Caring for the soul during summer
My Dear Friends!
As we continue to celebrate our Easter season, we
rejoice in the goodness God has shown by sending
His Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Savior and Redeemer.
His passion, death, and resurrection have destroyed
sin and death, and allow us to share in the very life
and love of God.
The Lord’s grace is very much active in the life of our
parishes. In April, we witnessed our children receiv-
ing First Holy Communion, and we continue to celebrate baptisms and marriag-
es.
On 7 June, we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of
Christ, also known as the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. This celebration enables
us to reflect on Jesus and the gift of Himself in the Eucharist, and as the source
and summit of our lives. He feeds and nourishes us as we make our journey
through this world with our hearts set on our true and eternal home, the kingdom
of heaven. As we believe with all our hearts that Jesus is present in the Eucha-
rist, we ask Him to help us to recognize Him in the faces of those around us, es-
pecially our family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and even strangers
– for in serving them, we love and serve Him.
I was surprised to learn that my application for a visa had been refused by the
immigration authority. After a two-week wait, I was informed that my visa has
been extended. Thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and moral support,
which showed me how much you appreciate my ministry. It increases my
strength to work for God’s people.
Once again, thank you for all you do for our parish by sharing your time, talent,
and treasure. Be assured of my daily prayers for you and have a blessed and safe
summer. May it be a time of renewal not only of mind and body, but also for
your soul. In addition to attending Mass on the weekend, set aside some time for
prayer, spiritual reading, and visits to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Jesus is inviting you to deepen your relationship with Him and to reflect on the
many blessings He has given to you. For as we read in Proverbs 17:22, “A
cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”
–Fredrick Anton Thevaraj, OMI

Liturgical reminders
Remember our First Friday Devotions at VFK on June 5, July 3, and August 7.
These devotions especially recognize the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and through it
offer reparations for sins. In the visions of Christ reported by St. Margaret Mary
Alacoque in the 17th century, several promises were made to those who prac-
ticed the devotions for nine consecutive months, one of which included the grace
of final penitence. Jesus said, “They shall not die in My disgrace nor without
receiving their sacraments.” For more about the devotion to the Sacred Heart of
Jesus, see page 4.

Please note that office hours for the English ministry are Tuesday to Friday,
10:00–12:00 at the telephone number (+45) 4494 7694, Ext. 3.

Three great feasts in June
During the month of June, we celebrate three great feasts. On Sunday, June 7,
we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus
Christi); on Friday, June 12, we celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus;
and on Saturday, June 13, we celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of
Mary (along with Saint Anthony of Padua).
Devotion to the Sacred Heart, as we know it, began in 1672. On repeated
occasions, Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation nun, in
France, and during these apparitions He explained to her the devotion to His Sa-
cred Heart as He wanted people to practice it. He asked to be honored in the
symbol of His Heart of flesh; he asked for acts of reparation, for frequent Com-
munion, Communion on the First Friday of the month, and the keeping of the
Holy Hour.
The Daily Offering to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
My God, I offer You all my prayers,
works, joys, and sufferings in union
with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, for the
intentions for which He pleads and
offers Himself in the Holy Sacrifice of
the Mass, in thanksgiving for Your fa-
vors, in reparation for my sins, and in
humble supplication for my temporal
and eternal welfare, for the needs of
our holy Mother the Church, for the
conversion of sinners, and for the re-
lief of the poor souls in purgatory.
Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary grew up in parallel but more
slowly than that of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It became prominent
through the work of St John Eudes, who was born in 1601 in Normandy, France.
It did not become really well known until after the Apparitions at Rue du Bac
concerning the “Miraculous Medal” made to Catherine Labouré in 1830, and the
establishment of a society dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, at the
Church of Our Lady of Victories in Paris in 1836. Since then, devotion to the
Immaculate Heart of Mary, has gradually grown more widespread in the Church,
particularly since the apparitions at Fatima.
5
The main difference between the devotions to the hearts of Jesus and Mary is
that the one concerned with Jesus emphasizes his divine heart as being full of
love for mankind, but with this love for the most part being ignored or rejected,
while devotion to Mary's heart is essentially concerned with the love that her
heart has for Jesus, for God.
The Daily Offering to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart
of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works,
joys, and suffering of this day in union
with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
throughout the world. I offer them for all
the intentions of Your Sacred Heart: the
salvation of souls, reparation for sins,
the reunion of all Christians; I offer
them for the intentions of our Bishops
and of all Apostles of Prayer and in par-
ticular for those recommended by our
Holy Father this month.
The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is also known as the
Solemnity of Corpus Christi, which translates from Latin to “Body of
Christ.” This feast originated in France in the mid-thirteenth century and was
extended to the whole Church by Pope Urban IV in 1264. This feast is celebrat-
ed on the Thursday following the Trinity Sunday or, as in our parish, on the Sun-
day following that feast.
This feast calls us to focus on two manifestations of the Body of Christ, the Holy
Eucharist and the Church. The primary purpose is to devote our attention to the
Eucharist. The opening prayer at Mass calls our attention to Jesus' suffering and
death and our worship of Him, especially in the Eucharist.
The secondary emphasis is upon the Body of Christ as it is present in the
Church. The Church is called the Body of Christ because of the intimate com-
munion which Jesus shares with his disciples. He expresses this in the gospels
by using the metaphor of a body in which He is the head. This image helps keep
in focus both the unity and the diversity of the Church.
Our worship of Jesus in His Body and Blood calls us to offer to God our Father
a pledge of undivided love and an offering of ourselves to the service of others.

