LETTER FROM THE OUTGOING “E” Brothers,

The past year has been, overall, a success with regards to alumni relations. With two major alumni events—the spring crawfish boil and the Founders’ Day events just last month—a renewed alumni newsletter, and a renewed commitment from the

chapter to alumni relations, we have seen increased alumni involvement in chapter events, stronger relations between the chapter and the Alumni Board of Trustees (ABT), and more alumni from the ‘80s and ‘90s express interest in reconnecting with the chapter. When I was first elected to the position of Alumni Secretary this time last year—just a few weeks out of pledgeship—I wasn’t exactly sure what I was getting into. What could someone who was just initiated possibly know about alumni relations? It was a daunting task at first, but it was ultimately a rewarding one. I’ve enjoyed seeing how the chapter has progressed over the years and hearing about the different traditions from some of the older guys. It’s

definitely given me a greater perspective on the fraternity, and has allowed me to see what a great experience Delta Chi has been to so many other people. All in all, working with all of you over the past year has been a great experience. I look forward to seeing how the next “E” takes alumni relations to the next level and I hope you enjoy my last issue of The Red & Buff Review.

2014 EXECUTIVE BOARD ELECTED, SWORN-IN Elections for the 2014 Executive Board took place on Sunday, November 3. This election process included the participation of the Alumni Board of Trustees in slating members for the Board. “A” (President): Bradley Guin Bradley is a sophomore studying political science from Haughton, LA. He has previously held the position of “E”. “B” (Vice-President): Matthew Murphey Matthew is a junior studying actuarial mathematics from Fort Worth, TX. He has previously held the positions of “D” and Scholarship Chair. “C” (Secretary): Stephen LeBlanc Stephen is a freshman studying civil engineering from Mandeville, LA. “D” (Treasurer): Robert Helm Robert is a junior studying biological science and history from Kenner, LA. He has previously held the positions of Recruitment Chairman and Community Service Chair.

“E” (Alumni Secretary): Ford Weiss Ford is a freshman studying business management from Naperville, IL. “F” (Risk Management Officer): Chandler Roe Chandler is a sophomore studying economics from Slidell, LA. He has previously held the positions of Social Chair and Judicial Board Justice. Associate Member Counselor (AMC): William Waltman William is a sophomore studying finance from Houston, TX. He has previously held the position of “C”. Recruitment Chairman: Bryce Marullo Bryce is a junior studying kinesiology with a concentration in physical therapy from Metairie, LA. The new Executive Board was sworn in on Sunday, November 24th.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: GLENN WEISS (’84) Glenn Weiss, originally from Memphis, Tennessee, was a founding father of the Delta Chi LSU chapter in 1982. While at LSU, Glenn was student body president and helped the newly chartered chapter to gain housing on campus while serving as chapter “E”. Glenn graduated with a degree in management in 1984 and moved to Dallas, Texas, starting his career with Clarke American. In 1988, he married Lynn Ford, also a from Tennessee and a Pi Phi from LSU. Glenn was promoted and transferred to Houston, Texas and then again to Chicago, Illinois. While in Chicago, Mr. Weiss obtained his M.B.A. with a concentration in finance from North Central College. Soon after graduation, he started his career in banking with Old Kent Bank where

he spent nine years as a trust officer and responsible for the institutional trust department. Glenn's next move in 2002 was to Northern Trust Bank where he currently services as the managing director for a wealth

advisory team. He is a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor and a Chartered Private Wealth Advisor and leads a team that serves the ultra high net worth. Glenn and Lynn have three children: Erica, a senior at Baylor University, Ford, a freshman and a newly initiated

Delta Chi at LSU, and Caroline, a freshman at Naperville North High School. Mr. Weiss serves on multiple boards in the Chicago area including: 360 Youth Services, and the North Central College Board of Trustees Associates. He has served as Delta Chi regent for Regent III and has served on ABT boards for UT, LSU and NIU.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: JOHN DUNLAP (’86) John B. Dunlap III is a charter member of the LSU Chapter of Delta Chi and was in its first pledge class in 1982, serving as the Colony’s first Rush Chairman. He became the Colony’s third “A” and accepted the Chapter Charter in 1984. After his service as “A”, he was elected “E” and was awarded the “E” Key at the International Convention in New Orleans in 1986. While a student at LSU, Dunlap served on the staff of The Reveille, was active in Student Government and was a member of the ROTC Corps of Cadets. Dunlap graduated from LSU in 1986 with a BA in history and a minor in journalism. He is a 1989 graduate of the Loyola University College of Law and a 2012 graduate of the U.S. Army War College, earning a master’s degree in Strategic Studies. He began his legal career as a prosecutor serving on active duty in the United States Army Judge Advocate General Corps. In 1990 he was deployed to Iraq for Operation Desert Shield / Desert Storm. Dunlap has been in the private practice of law in Baton Rouge, Louisiana since completion of his active duty tour in 1992, where he practices in the areas of construction law, business law and commercial litigation with the law firm Dunlap Fiore, LLC.

