Land-basedPre-Apprenticeship...

• Do you want to support the industries future workforce?• Do you want to share your knowledge with others?• Do you enjoy encouraging and motivating others?• Do you want to benefit from mentoring to

meet your own workplace requirements?

We are looking for suitable mentors to support our Pre-Apprenticeship programme; developing young people whilst meeting their own workplace re-quirements. It is essential for individual businesses to step up to enable the industry to overcome the shortage of skilled workers. We need mentors throughout South-East Scotland, from the Land-based sector, to offer 6 months’ work placements either on a full-time or part-time basis.

Mentors Required for 2020

“We felt as a business it was important to give a keen young person a chance to gain experience in the agricultural industry and put something back into the rural sector. The Pre-Apprenticeship Scheme has been the ideal structure to allow us to do this. There is a real shortage of young coming through and hopefully by investing in the young now, we will reap rewards in the future.”

If you would like to become a mentor or help support this initiative, please email: [email protected] or call 01896 758091 to discuss or request a mentor information pack.

A reminder for Members that Scotland's seasonal

hedge cutting ban comes into force on March 1, as the bird nesting and rearing season begins.

The closed period lasts until August 31, preventing the cutting and trimming of hedges and trees to meet agriculture's cross-compliance requirement to protect wildlife habitats.

However, a hedge or tree may be trimmed from August 1 if the hedge or tree is in a field which will be sown with oilseed rape, temporary grass or another crop subject to prior written consent of Scottish Ministers, where the hedge or tree is adjacent to the field being sown. The only other exception is for road safety.

REMINDER!

LOLER | PUWER | RISK ASSESSMENTS | HEALTH & SAFETY SERVICES

The majority of farm businesses will have heard of the regulations relating to PUWER (Provision and use or work equipment regulations 1998) and LOLER (Lifting operations and lifting equipment regulations 1998).

There is concern across the industry for the number of farms who are still of the belief that these regulations may not apply to their farming business.

Here are the facts:1. Since 1998 it has been a requirement by the Health &

Safety Executive that all lifting equipment and lifting operations are annually inspected. This includes farm machinery such as Telehandlers, Fork Lift Trucks and Tractor Fore-End Loaders.

2. Irrespective of whether the farm has no employees the regulation still stands.

3. Within an agricultural insurance policy, it requires the policyholder/farmer to ensure that all statutory regulations are being met under their policy conditions. This includes the LOLER and PUWER regulations.

4. On a standard farm visit by the HSE, the HSE can now charge you for the visit where a Health & Safety breach has occurred. There’re many examples of the HSE targeting Telehandlers, Fork Lift Trucks and Tractor Fore-End Loaders for their certification.

At UK Risk Management & Engineering Services our technicians are experienced specialists in completing a practical inspection and certification of agricultural & general contracting machinery requiring an inspection under PUWER or LOLER regulations.

To book your inspection contact the BMR Office, or for any technical queries on PUWER/LOLER contact Matt McWhirter (Development Manager) 07939 247526 or Keith Short (Senior Engineer) at UKRMES.

■ BMR has a number of members now on the biomass suppliers’ list for Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) compliance

■ A 16 year old can only drive an agricultural tractor on a provisional licence going to, taking and returning from their test if they fail. Until they are 17yrs old they are restricted to a tractor with a maximum width (including trailers or attachments) of 2.45m wide and can only pull a single axle or close coupled tandem axle trailer. Close coupled means the distance between the centres of the axles does not exceed 840mm.

The law requires that employers make sure their risk assessment for young

people under the age of 18 takes full account of their inexperience, immaturity and lack of awareness of relevant risks. But knowledge of the law regarding vehicle licences is also vital. Here is a reminder of the scope of driving licence law.

The law regarding Driving Licences■ A category F (tractor) licence is automatically issued as part of a car licence. A separate trailer licence is not required for a tractor and trailer.■ To drive an agricultural vehicle which is not a tractor (combine, telehandler, self propelled sprayer etc) you need a car licence but are subject to age related weight bands. 17 up to 3.5 tonnes, 18 up to 7.5 tonnes and to exceed 7.5 tonnes you must be 21 or over. For these classes of vehicles driver who passed their test after 1st January 1997 should sit a trailer test if they wish to tow with one of these vehicles.■ To drive a vehicle steered by its tracks (Challenger but not Quadtrac as this is steered by articulation or a tracked combine) you will require to sit a test and obtain a category H licence.

Neolac from Norvite – A Superior Soya AlternativeFeeding soya alongside high quality silage

has now become an established and successful method of feeding ewes in the run up to lambing, enabling producers to optimise ewe performance but with significantly lower feed costs compared to more traditional silage and compound feeding strategies.

The problem is that soya is now coming under increasing pressure with concerns about its sustainability and the environmental impact of how and where it is grown and transported. In contrast, there is a plentiful supply of high-quality rapeseed that is both sustainably grown and processed here in the UK. Home-grown rapeseed not only offers us the potential to reduce our carbon footprint and reliance on imported protein but, a little known fact is that, rapeseed protein also has a superior amino acid profile compared to soya and is actually a much closer match to the requirements of the ewe and growing foetus.

The challenge is that ewes in late pregnancy need a good supply of by-pass protein (DUP), which standard rapeseed meal doesn’t provide. Many traditional methods of

increasing the by-pass protein content of feed by using aggressive and dangerous chemicals such as formaldehyde have been recently banned, which has opened the door to the next

generation of effective natural bypass treatments, such as that used to produce Neolac. Exclusively manufactured in Scotland, Neolac is produced by gently treating freshly cold-pressed rapeseed with natural organic acids and wood sugars to increase the level of bypass protein to 60%, which compares to a DUP content in Hipro Soya of only 28%. The result is that 100g of Neolac provides 34% more bypass protein than 100g of Soya and at the same time with a superior amino acid profile and energy content. Essential amino acids and energy, just when it’s needed.

Neolac should be fed as part of a TMR alongside quality silage for the last 4-6 weeks of pregnancy, at a rate of 100g/foetus/day.

Neolac can also be supplied fully mineralised with a high quality Easi-Lamber mineral incorporating high levels of vitamins, organic trace elements, seaweed, SAF-Mannans, Glycerol and fish oils to maximise ewe performance and lamb vitality during and after lambing.
