themselves, is that they know, without a doubt that they will be even better public speakers after these classes, and the better they are, the better they can fulfill their roles, not just as officers, but also as Rotarians in general.
Why spend the effort to prepare and give a talk and only be 60% effective? With the training you receive at these MPRLS seminars, perhaps you could be 90% effective. Sounds like a “win win” to me.
This so far only considers the two public speaking classes. What about being more effective at “Facilitation Skills”? (effective goal setting and problem solving) How about being better at “Situational Leadership”? (how to judge the skills development of team members, fit the right people into the right jobs and define the leadership principals required in order to manage any team effectively)
How about being better with “Project Management”.
All of this is free to all of us, at least in this club. Why not spent a few Sat-urdays with some really good Rotarians, enjoy a good lunch and improve your abilities and become even more effective at what ever you decide to do in Rotary, your business life and yes, even in your personal lives.
Another goodie is you don’t even have to leave town. One of the students and several of the instructors come from China Lake. What does that say about the value of PRLS and the dedication of the instructors?
It is my opinion that everyone in this club should be taking PRLS, even if you have taken it before. Especially all officers!
Do this. It is a “win win” for everyone. The next session starts
July 17, 2010. Yep, to be sure, I have the details and will be happy to help you get registered. Also, I will be there to share a very enjoyable day with you.

I had my baby Molly Margaret Louise Fothergill on January 8th. 8 lbs 4 oz. She was actually born on her namesake's birthday which is pretty amazing. Submitted by Karen Fothergill
Former long time member Norm Buvick recently passed away. Many of the older members will remember him as the
local petroleum distributor. Submitted by Tom Martinez
I saw Jack Adam last night at his grandsons soccer game. Submitted by Scott Dunn
I don’t have anything Frank but I would like to thank you for everything you do to keep us informed, entertained, and
feeling like a community! Submitted by Tara Lefranc
The forecast is calling for sunshine on Saturday and Sunday and again Wednesday through the weekend.
Submitted by Victor Tognazzini
My sincere thanks to all of you who sent in this “Sunshine” information. I know that Hank Datter, and others, who can’t always be at our meetings, will enjoy sharing what we know. That is what this is all about, in my opinion. This is, as Tara points out, the community of Rotary.

Winemaker
Ariki (Rick) Hill, a New Zealand native commenced his winemaking career whilst working fulltime in the dairy industry in New Zealand in 1985. An opportunity to manage dairy operations in the Middle East curtailed his early enthusiasm, but was reig-nited when he studied oenology at Charles
Sturt University, Australia in 1992.
A career change to the fruit juice industry and the flexibility of a non-seasonal work sched-ule gave Rick the opportunity to undertake a wine internship in Santa Barbara County, Cali-
fornia.
His interest and obsession was Pinot Noir and he was ideally placed. In 2000, after founding Labyrinth, Rick produced his first commercial vintage, sourcing Pinot Noir from the famed
Bien Nacido Vineyard.
The following year he teamed up with friend
and mentor, now wife, Lane Tanner.
In 2002, Labyrinth produced it's inaugural vin-tage in the Yarra Valley, Australia, exclusively Pinot Noir. A lifestyle change in 2004 meant
relocation to the U.S.
In 2007, Rick expanded the portfolio to include full bodied reds predominantly
from the Paso Robles region under the Haka label.

CHEF RICK MANSON
“LITTLE IN LIFE IS CERTAIN, BUT THREE THINGS ARE GUARANTEED. DEATH, TAXES, AND A GREAT MEAL AT CHEF RICK’S ULTI-
MATELY FINE FOODS.
LIKE A CHOSEN FEW BEFORE HIM, CHEF RICK IS THAT RARE BREED OF CHEF THAT ALWAYS MAKES MIND-BENDING, ABSOLUTELY DELI-CIOUS FOOD ON THEIR OWN TERMS WHILE
STILL APPEALING TO A WIDE AUDIENCE.”
THE UP-TEMPO AMERICAN COOKING PRE-PARED BY ONE OF THE CENTRAL COAST’S PREMIER CHEFS, RICK MANSON, IS A BLEND OF SOUTHERN LOUISIANA, SOUTHWEST, AND SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA INFLUENCES, SEA-SONED WITH A HINT OF RHYTHM AND BLUES, A SPLASH OF COLOR, AND A TOUCH OF IR-
REVERENCE.
RICK, THE SON OF THE TRUEST FOOD AMER-ICA EVER PRODUCED, AFRICAN AMERICAN FUNK, SPANISH-MEXICAN SIZZLE AND THE BOUILLABAISSE THAT IS SOUTH-ERN CALIFORNIA-WHIPPED IT ALL TOGETHER INTO A STYLISH SOUL SOUF-FLÉ AND PLACED IT IN A SETTING LIKE NO OTHER. EVEN THOUGH HE WAS DOING IT IN A STRIP MALL IN ORCUTT, CALIFORNIA, RICK WAS BEING ONE
OF THE QUINTESSENTIAL AMERICAN CHEF’S OF HIS GENERATION.
CHEF RICK BEGAN EARNING CRITICAL ACCLAIM AS EXECUTIVE CHEF FOR 10 YEARS OF THE KING AND PRINCE HOTEL ON HISTORIC ST. SIMONS IS-LAND, GEORGIA. CHEF RICK’S CONSISTENTLY EARNS “BEST RESTAURANT IN SANTA MARIA” AWARD IN THE SANTA MARIA SUN. SLECTED FOR HIS INDEFATIGABLE SUPPORT AND ENTHUSIASM IN FUR-THERING CULINARY EXCELLENCE ON THE CENTRAL COAST, ARCHIE HAS
SAID OF RICK, “THE GUY IS A PRINCE.”
