4 Embracing the Light of ChanukahRabbi Joseph H. Krakoff • [email protected]

Follow me on Twitter: @rabbikrakoff

Every year, at about this time, I ask myself the followingquestion: What makes the holiday of Chanukah secondonly to Passover in its popularity among American Jews?

I suppose it depends upon whom you ask. Is it the gift-givingnature of the festival? Is it the delicious jelly doughnuts, latkesand chocolate gelt we get to consume? Or is it the beautifulsongs we sing, and the joy and happiness we feel when wegather with family and friends?

Maybe Chanukah is observed in such a widespread fashionamong our people because of the accessible nature of kindlingthe menorah each night. But lighting the Chanukah candles isnot any more accessible than lighting the Shabbat candles everyFriday night. In fact, the blessings we recite are practically thesame.

So perhaps, then, it is because we are drawn in by the miraculousnature of the story itself - as we recount how a single cruse ofpure oil lasted for eight days when it was only supposed to beenough for just twenty four hours. After all, who doesn’t love tohear a tale whose lesson is focused on some great miracle?

But the true story of Chanukah is about numerous miracles.Looking back in history, the years between 176 and 164 BCEwere critical for the Jewish people and Judaism as a religion. Itwas in the year 176 BCE that Antiochus IV became the rulerof the Syrian Empire, whose kingdom included the Land ofIsrael. Before long, Antiochus began to refer to himself asEpiphanes, meaning ‘God made manifest.’ Antiochus quicklyinstituted Hellenism- a civilization based on the Greek culture-that by decree he mandated was to be the compulsory way oflife for everyone. While some Jews were drawn in and compelledby the abundance of new theatres, gymnasia, and the overallworship of human beauty and strength, many others realizedthat this was idolatry, and it threatened the very essence of Jewishbelief, practice and ultimately, survival.

Seeing that something had to be done right away, a spiritualband of Jews - known as the Maccabees - rose to power todefend Jewish distinctiveness against the dominant Greekculture. While part of the Maccabees’ focus was ridding theTemple of the Zeus statute and purifying the altar so that itcould once again be used for worship, more than anything else, the Maccabees were fighting desperately against a force thatwanted the Jews to completely abandon their religion and theirculture. Judah Maccabee and his followers unhesitatingly stoodup and affirmed that until their dying day, they would hold onto what made them unique as a people.

ankfully, despite mind-boggling odds against the fierce

and homogenizing Syrian-Greek army, the Maccabees were ableto defeat their enemies and eventually restore Jewish sovereigntyover the Land thereby ushering in an era of renewed Jewishcultural, spiritual, and political power and authenticity.

No doubt- it would have been a lot easier for the Jewishpeople to assimilate and leave their religious lifestyles behind. In doing so, they would have immediately fit in and quitecertainly have suffered much less persecution.

And so, as you can well imagine, the holiday of Chanukahcame to be- more than anything else- a celebration focused onaffirming the pride and joy of being Jewish amid a largely non-Jewish world. e holiday of Chanukah is about daring to bedifferent and celebrating that difference. For at its essence,Chanukah is about Jewish survival based on Jewish self-affirmation.Yes, being Jewish has always meant- not being better- but beingdifferent.

At its core, Chanukah stands as the celebration of the victoryof those who refused to conform. And I don’t need to tell youthat the very same pressure still exists today. We try so hard tolook and dress like everyone else, to talk like everyone else, andto fit in so perfectly and completely.

ere is no question that we live in multiple civilizations atthe same time – Jewish and American, Chanukah and Christmas, and the list goes on. Learning to balance the emotional de-mands of American culture with the spiritual obligations ofJewish civilization is both the challenge and the opportunityof what it means to live as a Jew in America. is is no doubta time on the calendar filled with emotional ambivalences- andwe are presented with the chance to reaffirm unconditionalpride in who we are and what we believe.

As Chanukah begins again (on Friday night, December 8,2012), and we actively participate in bringing renewed lightinto this increasingly dark and scary world, let us recall withgreat affection and appreciation what the Maccabees did- as wellas so many of our ancestors throughout Jewish history- so thatwe can be free today to observe a religion that offers us so much.

is year as we kindle one more light each night, seeking toascend in holiness, may we affirm the Chasidic teaching thatthe Chanukah candles truly are the search lights for what isprecious in our tradition and in each one of us, helping us toshine more fully and completely as authentic Jews in the modernworld.

Susan, Atara, Micah and Elan join me in wishing you aChag Urim Sameach- a holiday filled with light and happinessnow and always!

