Don trained as an electronic technician in the Dominion Physical Laboratory (DPL) at the DSIR, Gracefield, which built the ‘radar cop’ prototype and had the first transistors in NZ. In 1959 Don went to Antarctica with others from DPL. In Wellington the ship on-loaded grenades and anti-tank mines, ‘instruments’ for research. Don married upon return to NZ. He spent a further 12 months in Antarctica in 1962 before transferring to the Animal Physiology unit at DSIR, Palmerston North. After completing his degree at Massey University in the 1970s, Don’s position was DSIR Scientist. In 1990 he moved to the PN College of Education, where his wife was a receptionist, and set up a student record system. Don retired in 2000, the year his wife passed away. He is currently researching and writing a book, which involves travel to Canada and England. Guest Speaker Clare Randall, CEO of Arohanui Hospice, gave an excellent comprehensive talk. A misconception is that the Hospice is where people with cancer go to die. In fact, people of all ages with a range of life-limiting illnesses receive palliative care. Last year 800 in- or day stay-patients, and their families, were cared for, from a wide region covered by Mid-Central and Wanganui DHBs. About 16% of patients are admitted to the 10-bed In-Patient Unit, staying on average for six days. Palliative care, medical and clinical specialists work with GPs, district nurses, pharmacists, social workers, spiritual carers and family supporters. Some 620 volunteers give 6000 hours a month in a variety of roles. Funding comes from the community (41% = $2.5 million in 2015) and from DHBs. A significant challenge is an increasing proportion of the population that is ageing. Clare invited people to look around the Hospice. Arch’s Column A large steel company, feeling it was time for a shakeup, hired a new CEO. The new boss was determined to rid the company of all slackers. On a tour of the facilities, he noticed a guy leaning against a wall. The room was full of workers and he wanted to let them know that he meant business. He asked the guy, ‘How much money do you make a week?’ A little surprised, the young man looked at him and said, ‘I make $600 a week. Why?’ The CEO said, ‘Wait right here.’ He walked back to his office, came back in five minutes, and handed the guy $2,400 in cash and said, ‘Here's four weeks' pay. Now GET OUT and don't come back.’ Feeling pretty good about himself the CEO looked around the room and asked, ‘Does anyone want to tell me what that pillock did here?’ From across the room a voice said, ‘Pizza delivery guy from Domino's.’
