THE ENTRANCE OF THE PROCESSION

The congregation remains seated as the procession of Choir and Clergy makes it way up the Nave, from the West Door, at 5:45 p.m. during an organ voluntary.

The congregation stands at the arrival of the Governor General at 5:55 p.m.

THE WELCOME The Dean offers a general welcome and announces the Opening Hymn.

The Dean: My brothers and sisters, I greet you in the name of Jesus Christ! Grace and peace be with you. People: And also with you. The Dean: Welcome to this Cathedral Church of St Michael and All Angels as we have gathered here to welcome the 14th Bishop of our Diocese of Barbados into his Cathedral, and to enthrone him in the chair appointed for his office. Let us now stand and lift our voices in the singing of the hymn 730.

5

HYMN 730

God is here! As we his people meet to offer praise and prayer, may we find in fuller measure what it is in Christ we share: Here, as in the world around us, all our varied skills and arts wait the coming of His Spirit into open minds and hearts. Here are symbols to remind us of our lifelong need of grace; here are table, font and pulpit, here the cross has central place. Here in honesty of preaching, here in silence, as in speech, here in newness and renewal God the Spirit comes to each. Here our children find a welcome in the Shepherd's flock and fold; here as bread and wine are taken, Christ sustains us as of old. Here the servants of the Servant seek in worship to explore what it means in daily living to believe and to adore.

Lord of all, of Church and Kingdom, in an age of change and doubt, keep us faithful to the gospel, help us work your purpose out.

6

Here, in this day's dedication, all we have to give, receive; we who cannot live without you, we adore you! We believe.

The following procession is formed and makes its way down the centre aisle of the Cathedral during the second verse of the Opening Hymn 730:

THE ENTRY OF THE LORD BISHOP The Registrar, Chancellor, Dean and Chapter will position themselves within the Cathedral at the West Door which shall be locked by the Dean. The Bishop, standing outside the door with his Chaplain, shall knock three times and say:

The Bishop: Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter and give thanks to the Lord. (Psalm 118:19) The Dean, unlocking the door, shall open it before the Bishop. As the Dean unlocks the door a fanfare of trumpets shall be sounded.

FANFARE

7

The Bishop, advancing into the doorway, shall in a loud voice, that he may be heard of all within, say:

The Bishop: I, Michael Bruce St. John Maxwell, by Divine permission Bishop of Barbados, having been duly appointed and confirmed, make my request of you, Very Reverend Brother, that I be conducted to the Bishop's Seat in the Cathedral Church of Barbados, there to be Inducted, Installed and Enthroned according to ancient usage and prescriptive right. The Dean shall reply inviting the Bishop to enter, saying:

The Dean: Michael, our Right Reverend Father in God, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we, the Chapter of your Cathedral Church, together with the people of this Diocese, bid you welcome to your Cathedral Church of St Michael and All Angels. People: In the name of the Lord we greet you. The Bishop: My brothers of the Cathedral Chapter and dear people of our Diocese, with all my heart, I thank you for your welcome. I hope to serve you, and to serve with you in Christ’s name and in the joy of His Spirit. I pray that the ministry which we will share may be pleasing to God; that it may strengthen the life of this diocese and impact spiritually the Island of Barbados. May the peace of the God our Father be upon this house and upon this company. The Bishop’s procession makes it way up the Nave, from the West Door, during the singing of Psalm 84.

PSALM 84 (Chant by C. H. H. Parry)

1. O HOW amiable are thy dwellings : thou Lord of hosts! 2. My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the

courts of the Lord : my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.

3. Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young : even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.

4. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house : they will be alway praising thee.

5. Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee : in whose heart are thy ways.

6. Who going through the vale of misery use it for a well: and the pools are filled with water.

7. They will go from strength to strength: and unto the God of gods appeareth every one of them in Sion.

8. O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer : hearken, O God of Jacob.

9. Behold, O God our defender: and look upon the face of thine Anointed.

10. For one day in thy courts: is better than a thousand. 11. I had rather be a door-keeper in the house of my God:

than to dwell in the tents of ungodliness. 12. For the Lord God is a light and defence: the Lord will

give grace and worship, and no good thing shall he withhold from them that live a godly life.

