In What Do You Trust?

Many today make the same mistake made by Jabin who placed his trust in his league of nations that he believed would be able to save him from his enemies. In the same chapter of Joshua we read of another mistake in placing one’s trust in the wrong thing. In Joshua 11:21-23 we learn that the Anakim were a people who trusted in their own physical strength. The text tells us, “And at that time Joshua came and cut off the Anakim from the mountains: from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities. 22 None of the Anakim were left in the land of the children of Israel; they remained only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod. 23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD had said to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheri-tance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. Then the land rested from war.” The Anakim, or “sons of Anak” were the giants in the land. When the Israelites first came to the land and sent out the twelve spies, they were told that these men were giants and could not be defeated. “And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 "There we saw the gi-ants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight” (Num. 13:32, 33). Their stature was something that produced fear in those they confronted them. Goliath of Gath was probably one of the Anakim. He was a giant between 9’ 9” and 11 feet tall. When he came out to challenge the armies of Israel, the armies of Israel fled. It was the size and the physical strength of Goliath that cause Israel to be afraid and to flee and that caused Goliath to believe that he could defeat anyone that Israel put forward. Goliath’s physical strength could not save himself nor could the strength of all the Anakim save them! Goliath boasted of what he would do to David but his physical advantage was not sufficient for a victory. David needed only one stone in his sling to take Goliath down and then using Goliath’s own sword, David decapi-tated him. Likewise the Anakim as a people were not able to defeat Israel and keep their land. Caleb, as an eighty- five year old man asked for the land where the Anakim were and with the help of God he defeated them and took that land for his own possession. Likewise the strongest among us spiritually speaking cannot save themselves. – “But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousness are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away” (Isa. 64:6). Those that depend upon their goodness are lost for as Paul said, “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23), and our sin has brought spiri-tual death upon us (Rom. 5:12). The only ones that are saved are those who depend upon another – Jesus the Christ. They are the ones who by faith that obeys have righteousness im-puted to them as James says of Abraham who “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. And he was called the friend of God” (James 2:23).

BIBLE CORRESPONDENCE COURCE

SPECIAL NOTE

May God bless you as you read thought this spe-

cial note that I have included. After taking a free

Bible study through the mail from a Church

here at Madison, Wisconsin. I became more

aware that I had not been properly baptized. As

I studied the Bible and answered these Bible

lessons I realized that it was necessary for me to

be properly baptized by immersion under water.

And thank God it was possible, I thought it

couldn’t be possible being where I am, but by

the grace of God I was baptized, immersed un-

der water on August 10th, 2015. Everybody at

Four Lakes Church of Christ are happy and

have rejoiced that I have become a Christian

and added to the Church of Christ. Pam knows,

the one who used to correct my Bible lessons. I

was given a certificate of my baptism. Thank

God I am saved! I will be going to heaven! Glory

to God!

( This is a prisoner in Wisconsin that has been

a student of Pam Rachal. If you would like to be

a part of this great work please contact the

Church office. We will sign you up as a BCC

teacher. It is a easy way to teach the Bible.)
