Lesson Objective• 2nd Grade

Math Standard #3 Objective 2a: The student will be able to identify and measure inches and feet to the nearest unit.

Integrating TechnologyFirst I wanted to introduce students to the measurement concept by reading them a book by Leo Leoni called Inch by Inch. This book exposes students to the idea of inches by comparing an inch to an inchworm. I was able to use the document camera to execute a shared reading experience. This was helpful because the pictures were detailed and small. On the document camera all students could view them quite easily making it easier for students to answer questions and participate in conversation surrounding the book.

Cont…The second part of the lesson was actually teaching students to use the ruler. With the document camera, I was able to successfully model using a ruler to measure several objects as they watched. I found this to be much more beneficial than attempting to hold an object in the air for students to see and attempting to measure it. I was also able to enlist student help after modeling. I had several students walk up to the document camera and help me measure an object in front of the entire class while the others participated by counting along and watching.

How did it go?• Very well. Students were 100% engaged the

entire lesson.– Read the book in a new way– Involved students by helping them see activities

clearly• And…students loved using the technology which made

them behave well to get “chosen” to help

Technology Integration Principles

• Students Use of Technology– Students helped model and practice

• Technology Use Is Essential– Students may not have been able to see clearly if I had

not used technology which would have effected their achievement

• Focus on Learning Task– Technology supported the lesson, didn’t replace it.

• Added Value– These activities would be very difficult and not as

effective without the technology

Overall…Success