13. O Lord God of hosts : blessed is the man that putteth his trust in thee. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be : world without end Amen.

9

The Bishop shall be conducted to a faldstool and shall there kneel in private devotion, the people all kneeling with him.

During the time of the Bishop’s private prayer, the following shall be sung by the choir, the people still kneeling

“God be in my head” God be in my head, and in my understanding; God be in my eyes, and in my looking; God be in my mouth, and in my speaking; God be in my heart, and in my thinking; God be at mine end, and at my departing.

Words anonymous, from Book of Hours, Sarum, 1514 Music by J. Rutter

THE PRAYERS The singing ended, the Archdeacon and Senior Canon stand on either side of the Bishop as he kneels while the Dean, turning towards the people, shall lead the following versicles with congregation responses (R):

The Dean begins:

V. Lord, have mercy upon us. R. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. V. O Lord, save your servant; R. Who puts his trust in You, V. Send him help from your holy place, R. And evermore mightily defend him V. Be unto him, O Lord, a strong tower: R. From the face of his enemies.

10

V. O Lord, hear our prayer; R. And let our cry come unto You. The Dean continues:

Let us pray O GOD, from whom all honour, worth and glory of the sacred ministry proceed; Regard, we pray You, your servant Michael Bruce St. John, whom You have called to be a Bishop after the order of the Apostles, a leader of priests, and a teacher of Your Church; Grant to him, whom You have chosen to the highest order of the ministry, grace that he may now enter upon the Bishop's Seat of this Diocese to lead your Church and people. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. People: Amen. O God of unchangeable power and eternal light, look favourably upon our whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery, by the effectual working of Your providence carrying out in tranquility the plan of salvation: Let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and all things are being brought to their perfection by Him through Whom all things were made, Your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; Who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. The Bishop shall thereupon make his petition to be installed, and shall present to the Dean the Letters Mandatory from the Senior Bishop of the West Indies, saying:

11

THE READING OF THE MANDATE

The Bishop: I, Michael Bruce St. John Maxwell, by Divine permission Lord Bishop of Barbados, duly and canonically appointed, petition you to Induct, Install and Enthrone me, with full Episcopal Rights in the Cathedral Church of St. Michael and All Angels in Barbados; and, that my petition may be the more effectual, I come with Letters Mandatory from The Senior Bishop of the Church in the Province of the West Indies, which I here present to you, praying that they and my petition may be favourably received. The Dean shall receive the Letters Mandatory at the Bishop’s hand and direct the Chancellor to read them thus:

The Dean: Right Reverend Father in God, with joy and gladness we hear your petition and receive the Letters Mandatory, which we now direct the Chancellor to exhibit and read. Whereupon the Chancellor shall read the Letters Mandatory of the Senior Bishop of the Church of the Province of the West Indies.

At the conclusion of the reading of the Mandate, the Dean addresses the congregation.

The Dean: The Mandate having been read and the legal authority for the Enthronement of the Bishop having been established, let the will of the people now be made known. Do you, the people of the Diocese of Barbados, recognise and receive Michael Bruce

St. John Maxwell as your Diocesan Bishop? People: We do.

12

The Dean: Will you therefore uphold Bishop Maxwell in this ministry? People: We will.

THE EXAMINATION

The congregation sits while the Canons and the Archdeacon join the Dean and stand in front of the Bishop. The Dean addresses the Bishop by saying:

The Dean: My brother, it has pleased God to call you to be a Shepherd and Chief Pastor of this Diocese. I am sure that long before now you have laid to heart the high trust and weighty obligations of this office. But, in order that this congregation and the people of the Diocese may know your commitment to fulfill this trust, we call upon you to reaffirm the promises you made when you were ordained and consecrated a Bishop in the Church of God. The following questions are then addressed to the Bishop by the Canons and the Archdeacon.

