Report

O ur Year 11 and Year 10 students will commence their mid-semester exams over the next week. Sitting ex-ams can be incredibly beneficial for students and the

advantages include; improved knowledge, practise effective revision strategies, identify areas that need attention and gain valuable experience working under exam conditions. As a result of the upcoming exams, I asked our Year 12 VCE Captains to provide some insight and some advice for our Year 11 and Year 10 students leading up to their exams. Why are sitting exams important? The Year 10 and 11 exams are important as they prepare you for your Year12 exams and SACTs. They also allow your teacher to check how you are doing in the class – Gen Foott The exams assess our knowledge of a subject and contribute towards an ATAR in Year 12, meaning the more effort you put into exams, the more tertiary education opportunities you will get out of school – Holly Gleeson-Brown To demonstrate the knowledge you have gained from your classes and to know information so you can attend university – Ryan Oogjes Exams can set you up for the future – Darcy Thompson How do you study for your exams? Make a list of everything you need to know and start studying as soon as possible. Make sure your work is up to date and ask questions to both your peers and teachers – Gen Foott I usually make a summary of all I need to know and work my way through it, answering revision questions or taking notes - Holly Gleeson-Brown I stick to a set schedule which consists of 2 hours of home-work and 2 hours of study – Ryan Oogjes Relax and don’t stress – Darcy Thompson Exam preparation tips. Make sure the night before you go to bed early and always eat breakfast or lunch before the exam. Stay calm! – Gen Foott Consult your teacher or a friend if you don’t know something. Try and revise earlier topic constantly, don’t leave all revision until the days before the exam - Holly Glesson-Brown Complete past exams or previous assessment tasks and ask your teacher questions – Ryan Oogjes Get plenty of sleep, eat and drink water - Darcy Thompson Do you have any other advice for students about to sit their exams? Don’t stress and try your best. Learn from your exams and try to do better next time – Gen Foott Try and get enough sleep or early nights as you can before the exam. Try not to stress. Try your best to get good marks or marks that show you have worked hard – Ryan Oogjes Just have a grouse time – Darcy Thompson

To all the year 10 and 11 students who are about to sit their exams. Please consider the advice provided by our school captains and I wish you good luck and hope you achieve the results of which you are capable. Acting Assistant Principal Todd Woodfine

Year 11 Update VCE Unit 1 Exams will be running from the 2nd of June (tomorrow) to the 7th of June (Wednesday). The exam timeta-ble was released last week to students. Students at this stage should be revising for their exams and catching up with teach-ers to clarify any material from Unit 1. It is important that students take the exams seriously and give their best effort as these are reflected and emphasized on their school reports. Melbourne Work Experience (23rd - 28th July) is fast ap-proaching. A letter with details about the trip was distributed for students attending including itinerary, payment request and medical form. It is required that payment of $310 be made before the end of this term (Wednesday 28th June) or that an alternative payment arrangement is agreed upon with the school. If you have any queries feel free to contact me at the school. Thank you for your support in these matters. Matthew Callaway Year 11 Coordinator

Around the College Year 10 Mock Interviews

O n Monday and Tuesday this week, over half of our Year 10 students completing Careers this semester went through the process of a ‘Mock Job Interview’

with a person from the Shire of Campaspe, MEGT, or Sarina Russo. The students had gone through the exercise of applying for a job, bringing their resume with them and then going through a formal interview process. Both the interviewers and students found it to be a rewarding and very worthwhile exercise. In particular, the interviewers kept saying what great students we have at Rochester Secondary College. While a lot of students were nervous, it was an important step towards competing with others for part-time jobs, volunteer positions and eventually the open job market. JOHN MONASH SCIENCE SCHOOL

O n Sunday the 7th of May, Bryce Gordon, myself plus twenty-two other students from regional Victoria headed to John Monash Science school in Melbourne. A welcome lunch was provided and we learnt where we would be going to school for the following three weeks.

We were provided with a homestay family, a class buddy and a timetable that included a range of exciting, scientific, mathe-matical and technical subjects. We experienced what it's like at JMSS, a school very different to most. The school is huge and has three floors to hold its classrooms, laboratories and students who are all incredibly friendly and helpful. For my emerging science elective I did “Cells to Systems”. I learnt about the brain and how it communicates with the body, got to dissect an eyeball and was able to contribute on science fair night. With a group of other regional exchange students we pre-sented some information on neuroscience to anyone who would come and listen and got to see other people's presentations. When not at school, we were with our homestay families. I stayed with the Taylor's and three other regional exchange student's (a total of 11 in the house). After the first week we all became really close and felt right at home. On the weekends and some days after school, we got to visit places and do things in Melbourne. We went to Chadstone, St Kilda, Melbourne Central, watched a football game and went rock climbing at Up Unlimited. We were even lucky to be present during some of John Monash’s special events, such as science fair night, the lip sync battle and Harmony Day. The three weeks went by really fast and we were all quite sad to say goodbye to the school and all the friends we had made, but we had an absolute blast and I'm so glad I went. Bryce and I look forward to going back to John Monash in October, to present our Extended Experimental Investigation posters that we are yet to finish. By Lara Mitchell and Bryce Gordon