14 Pioneering New Approaches toJewish Life and Learning

Rabbi Aaron L. Starr • [email protected] me on Twitter: @rabbistarr

Director of Education and Youth

It is a Jewish tradition to give children candy when theystudy Torah so that they will associate the sweetness of thecandy with the sweetness of Torah. e educational theory

of summer camping is similar: If children come to associateJewish life with sweetness – the smell of pine trees, thecloseness of friends, laughter in the bunk – what they practiceand what they learn at camp will remain with them for alifetime.

WHY? Camp is fun. Camp is Jewish. Camp makes Judaismfun!

Services, Hebrew, Jewish Songs, and saying blessings beforeand after a meal all become connected to being in a favoriteplace with favorite people. is association stays with a childthroughout his/her life causing him/her to seek out Jewish ex-periences and communities so that they can recapture some ofthat wonderful spirit. Jewish camping also connects Judaismwith daily living. Judaism is in the air, the trees, the grass, thepool, the ball game, the skinned knee, the ice cream, and evenin the mail from home. Summer camping is the only way topack Judaism into every experience; it is—for children—theonly way to find Mt. Sinai in the Midwest.

Our regional Conservative camp is Camp Ramah. Just twohours north of Toronto, Camp Ramah is located on a beauti-ful lake in the heart of Muskoka. e camp offers extensive wa-terfront activities, as well as a wide range of sports, sports, andspecialty programs. Ramah campers, grades 2-10, developskills, build close friendships, and create memories that last alifetime. Moreover, they are inspired by Jewish role models andare immersed in a loving, Jewish environment that enriches thesoul.

If you would like to talk more about Jewish camping or toprovide financial assistance to a student interested a campexperience this coming summer please contact me. CongregationShaarey Zedek offers camp scholarships as well; please contactCSZ Office Manager Shelley Golsky at 248/357-5544 or e-mail [email protected] for more information.

May our children always associate Judaism with fun . . .and with God, Torah, Israel, and a life of meaning.

Chanukah ReflectionsAlexis Zimberg • [email protected] Family Educator

Shalom! As temperatures drop and our hours of sunlightshorten, our thoughts turn to the nes, gadol, hayah, andsham of our spinning driedels. But Chanukah is about

more than just eating deep-fried potato latkes and gamblingfor gelt. After sunset, we gather together near the doorwaysand window sills of our homes to spread flames from theshamash to its neighboring candles. e mitzvah of theholiday lies not only in the lighting of the Chanukiah, butalso in sharing its warm glow with friends, family members, and the unknown passersby.

In this busy age, we work late, we have piano lessons, andwe attend sleepovers. We have homework to complete anddinner parties to prepare. What better time than now to teachyour family about the lessons of Chanukah? Many Jewishlaws and traditions have much to do with bringing awarenessof God’s presence in our lives into each moment andChanukah is no exception. Upon gathering together aroundan unlit Chanukiah, you could ask your family to take aminute to consider and appreciate the company around them. After lighting candles, you might ask your family to bask inthe silence of the moment to see if they can hear the fire flick-ering. While bathing in the Chanukiah's flames, you can talkwith your children about the symbolism of bringing light intoyour home by treating someone with extra kindness whenthey are having a difficult day or doing Tikkun Olam in yourcommunity. Around the dinner table, you can recounthistories about the miracles of the holiday-the triumph of theMaccabees over the Greeks or the one-day supply of oil thatburned in the Holy Temple for eight days-or the miraclesexperienced by your own family this year.

Wishing you heaping portions of applesauce and sourcream, all the gelt in the bag, and the sustained warmth ofthe glowing candles on the eight nights of Chanukah.

With Rabbi Joseph Krakoffursdays, November 1, 8, 15, 29, December 6, 13, 2011:15 a.m. –12:30 p.m.

Does God need our prayers or do we need them? What happens when we pray? Do we change theworld or do we transform ourselves? Sometimes we pray so fast in a language we do not entirelyunderstand that it is so easy to miss the point. Prayer is about slowing down and expressinggratitude. We will slow down and delve into the significance and power behind our traditionalprayers. It will be an experience sure to bring inspiration and deeper meaning to our lives.Tuition: $100

In this New Year 5773, one “goal” or “hope”I have for my family is...• something ritual in the home

e.g., candlelighting, making challah, sayingShema before bed, or Motzi before a meal.

• something tzedakah-orientede.g., making regular visits to a senior center, starting to compost, or having children putcoins into a tzedakah box before Shabbat.

• something synagaogue-orientede.g., attending Shabbat services twice amonth, attending synagogue social events,or inviting children’s Religious Schoolfriends for dinner.

• something else you can think ofthat makes you a stronger family.