The Reverend Canon Coleridge A. Darlington: Bishop Michael, at your Ordination as Bishop, you promised to be diligent in prayer, in the reading of Holy Scripture and in study. Will you then be amongst us as one who leads us all into a deeper holiness, strengthening us to live out the love of God as revealed in Scripture? Bishop: With the help of God, I will.

13

The Reverend Canon George A. Harewood: At your Ordination as Bishop, you promised to lead your people in proclaiming the glorious Gospel of Christ. Will you then be faithful and courageous in equipping the whole people of God to announce the coming of God’s kingdom and declaring its meaning to the world? Bishop: With the help of God, I will. The Reverend Canon Curtis S. R. Goodridge: At your Ordination as Bishop, you promised to promote peace, justice and love among all people. Will you reach across all that divides and separates us as human beings and work towards our unification as one family under God? Bishop: With the help of God, I will. The Reverend Canon Austin D. Carrington: At your Ordination as Bishop, you were called to be a steadfast guardian of the faith and sacraments, a wise teacher and faithful leader of worship in the Church of God. Will you then, with all your strength, promote God’s mission for His Church, faithfully oversee its doctrine, renew and develop the ministry of the clergy and laity and inspire the worship of God in spirit and in truth? Bishop: With the help of God, I will. The Reverend Canon Wayne E. Isaacs: At your Ordination as Bishop, you promised to be gentle and merciful to all persons especially the needy and the outcasts and be the voice for the voiceless. Will you then boldly and impartially undertake and encourage social transformation within the Church of God and society in order that God’s salvation may be known and His deliverance revealed? Bishop: With the help of God, I will.

14

The Reverend Canon Dr. Geoffrey D. Mayers: At your Ordination as Bishop, you promised to be steadfast in caring for and raising up your own family or household according to the way of Christ. Will you strive to be a wholesome example to all people in the management of your home and family life? Bishop: With the help of God, I will. Archdeacon Eric E. Lynch: At your Ordination as Bishop you promised to strive for the unity of Christ’s Church. Will you then, diligently and with gracious patience, work with your fellow clergy and laity towards the fulfilment of Christ’s prayer that we may all be one? Bishop: With the help of God, I will. Having had the Mandate read, the consent of the people given, and the Examination ended, the Dean shall then say to the Bishop: The Dean: I, Jeffrey Douglas Gibson, Dean of this Cathedral Church by and with the consent of the Chapter and the will of the people here present, do receive, with all due regard and respect, the Letters Mandatory of the Senior Bishop of the Church in the Province of the West Indies which have now been exhibited and read by the Chancellor: and we do desire to Induct, Install and Enthrone you, Michael Bruce St. John Maxwell, first calling upon you as Bishop to take the customary oaths in this behalf.

15

THE OATH The Lord Bishop shall then take the oath accordingly, with the Archdeacon holding the Gospel Book so that he may lay his right hand upon it, the congregation standing.

The Bishop: In the Name of God. Amen I, Michael Bruce St. John Maxwell, by Divine Permission Lord Bishop of Barbados appointed and now to be Inducted, Installed and Enthroned into the Episcopal See of This Cathedral Church of St. Michael and All Angels in Barbados, do swear that I will observe, and to the utmost of my power defend the rights of the said Church and of this Diocese, and that I will lead therein with truth, justice and charity, not lording it over God's heritage, but in all things endeavouring to show myself a servant and an example to the flock.

