The Residence of the United States Ambassador to Ukraine

We hope you will enjoy a look at our official residence at Pokrovska 5, where we have been privileged to live since we arrived in Kyiv in December 2009. The house is an historic structure which has been home to six US Ambassadors to Ukraine. We have tried to turn it into a home for ourselves, by exhibiting our own art as well as a fine collection of art from the Art in Embassies Pro-gram at the Department of State. We are also proud to highlight some of the important guests who have visited the residence, including President Barack Obama.

The house at Pokrovska 5 became the Ambassador’s residence in 1996. Leading architect Andrei Melenskiy designed the house in 1808. It is a classic style stucco brick building laid out as a rectangle. There are six rooms on three main floors, an attic floor, and an eight-room cellar. The central facade is decorated in classical style.

For nearly a thousand years, Pokrovska was the main thoroughfare from the port to the upper town. It still contains glimpses of early 19th century Kyiv. One of a handful of houses to survive from the 19th century, Pokrovska 5 is greatly treasured by Ukrainians. It stands next to Pokrovska Church, built in 1766. On the hill above rise the spires of the baroque church of St. Andrew, built in 1747-1753.

The smoke-damaged window frames of two second-story windows are evidence of the fire that struck the house in 1811. Luckily, the structure survived, and after repairs the house was rented to the Kyiv Medical Department. Mortars, pestels, tiny bottles, and jars survive from this time and are found in the permanent collection exhibited in the Gallery.

In 1886, the house was donated to the city of Kyiv as a home for the aged. After the 1917 Revolution, the Bolsheviks closed the institution. In 1928, Pokrovska 5 was made into a communal apartment house, where the records show up to 25 families lived. In 1982, restoration began to return the house to the 1808 layout and appearance. The remains of five earlier buildings dating to the 11th century were found. Masonry, pottery, ceramics, stonework, metalwork, and glass discovered during the restoration are displayed in the Gallery and in the collection of the Kyiv Ancient Archeological Museum.

More than 75 craftsmen carried out the restoration of Pokrovska 5. Whenever possible, they utilized materials commonly used in 1808. The five chandeliers in the reception rooms and study were made in Lviv between 1775 and 1810. The other brass chandeliers and sconces were made in 1995 by craftsmen from the Pecherska Lavra Monastery. Most of the hardware items are reproductions of the ones used in Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello, which was built during the same period.

The decision of the President, Cabinet of Ministers, Mayor of Kyiv, and Institute of Ancient Kyiv to give Pokrovska 5 to the United States as the residence of American ambassadors was a mark of the firm friendship that has emerged between the two countries since Ukraine declared its independence as a sovereign democratic state in 1991.

Будинок по вул. Покровській, 5 став резиденцією американського посла в Україні у 1996 р. Проект цього будинку у 1808 р. створив головний архітектор міста Андрій Меленський. Покровська, 5 – це відштукатурена цегляна будівля класичного стилю у формі чотирикутника. Вона складається з шести кімнат на трьох головних поверхах, мансарди і восьми кімнат у підвалі. Центральний фасад оздоблений класичним декором.

Протягом майже тисячі років Покровська була центральною вулицею, що вела від порту до верхньої частини міста. Українці високо цінують цей будинок – один із небагатьох, які збереглися з ХІХ століття. Він стоїть поруч із Покровською церквою, збудованою у 1766 р. Над горою здіймаються шпилі Андріївської церкви в стилі бароко, побудованої у 1747–1753 рр.

Обгорілі рами двох вікон на другому поверсі нагадують про велику пожежу 1811 р. З тих часів збереглися ступки, пестики, маленькі пляшечки і глечики, і тепер їх можна побачити у постійній колекції експонатів у Галереї.

У 1886 р. будинок було передано у власність міста Києва, щоб розмістити у ньому притулок для людей похилого віку. Після більшовицької революції 1917 р. притулок закрили. У 1928 р. Покровську, 5 перетворили на комунальний житловий будинок, де, згідно із записами, проживало до 25 сімей.

Реставрація будинку у 1982 р. почала повертати йому планування і зовнішній вигляд 1808 р. Під час проведення реконструкції під фундаментом було знайдено рештки п’яти попередніх будинків, перший із яких датується ХІ століттям. Фрагменти кам’яної кладки, гончарні й керамічні витвори, вироби з каміння, металу і скла, знайдені під час реставрації, зараз виставлені у вітальні і в колекції археологічного музею заповідника «Стародавній Київ».

Понад 75 фахівців виконували роботи з реконструкції Покровської, 5. Там, де це тільки було можливо, вони використовували матеріали, які вживалися в 1808 році. П’ять світильників у кімнатах для прийомів і в кабінеті було вироблено у Львові між 1775 і 1810 рр. Інші бронзові світильники і свічники було виготовлено майстрами монастиря Печерської Лаври. Більшість металевих виробів – репродукції предметів з Монтичелло, дому Джефферсона, що був збудований у той самий період.

Рішення Президента, Кабінету Міністрів, мера Києва і заповідника «Стародавній Київ» передати будинок по вул. Покровській, 5 Сполученим Штатам Америки як резиденцію американських послів стало виявом щирої дружби між двома нашими країнами, що дедалі міцніє після проголошення Україною незалежності у 1991 році як суверенної демократичної держави.

The house was built for Samson Strelbitskiy in 1808. This roof beam (svolok) was discovered during the restoration and probably came from his father’s house. It was the custom to incorporate the svolok from the father’s house into the son’s new house.