Rejoice in the joy of the Eucharist
The Solemnity of Corpus Christi or the Body
and Blood of Christ will be celebrated on Sun-
day 7 June.
The Solemnity of Corpus Christi commemorates
the institution of the Holy Eucharist, paralleling
Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday), when Our
Lord instituted the Eucharist. The official title of
this Solemnity was changed in 1970 to the Body
and Blood of Christ.
The principal founder of the Solemnity of Corpus
Christi was an Augustinian nun, Saint Juliana of
Mont Cornillion, in Belgium. Saint Juliana looked
upon the Holy Eucharist with great reverence, and desired to have a feast within
the Church devoted specifically to its honor. From the earliest days within the
Church, the custom for the celebration of the Eucharist fell specifically on
Maundy Thursday. However, Holy Week was often seen as a time of great sor-
row and repentance, and Juliana felt that the celebration of the Eucharist should
be a time of rejoicing.
Pope Urban IV published the Bull Transiturus (8 September 1264), in which,
after having praised the love of Our Savior as expressed in the Holy Eucharist,
ordered the annual celebration of Corpus Christi on the Thursday after Trinity
Sunday. Today, in countries where it is not a holy day of obligation, it is cele-
brated on the following Sunday.
The Church views the Eucharist as unique, even among the sacraments, since the
earliest times. Thus, it is fitting that a feast exists to specifically commemorate
the Eucharist. The Catholic Catechism summarizes this teaching on the im-
portance of the Eucharist:
The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The other
sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the
apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it.
For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the
Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch.
John 6:48–51: “I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the
desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one
may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; who-
ever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for
the life of the world.”

First Holy Communion and Confirmation
Of all seven sacraments, the Holy
Eucharist is the most central and
important to Catholicism. The day
on which we receive Holy Com-
munion for the first time is a mile-
stone in our spiritual lives. We
joyfully celebrated First Holy
Communion at Vor Frue Kirke on
12 April 2015.
In the photo to the right, Aza
Sindy Che and Kiara Sirri Che
are seen receiving their First Com-
munion at the English Mass.
At the Danish Mass, the following
also received First Holy Commun-
ion: Katharina Emilie Beyer Hansen, Lawrence Mendy, Catharina Khanh Do
Nguyen, Nicolai Khoi Do Nguyen, Marko Pavlovic, Matteo Pavlovic, and
Alina Maria Wroblewski Procopio.
Special thanks to Miriam Garde for carefully preparing the children for this great
event.
On 15 May, six
young parishioners
were confirmed in
their Catholic faith
by our bishop
Czeslaw Kozon.
They included,

Thorkild, Pam-
phile, Joél P., Joel

The Oblates celebrate
Father Terry Figel, OMI, has a long
history in Denmark. He served in
Denmark for eight years almost fifty
years ago. His last posting was as
pastor in Viborg. Father Terry visited
Denmark recently at the invitation of
the former leader of the youth group
that he shepherded during his time
here to celebrate his fiftieth anniver-
sary as a priest.
After leaving Denmark, he spent 27
years as a chaplain in the US Air
Force and currently is pastor of the 500
-family Holy Family parish in Duluth, Minnesota, USA.
He concelebrated several Masses during his visit, and he thanked his fellow Ob-
late priests for generously taking care of him during his visit. He said, “I feel so
graciously accepted here, and so I continue to return. For me, my stay in Den-
mark was the best time of my life.”
In his remarks during Mass at Vor Frue Kirke on 26 April, he said, “Remember,
you are children of God. And God only creates what is good. Say, ‘I’m a son or
daughter of God, and I’ve got something good to give the people.’”
In February, our Oblates
celebrated the anniver-
sary of the Papal ap-
proval of the Missionary
Oblates of Mary Immac-
ulate and their constitu-
tion. Approval was
granted on 17 February
1826 by Pope Leo XII.
Our Danish Oblates
were joined by two Sri
Lankan priests serving
in Norway. From left to

roll, Michael, and Leo.

While visiting Copenhagen, Father Anthony Chukwuebuka
Ohaekwusi assisted at Holy Week services at Sakramentskirken.
The week after Easter, he was the main celebrant at Vor Frue Kirke
and Sakramentskirken. Father Anthony, who was ordained in his
native Nigeria, is studying for a Master’s degree in philosophy at
John Paul II Catholic University, Lublin, Poland. Reflecting on his
visit to Denmark, Father Anthony said, “I learned a lot from my
short experience with the Catholic family in Copenhagen.”

Recently, Pope Francis explained how to remain in Jesus: “To do the same
that he did. To do good, to help others, to pray to the Father, to care for the sick,
to help the poor, the have the joy of the Holy Spirit.
“When we expel others, for example, when we gossip, we don’t remain in Jesus.
Jesus never did this. When we are liars, we don’t remain in Jesus. He never did
it. When we cheat others with these dirty affairs, which are the work of every-
one, we find ourselves dead. We don’t remain in Jesus.”