Dunlap is a colonel in the Louisiana National Guard and currently serves as the State Judge Advocate. In April 2004, he was mobilized for 18 months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as the Staff Judge Advocate of the 256th Brigade Combat Team. Since returning from Iraq in October 2005, he has served with the National Guard in operations supporting the response to Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav, Ike

and Isaac as well as the BP Oil Spill. He is active in the community and has served on several non-profit boards including the LSU Delta Chi House Corporation, the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, the Cadets of the Old War Skule, Friends of the Louisiana National Guard Museum, Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing Foundation, Greater Baton Rouge Hope Academy, March of Dimes, Good Fellows Good Samaritans and

Sunrise Rotary Club. He is currently a member of the LSU Chapter Alumni Board of Trustees. Dunlap is the recipient of many military awards and decorations including two Bronze Stars. He was awarded the Delta Chi Meritorious Service Award in 2002 for his distinguished service to the LSU Chapter. He has three daughters, Elizabeth, 21, Emily, 19 and Camille, 14.

RECAP: FOUNDERS’ DAY 2013 The LSU Chapter celebrated the 123rd anniversary of the founding of our Fraternity with a weekend of events from Friday, October 11 to Sunday, October 13. The Chapter hosted a successful private party at The Chimes for alumni and actives. Additionally, we held a special tailgate on Saturday for the LSU vs. Florida game, which included the participation of the University of Florida Chapter. The weekend culminated on Sunday with the initiation of the Sigma pledge class and the alumni ceremony. The Chapter would like to thank all alumni who participated over the weekend.

ALUMNI, ACTIVE AND CHAPTER ACHIEVEMENTS The LSU Chapter achieved the highest level in the Greek Assessment Program, an annual evaluation by the Office of Greek Life, for 2013: gold.

The LSU Chapter, in conjunction with Kappa Delta sorority, won 2nd place overall in the Homecoming lawn decoration contest. Alumnus Phillip Allen (’87) has moved back to Baton Rouge to take a position as a Clinical Assistant Professor with the LSU Department of Otolaryngology (head and neck surgery). Alumnus Grant Herrin (’07) was admitted to the Louisiana Bar after successfully passing the Louisiana Bar Exam. Alumnus Calder Lynch (’08) was

promoted to the position of Chief of Staff at the

Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. Alumnus Chris Rome (’10) was elected Deputy Chair to the Board of Directors for the Atlanta chapter of Young Professionals in

Transportation. Alumnus Manimogan Madiyazhagan (’12) accepted a position with Nestle Malaysia as a Packaging Technologist. Active Robert Helm was selected to serve on the Greek Board of Directors Greek Week committee, and was initiated into the Order of Omega, a Greek leadership honor society.

 

What ITB Stands For By Bradley Guin This article first appeared in the October 31 issue of The Odyssey, a student-run Greek life newspaper. It’s a simple set of letters: ITB, which otherwise stands for “in the bond.” Before joining a fraternity, these letters were Greek to me. Since then, however, these letters have come to represent a deeper interconnectedness with my fraternity and the Greek system in general. While this acronym is often used in closing emails or other various forms of communication with members of your chapter, alumni or other members of the Greek community, what exactly does it represent? As individual members of fraternities and sororities here at LSU, we ultimately belong to a larger community that has been in existence here at our state’s flagship since the 1860s. In today’s fast-paced world of social media and trends, it’s important for us to appreciate the long-held tradition that is Greek life.

ITB represents this tradition and connectedness of the Greek community is a simple and concise way. It reminds us of our roots, our brotherhood and sisterhood, and ultimately serves as a symbol of our bonds as Greeks. It summarizes something so complex and intricate as our Greek system, and allows us to relate to our fellow brothers and sisters. Whenever I receive an email or letter signed “ITB,” I immediately recognize its importance and appreciate even greater whatever the actual message is.

It’s an often used quote, but I feel it

summarizes what ITB is able to convey so

concisely: “From the

outside looking in you can never

understand it. From the inside looking out you can never explain it.” ITB is able to summarize our core values and tenants as Greeks, the lessons taught to us through our rituals, and the ties we share as brothers and sisters. So, next time you sign an email or letter with "ITB," I urge you to consider the deeper meaning and what it means to share the bond that we do as Greeks. ITB.
