Student Council:CommunityInvolvementStaff Writer: Aleena Faisal

Student Council is trying tohelp the community by callingsome orphanage centers andasking them how we can helpthem. Members have also beenlooking into finding out if we

can vounteer. Ifthis is possible,we will haveRIS studentsvisit orphanageson severaloccasions.

We are thinking aboutstudents' safety andabout helping thestudents learn aboutcharacter education.

We want to teachchildren at orphanages as well asRIS students the character educationwords and ideas in an easier way.We are also planning to start afundraiser to collect funds so that wecan make a donation to orphanagesand other places that are in need.

Caring for theCommunity: StudentCouncil President, JoshuaSeo, says that he has bigplans to get out school morelinked with our community!

Have any suggestions forStudent Council? E-mail us [email protected]!

We want your ideas!

Student ProblemsStaff Writer: Humayra Sharipova

As students, it is natural thatmany people have studentproblems. We students cansometimes be under a lot ofstress!

I went out into our school to surveyand check out what our biggeststudent problems are these days.Let's see what some hot issues are atRIS and see if we can fix them! Ifyou have an idea for how to helpthis student problem, please write tostudent council or a letter to theeditor of our newszine!

Problem One: A big concernfrom grade 5 to 8 students is thatour MacBooks have a limitedtime for us to work, andsometimes the students need extratime to work on their homework. They really need this greattechnology! They should be ableto use it!

For grade 2-4 students, our iPadsonly slide and unlock. No limitedtime; we can open our iPadswhenever we want! Is this fair?

Solution One: One idea is thatthe MacBooks should open at

least at 8 a.m. Also, maybehaving a "lockout time" isn'ta good idea since our MS

students have so much homework.Any other ideas? Write us!

Problem Two: The secondbiggest problem at RIS forstudents is that grades 3-8 cannoteat second break snack. As youknow, grades 1 and 2 can eat it.Sometimes they even get muffinsfor their second snack and notfruit!

Solution Two: One way to solvethis is to give grades 3-8 a snackduring second break. It couldeven be optional for students whodon't want it! We could alsochange the snack times so that itisn't right after MS students'lunch. Again, if you have anyother ideas, write us. Please!

Problem Three: Another hotissue in our student body is thatmiddle schoolers have too muchhomework. Here are few ideas onthe subjects of their homeworkevery night: Math, Social Studies,Reader's Workshop, Writer'sWorkshop, ELA, and Science.

Every day! Is this too much?

Solution Three: Teachers giveless homework to our students! How else can we fix this? If youhave an idea, tell us so that wecan spread the news!

**Survey Time**

I surveyed our teachers andstudents about these problems.Let's hear what people said!

Ms. Keeney: If students hadproblems, and if they came to me,I would try to fix them.

Ms. Alison: Well, I'd just remindthem that students and teachersare here for you, right? Even ifit's a problem at school or it's aproblem at home, we can solve it.

Aleena, G. 7: I would ask theteacher for help, or I would take alittle break and do something funlike playing soccer.

Humayra: I would take my mindoff of it and think of cupcakes.

Ask The EchoStaff Writer: Bilgesu Balci

Any time that you're feelingstressed, confused, or troubled, ask The Echo! With our "DearEcho" section, you'll get greatadvice in each edition from ourwonderful staff writers!

One teacher gives a certain grade more work.If you think that is unfair, you should talkto that teacher and learn why he or she isgiving you more work. You can also claimand ask why other grades didn't get it, andyour grade got it. If he/she says it is forstandards and your learning, then you shouldjust accept it. Life is not fair sometimes.

Girls and boys are always fighting in my classroom. They arealways taking sides by boys and girls. That is normal. When they fight, they should discuss why arethey fighting, but not in an screaming-or making fun way. Theyshould discuss their problem calmly, and try to solve the problem. As the part when they take each boys and girls side. That isnormal too because boys can think like other boys, and girls canthink like other girls.

I can't sleep at night! I always sleep after 3 or 4 in mid-night! Doyou have any advices?

I think you must listen to a music that can make you sleep, orread a book before sleeping. You can also watch a movie, andwhen you are tried, you can go to sleep. If you go to sleep thatlate because of the chores/homework assignments/grading, thenyou should have a studying plan, and you must decide what willyou do in a time period that will be enough you to finish all yourchores/homework assignments/grading.

I have a book I really want, but the librariansays no. One day I stole the book, and nowthe librarian is searching for it. What do Ido?Just tell the truth.

I am having trouble remembering to unpackmy homework.I think you might want to have a list ofthings that you need to unpack everyday. Before doing your homework, you can have alist of saying things that you did forhomework, and need to take it tomorrow. Also for your homework, you can have ahomework notebook, so you know what to dowhen you are at home.

Some of my friends are so annoying. They talk a lot!If you are annoyed by your friends, you can ask them why theyare talking a lot in a joking way. But remember, you must nothurt their feelings by saying rude things to them directly. Try toask it in a joking way, but you must make them understand thatyou are serious by the way of saying words, or with your actions.

I cant keep my self focused while using the computer and doingHomework. That is ok. Most of the students in RIS have the same problem.Even I do. Maybe you can start by closing other windows that arenot related to homework, and you can have an adult next to youwhen you study, so if you do something that is not abouthomework, he/she can tell you. Also you can record yourself, andif you do something that is not related to your homework and youdon’t realise it, then you can see it, and try to fix it.