THE BISHOP’S ENTHRONEMENT The Dean will then lead the Bishop to his throne, and place him therein, and standing before him shall say:

The Dean: In the Name of God. Amen. By the authority of Him and of this sacred Cathedral Church of St. Michael and All Angels in Barbados, I Jeffrey Douglas, Dean of the said Cathedral Church, rightfully and lawfully proceeding, do Induct, Install, and Enthrone you, Right Reverend Father in God, Michael Bruce St. John, by Divine Permission Lord Bishop of Barbados, into the Bishopric and Episcopal dignity of the Bishop of this Diocese, with its rights and dignities and all its opportunities for service; and I assign

16

to you this Throne of our Bishops, and Chair of this Cathedral Church, and the Pastoral Staff of the Bishop. And I leave you so Inducted, Installed and Enthroned in this Holy Seat. In which may our Lord Jesus Christ preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth and for evermore. Amen. The Bishop thus seated in this throne, while the people are kneeling, the Dean shall pray the following:

The Dean Let us pray. O Lord Jesus Christ, who did choose Your apostles to aid and instruct us by their teaching. We pray You so to teach, bless, and guide, Your servant, Michael Bruce St. John, our Bishop in his apostolic charge, that he may live without blame or hurt before You, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

May the Spirit of God rest upon you, filling you at all times with wisdom and understanding and the fear of the Lord. May the Lord stir up in you the flame of holy charity and the power of faith that overcomes the world. May the peace of Christ always stand guard over your heart and mind; and the blessing of God Almighty, Father, + Son and Holy Spirit remain with you now and always. Amen. Then shall the Dean declare the Enthronement duly and fully accomplished, saying:

The Dean: Good people, we here declare to you that the Enthronement of Michael Bruce St. John, by Divine Permission Bishop of Barbados, is now duly and fully accomplished.

17

A fanfare of trumpets shall be sounded.

FANFARE II

The Dean shall then say:

For gladness whereof let us sing the hymn TE DEUM LAUDAMUS - WE PRAISE THEE O GOD. During the singing of the Te Deum, the Bishop will remain seated, the Archdeacon and Senior Canon standing at his side.

TE DEUM LAUDAMUS (Chant by H.S. Oakeley)

WE PRAISE THEE, O God; we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord. A1l the earth doth worship Thee: the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud: the Heavens and all the Powers therein. To Thee Cherubim, and Seraphim: continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy: Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full: of the Majesty of thy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles: praise Thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets: praise Thee. The noble army of Martyrs: praise Thee. The holy Church throughout all the world: doth acknowledge Thee; The Father: of an infinite Majesty; Thine honourable, true; and only Son. Also the Holy Ghost: The Comforter. Thou art the King of Glory: O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son: of the Father. When Thou tookest upon Thee to deliver man: Thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb. When Thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death: Thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers.

18

Thou sittest at the right hand of God: in the glory of the Father. We believe that Thou shalt come: to be our Judge. We therefore pray Thee, help Thy servants: Whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with the Saints: in glory everlasting. O Lord, save Thy people: and bless Thy heritage. Govern them: and lift them up for ever. Day by day: we magnify Thee; And we worship Thy Name: ever world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord: to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy upon us: have mercy upon us. O Lord, let Thy mercy lighten upon us: as our trust is in Thee. O Lord, in Thee have I trusted: let me never be confounded.

THE PRESENTATION OF THE BISHOP

Then the Dean, taking the Bishop by the right hand, leads him to the Chancel steps, presenting him to the people as their Bishop, saying:

The Dean: My Brother and Sisters of the Clergy and Laity, members of the Anglican Communion and other members of this congregation; I present to you, and through you to the people of the Diocese of Barbados, Michael Bruce St. John Maxwell as your true and undoubted Bishop. He has been selected and called with no uncertain voice to the high and responsible position into which he has now been placed. I bid you see to it that he has your united support in prayer and loyal obedience for the strengthening and increasing of Christ’s work in the Diocese.

19

Thereafter the people shall be presented to the Bishop as his flock, while the Dean says,

The Dean: Right Reverend Father in God, I now present to you your flock, this congregation and all members of the Anglican Church in the Diocese of Barbados. Under God's guidance, by the will of your people, you have accepted this great charge. Be to them a true Father in God: and may God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost, bless you and these your people now and for ever. Amen The people offer their acclamation (applause).

