THE REVERSAL OF A PRECIPITATION REACTION

Aim: To reverse the precipitate of copper sulphate and sodium hydroxide

Hypothesis: Hydrochloric acid, Nitric acid and Sulfuric acid can reverse the precipitation

reaction.

Independent Variable: The type of acid used to reverse the precipitation reaction

Dependent Variable: The amount of drops needed to neutralize the reaction

Controlled Variable: the amount of copper sulphate and sodium hydroxide, size of test tube

Method:

1.  Have 3 test tubes and label them 1, 2, 3

2.  Add 10 drops of copper sulphate in each

3.  Add 10 drops of sodium hydroxide in each

4.  In test tube 1, add drops of hydrochloric acid until the precipitate disappears

5.  In test tube 2, add drops of nitric acid until the precipitate disappears

6.  In test tube 3, add drops of sulfuric acid until the precipitate disappears

7.  Record the number of drops needed to neutralize the reaction

8.  Repeat the experiment 2 more times

9.  Compare results
