Making his fourth appearance as a speaker at RCBS, wildlife saviour Edwin Weik described his pioneering activities to help save wildlife in Thailand, which has involved him in a number of dramatic confrontations with the authorities and vested interests. Originally from Holland, Edwin Weik left school at the age of 17, and joined the army, where he served in the Special Forces. Following his 3-year army career, he joined the family fashion business, which eventually brought him to Hong Kong and Thailand. In 1989 he moved to Thailand, and after a life-changing car accident in 1999, Edwin decided to devote his life to a worthwhile cause. Given a monkey as a gift, he found that there was nowhere in Thailand where he could place the animal for safe keeping, so in 2001 he decided to set up a foundation to look after animals which had suffered at the hands of humans or bred in captivity. The Wildlife Friends Foundation (WFF) now looks after more than 400 animals, including elephants, bears, gibbons, deer, snakes and exotic birds. Located near Hua Hin, the Foundation operates a veterinary clinic, an Elephant Rescue and Education Centre, and a Wildlife Rescue Centre. The Foundation is staffed mainly by volunteers, and has proven to be a popular attraction for visiting tourists. At last week’s luncheon, Edwin Weik focused on the recent events at the so-called “Tiger Temple” in Kanchanaburi, where 137 large tigers where bred as a lucrative tourist attraction, and dead tiger cubs, animal parts and amulets were likely part of a thriving trade in trafficked species. The removal of the tigers from the temple by Thai authorities follows 13 years of campaigning by the WFF and other concerned individuals, to close down the breeding activities EDWIN WEIK WILDLIFE IN TOURISM SOUTH WIND THE ROTARY CLUB OF BANGKOK SOUTH President : Narain Suradejvibul Immediate Past President : Mike Doyle President Elect & Membership Director : Krin Charnmaytesakul Vice President : Dana Caron Vice President : Joop van Delden Secretary : Finbarr O’Connor Treasurer : John Casella Administration Director : Alastair Timblick Communications Director : Ravi Sehgal Fundraising Director : Tim Cornwall Rotary Foundation Director : Yod Tantianunanont Service Projects Director : Dean Outerson Sergeant at Arms : Songkran Grachangnetara Charter Granted 7 August 1961 facebook.com/RotaryBangkokSouth @RotaryBkkSouth No. 2621 10 th June 2016 Today’s Topic: “A NEW DAWN IN RURAL THAI EDUCATION” Mechai Viravaidya By RTN Roy Howard at Wat Pa Luang Ta Maha Bua Temple. The fate of the tigers is now uncertain, as most animals bred in captivity are unable to fend for themselves when released into the wild. The recent events at the “Tiger Temple” highlight an ongoing problem regarding the welfare of wild animals in Thailand. Loss of habitat and the commercialisation of wild animals sees many more tiger farms in Thailand, plus the breeding and illegal export of birds and other small species. Elephants are also used as tourist attractions, and sometimes forced to work in conditions of extreme heat. The decision by circuses in Europe to end the use of large cats as part of their entertainment, is clearly a move in the right direction. World-wide zoos are also reconsidering their programmes for the breeding and display of animals. Hopefully schools will educate young children to recognise that the best place for wild animals is in their natural habitat and resources will be focused on protecting these habitats.

A group of Bangkok South Rotarians visited last April 26 and 27 the St. Joseph’s Orphanage, known to our Club as the Sister Rita Home located at Betong in the province of Yala in Southern Thailand. RCBS started to provide financial support to the Orphanage during the RY 88-89 during PDG Xanxai Visitkul’s District term as District Governor. The Orphanage was started by Sister Rita a Catholic nun from Sri Lanka to be the home of orphans and abandoned children and later to care also of the aged lacking family support. An Endowment Fund was set with contributions from Rotary Clubs outside Thailand in the amount of over Baht 2.0 million and since then the Fund has been administered by the Foundation Committee of RCBS with the logistic support of the Rotary Club of Betong