HYMN 399

Renew thy church, its ministries restore, both to serve and adore. make her again as salt throughout the land and as light from a stand. 'Mid somber shadows of the night where greed and hatred spread their blight, O send us forth with power endued: Help us, Lord, be renewed. Teach us thy word, reveal its truth divine; on our path let it shine. Tell of thy works, thy mighty acts of grace; from each page show thy face. As thou hast loved us, sent thy Son, and our salvation now is won, O let our hearts with love be stirred. Help us, Lord, know thy word!

20

Teach us to pray, for thou art ever near. thy still voice let us hear. Our souls are restless till they rest in thee, this our glad destiny. Before your presence keep us still that we may find for us thy will and seek thy guidance every day:. Teach us, Lord, how to pray! Teach us to love, with strength of heart and mind, everyone, all mankind. Break down old walls of prejudice and hate; Leave us not to our fate. As thou has loved and given thy life to end hostility and strife, O share thy grace from heaven above: Teach us, Lord, how to love!

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING

Mrs Joan Green – Priest’s Warden, The Church of St Jude

READER: A reading from the Word of God, written in the

Book of Isaiah, the forty-ninth chapter, beginning at the first verse.

Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The Lord called me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he named me. He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be

21

glorified.” But I said, “I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the Lord, and my reward with my God.” And now the Lord says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the sight of the Lord, and my God has become my strength— he says, “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave of rulers, “Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

PSALM 15 (Chant by J. Goss)

1. Lord, who shall dwell in thy tabernacle : or who shall

rest upon thy holy hill? 2. Even he that leadeth an uncorrupt life : and doeth the

thing which is right, and speaketh the truth from his heart.

3. He that hath used no deceit in his tongue, nor done evil to his neighbour : and hath not slandered his neighbour.

4. He that setteth not by himself, but is lowly in his own eyes : and maketh much of them that fear the Lord.

5. He that sweareth unto his neighbour, and disappointeth him not : though it were to his own hindrance.

22

6. He that hath not given his money upon usury : nor taken reward against the innocent.

7. Whoso doeth these things : shall never fall. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.

NEW TESTAMENT READING

Mr. Frank Harris – Priest’s Warden, Church of The Holy Trinity

READER: A reading from the Word of God, written in

Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, the fourth chapter, beginning at the first verse.

I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. … The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom

23

the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.

ANTHEM “Let The People Praise Thee, O God” Words from Psalm 67 Music by W. Mathias The Cathedral Choir

During the following hymn, the Dean shall conduct the Bishop to the pulpit, where the Bishop shall deliver a Sermon, saying first of all the Bidding Prayer. All the people shall be standing and joining in the Lord’s Prayer.

HYMN 262

Son of God, eternal Saviour, source of life and truth and grace, Son of Man, whose birth incarnate hallows all our human race, thou, our Head, who, throned in glory, for thine own dost ever plead, fill us with thy love and pity; heal our wrongs, and help our need. As thou, Lord, hast lived for others, so may we for others live; freely have thy gifts been granted, freely may thy servants give: thine the gold and thine the silver, thine the wealth of land and sea, we but stewards of thy bounty, held in solemn trust for thee.

24

Come, O Christ, and reign among us, King of love, and Prince of peace, hush the storm of strife and passion, bid its cruel discords cease; by thy patient years of toiling, by thy silent hours of pain, quench our fevered thirst of pleasure, shame our selfish greed of gain. Son of God, Eternal Saviour, source of life and truth and grace, Son of Man, whose birth incarnate hallows all our human race, thou who prayedst, thou who willest, that thy people should be one, grant, O grant our hope’s fruition: here on earth thy will be done.

THE BISHOP’S ENTHRONEMENT SERMON

The Bishop shall prelude his Sermon with the Bidding Prayer.

THE BIDDING PRAYER

YOU SHALL PRAY for Christ's Holy Catholic Church, that is, for the whole congregation of Christian people dispersed throughout the whole world, and especially for the Church in the Province of the West Indies.

You shall pray for Her Majesty the Queen, the head of the Commonwealth of nations.

