FROM FR. RAY… On Tuesday evening of this week after the 5:30 p.m. Mass at St. Augustine (at approximately 6:00 p.m. at the John C. Dwyer Parish Center) we will hold our first in a series of Soup & Sandwich / “Catholism” workshops. Our workshop this week is entitled “Amazed & Afraid: the Revelation of God Become Man.” To help in the preparation of food, a signup list is located at the en-trance of our churches. It is my hope that many of you will participate as we strive to grow more deeply in our love & understanding of God during this Season of Lent.

New York State allows each church to constitute a civil corporation with the Bishop, The Vicar General, the Pas-tor/Administrator and two Lay Trustees. In the State of New York, the role of Trustee centers principally in the establishment of parishes and the dispositions of church property. In addition, in the Diocese of Ogdensburg, Lay Trustees are “exofficio” members between the Pastoral and Finance Councils in a parish. The Pastor/Administrator of a parish from February to February appoints Trustees on a yearly basis. They may serve a maximum of 3 terms (3 years). St. Augustine has had the privilege of Michael DeBeer and Terry Reome serve one year of the three year maximum. Terry Reome has requested to step aside from another term. Thus I have appointed Lisa Avery to replace Terry and have re-newed Mike DeBeer’s term for another year. St. Mary’s has had the privilege of Joshua Barse and Cynthia Richards serve one year of a three year maxi-mum, and I have renewed Josh and Cyndie’s term for an-other year. I wish to thank Mike, Terry, Josh and Cyndie for their sincere and generous dedication and service as trustees. And I welcome Lisa Avery as she begins her service as a Trustee for St. Augustine.

We have been blessed to have 4 individuals involved with our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) process. These four candidates (a candidate is someone who has been previously baptized in another Christian faith or has solely been baptized as a Catholic without celebrating the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirma-tion). At the Easter Vigil, candidates will not be baptized since Baptism marks us with an indelible character. In other words, we may be baptized only once. Instead, can-didates will make a profession of faith, will be confirmed, and will receive the Eucharist for the first time. The Annual Diocesan Rite of Election will take place this Sunday, March 5, from 2:30pm to 4:30pm at St. Mary's Cathedral,415 Hamilton Street,Ogdensburg, NY, at which Bishop LaValley and the Church of Ogdensburg will formally accept this time of final preparations to all candidates and catechumens throughout the Diocese. Our 4 candidates are Heather Eldridge, Nicole McCaf-frey from St. Augustine and Maryanne Daily, Troy Deno from St. Mary. Know that all of you are welcome to join them and me at the Rite of Election. Please keep them in prayer as they continue their journey to be fully united with us in faith at the Easter Vigil.

Don’t forget to mark your calendar for our upcoming Lenten Parish Mission which will take place at all our Masses the weekend of March 18/19 and at 7:00 p.m. Monday through Wednesday March 20 to 22.

MARCH 5: FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT Gn 2:79;3:17/Rom 5:1219 or 5:12, 1719/Mt 4:111

Isn’t it amazing that Adam, living in the abundance of the Garden of Eden, was tempted by the serpent to eat of the one tree of which God told him not to eat? Contrast this with our Gospel today, where Jesus is tempted by the dev-il in the desert, a place of desolation, to provide for him-self food, safety, and power, yet resists the temptation. Jesus, the new Adam, reverses the original sin of the old Adam. We, amid our abundance, are also often tempted. We think, if only I had more than enough, I wouldn’t be tempted. Yet it is in denying ourselves that we receive the grace to fight temptation. It is when we go into the desert that we come out stronger. This is the discipline of Lent. Pray: Keep your eyes on Jesus. Fast: Deny yourself some of the abundant goods. Give alms: Give away what you give up.

DIOCESE OF OGDENSBURG VOCATIONSOCIETY

Did you know our diocese has a group called D.O.V.S (Diocese of Ogdensburg VocationSociety). It is a group of dedicated people who pray for and work to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life in our dio-cese. They meet most months, plan events to thank our priests and religious, and annually take a pilgrimage. Please consider joining! Call Connie at 315265276, or the Vocations Office at3153932920to join, to askquestions, or to attend our next meeting onMarch 15th,in Norfolk.

LENTEN REGULATIONS 2017

ABSTINENCE FROM MEAT All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are bound to abstain totally from meat on the following days: Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday. (Bishop LaValley has granted a dispensation from abstinence from meat to those who observe St. Pat-rick’s Day on Friday, March 17, asking that another pen-itential act take its place.) FASTING All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are bound also to observe the Law of Fast on the following days: Ash Wednesday (March 1) and Good Friday (April 14). Fasting, that is, eating less, involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Lighter nourishment may be taken on two other occa-sions in the course of the day. PRAYER & PENANCE The entire season of Lent should be observed in a spir-it of prayer and penance. Spending extra time in prayer (such as the Rosary or Stations of the Cross) or Bible study, attending daily Mass or Eucharistic Adoration, voluntary sacrifice and selfdenial, combined with works of charity and service to others, are all excellent ways to obey the Lord's command to reform our lives and to pre-pare for the joyful celebration of Easter. EASTER DUTY All Catholics who have reached the age of reason must confess their serious sins in the Sacrament of Penance at least once a year. They must also receive Holy Com-munion at least once each year during the Easter season, which this year extends from March 5, the First Sunday of Lent, until Trinity Sunday, June 11. OBLIGATION All Christ’s faithful are obliged by divine law to do penance. The days set aside for fast and abstinence in Lent are special ways of doing penance and are an ex-pression of unity for all the Church.

TRIP TO ITALY WITH FR. RAY! Fr. Ray will lead a trip to Rome and to southern Italy in September, 2017, with Fr. Joe Porpiglia, from the Di-ocese of Buffalo. A visit to Assisi is also available to participants. Fr. Ray and Fr. Joe invite you to join them for this enriching and pleasurable travel experience. De-parting September 24 from either Montreal’s Trudeau Airport or Toronto’s Pearson Airport, return on October 4 or October 6 (later dates include a visit to Assisi). Rome, the Vatican, Monte Cassino, Naples, Sorrento, the Isle of Capri, Amalfi and the ruins of Pompeii are but a few of the sites and events included in the itiner-ary. Register by March 15 and deduct $100 per person from the announced allinclusive per person price of $3,995 (for returns on October 4) or from the $4,450 per person price if you choose to return on October 6. Consult Fr. Ray for more information.