You shall pray for the Ministers of God's Holy Word and Sacraments, as well as Archbishops, amongst whom especially as in duty bound, for all Bishops, and other Pastors and Curates.

25

Especially you shall pray for Her Excellency the Governor-General, the Prime Minister, the Parliament, the Privy Council, the Judiciary and for all those who have been called to any office of trust in this nation; That all and every one of these, in their several callings, may serve truly and faithfully to the glory of God and the edifying and well-governing of His people, remembering the account that they must give.

Finally, let us praise God for those who have departed this life in the faith of Christ, and pray God that we may have grace to direct our lives after their good example; that this life ended, we may be made partakers with them of the glorious resurrection in the life everlasting.

All these petitions we make bold to present at the throne of grace in the words which Christ our Saviour Himself has taught us , saying: OUR FATHER in heaven, Hallowed be your Name, Your kingdom come, Your Will be done, on earth as in Heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins; As we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

THE SERMON The Right Reverend Michael B. St. J. Maxwell Fourteenth Bishop of Barbados At the conclusion of the Sermon, the congregation stands and sings the hymn:

HYMN 701

O Lord, thy blessing shower on this assembly here; O send thy Spirit’s power and fill with holy fear

this sacred place: our hearts inspire with holy fire and heavenly grace. Our Bishops fill with zeal and power to speak thy word; thy presence may they feel, thy spirit stir them, Lord, our hearts to move by precepts clear, by love sincere, from thee above. Let priests and laity sing to Thee their hymns of praise; their offering to Thee bring, the offering of their days: let hearts conspire in holy fear, in friendship dear, and warm desire. Let fruits of spirit move and dwell in us, we pray: they peace and joy and love attend us day by day; and meekness, too, long suffering, joy without alloy, faith, goodness true.

AN ACT OF RECOMMITMENT After the hymn the Bishop and congregation sit and he addresses the Congregation.

The Bishop: My Brothers and Sisters, the ministry we share is none other than the sacrificial ministry of Christ, who gave himself up to death on the cross for the salvation of the world. By his glorious resurrection he has opened for us the way of everlasting life. By the gift of the Holy Spirit he shares with us the riches of his grace. We are called to proclaim his death and resurrection, to share the Sacraments of the New Covenant which he sealed with his

blood on the cross, and to care for his people in the power of the Spirit. I invite you here in the presence of Christ and his Church, to renew your commitment to your various ministries; and we begin with the clergy. The Clergy stand and say together,

THE CLERGY: We rededicate and recommit ourselves to our vows and to the mission of Christ, within which all baptised persons are called to share, in witness to Jesus Christ. We pledge to be messengers, stewards, and watchmen of the Lord and to participate in the teaching of the word. We rededicate ourselves to the pastoral ministry whereby we search for all persons who are estranged and who need the ministry of reconciliation. We will always seek to bring to our ministry the feeling of joy, hope and excitement as we serve families, the church, and the congregations in our Nation. We know that we cannot do these things by ourselves; we will therefore endeavour to deepen our spirituality, so that Christ will live in us permanently. The Lay People (Laity) stand and say together,

THE LAITY: We rededicate and recommit ourselves to our baptismal vows and we pledge that we will not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ, our crucified Lord. We will continue to fight against all evil forces and be faithful and devoted stewards to the end of our lives. We pledge to deepen our spirituality as we endeavour to continue in the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in the prayers.

28

We recommit ourselves to be agents of transformation in the society as we seek to serve our families and Christ by loving our neighbours as ourselves. The Bishop stands and makes the following affirmation.

THE BISHOP: And now, as your Bishop, I too, before God and you, rededicate myself and reaffirm the promises that I made at my Ordination. Pray for me that despite my own unworthiness I may faithfully fulfil the office of Chief Pastor which Jesus Christ has entrusted to me. Pray that I may become more like our High Priest and Good Shepherd, the Teacher and Servant of all, and so be a genuine sign of Christ’s loving presence among us. PEOPLE: Lord Jesus Christ, hear us and answer our prayer. All kneeling

The Bishop: Together let us pray PEOPLE: Gracious God, your Son, before he ascended to glory, declared that your people would receive power from the Holy Spirit to bear witness to Him to the ends of the earth: Keep that promise ever new as refreshing to our spirits and a source of encouragement and vitality to your Church. Be present with us all as we go forth in your Name to fulfil the mission and ministry of your Church in this Diocese. Let your love shine and be ever radiated through our witness, so that the blind may see, the deaf hear, the lame walk, the dead be raised up, the poor have the good news preached to them, the sinner be forgiven and the captive set free; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Congregation will be seated as the Dean goes to the Lectern to bring greetings.

HYMNS FOR THE OFFERING (239, 348, 355)

HYMN 239 The right hand of God is writing in our land, writing with power and with love our conflicts and our fears, our triumphs and our tears are recorded by the right hand of God. The right hand of God is pointing in our land, pointing the way we must go. So clouded is the way, so easily we stray, but we’re guided by the right hand of God. The right hand of God is striking in our land, striking out at envy, hate and greed. our selfishness and lust, our pride and deeds unjust are destroyed by the right hand of God. The right hand of God is healing in our land, healing broken bodies, minds and souls. So wondrous is its touch, with love that means so much, when we’re healed by the right hand of God.

30

The right hand of God, is planting in our land, planting seeds of freedom, hope and love. In these Caribbean lands, let His people all join hands, and be one with the right hand of God.

HYMN 348

The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the Word. from heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.

Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth; her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. Though with a scornful wonder we see her sore oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up, "How long?" And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore; till, with the vision glorious, her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee.

HYMN 355

We've a story to tell to the nations that shall turn their hearts to the right a story of truth, and sweetness, a story of peace and light a story of peace and light

Refrain: For the darkness shall turn to dawning, and the dawning to noonday bright, and Christ's great kingdom shall come on earth, the kingdom of love and light.

We've a song to be sung to the nations, that shall lift their hearts to the Lord; a song that shall conquer evil, and shatter the spear and sword, and shatter the spear and sword:

Refrain: We've a message to give to the nations that the Lord who reigneth above

hath sent us his Son to save us

and show us that God, love

and show us that God, love Refrain:

We've a Saviour to show to the nations who the path of sorrow hath trod

that all the world's great peoples

might come to the truth of God

might come to the truth of God Refrain:

HYMN 313

God of grace and God of glory, on thy people pour thy power; now fulfil thy church's story; bring her bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour, for the facing of this hour. Lo, the hosts of evil round us scorn thy Christ, assail his ways; from the fears that long have bound us free our hearts to faith and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days, for the living of these days.

34

Cure thy children's warring madness, bend our pride to thy control; shame our wanton selfish gladness, rich in goods and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we miss thy kingdom's goal, lest we miss thy kingdom's goal. Set our feet on lofty places, gird our lives that they may be armoured with all Christ like graces in the fight to set men free. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, that we fail not man nor thee, that we fail not man nor thee.

HYMN 325

Go forth and tell! O church of God, awake! God's saving news to all the nations take; proclaim Christ Jesus, Saviour, Lord, and King, that all the world his worthy praise may sing. Go forth and tell! God's love embraces all; he will in grace respond to all who call: how shall they call if they have never heard the gracious invitation of his word? Go forth and tell where still the darkness lies; in wealth or want, the sinner surely dies: give us, O Lord, concern of heart and mind, a love like yours which cares for all mankind.

35

Go forth and tell! The doors are open wide: share God's good gifts — let no one be denied; live out your life as Christ your Lord shall choose, your ransomed powers for his sole glory use.

Go forth and tell! O church of God, arise! Go in the strength which Christ your Lord supplies, Go till all nations his great name adore And serve him, Lord and King for evermore.

The congregation remains standing in place and quiet as the Bishop greets and blesses the Governor General, before Her Excellency takes leave during an organ voluntary.
