Post 16 Trip to The Old Bailey
The Sociology and Law Department ran a joint trip to the Old Bailey/Royal Courts of Justice. The Old Bailey hears more murder trials than any other court in the country.
We took a group of year 12 and 13 students to visit the courts and sat in on a number of trials (including a few murder trials!)
Students were given a tour of the Royal Courts of Justice – we learnt that some of the barristers there can charge £2000 AN HOUR. High profile cases such as the dispute between Apple and Samsung can run into millions.
The tour guide told us about the history of the courts, how the courts were designed about built in the late 1800s and where the top barristers sit.
Miss Barber—Sociology
Message from Head of School
I am writing to you today to provide what update I can. We have all now had a chance to read the recent report and try and digest its findings. I cannot say anymore on that at this stage but as soon as I know and can, I will.
What I can do is provide an update on Ravensbourne. Today I have spoken to all staff and students regarding this matter. My message was clear. There will be no impact on the quality of education at Ravensbourne. We have a fantastic set of both students, staff, parents and carers. I will still be here to ensure that they will be the best that they can be. If anything this makes my resolve to do that stronger. I reminded students that their behaviour is always excellent and that it will remain so. The way they have behaved today has been impeccable and the comments made have been caring, considered and inspirational.
At the moment the students deserve the very best from me. You have my word I will deliver that.

Exciting news for TRS from The Mental Health Foundation!
The Ravensbourne School has been working closely with The Mental Health Foundation for a
number of years. Last year our Year 7 students (now Year 8) took part in The Peer Education Project
led by The Mental Health Foundation and trained by Miss Barker, where they learned about mental
health and wellbeing.
The Mental Health Foundation's Peer Education project equips school staff to recruit and train a
group of Peer Educators from year 10 and year 12. These students were highly trained and supported
by fantastic resources produced by the Mental Health Foundation. Our Peer Educators delivered a
syllabus of universal mental health literacy lessons to Year 7 students, which will continue this
academic year.
Due to the success of the programme, we have been asked by The Mental Health Foundation to
appear as a school in their Christmas Appeal. We are privileged to contribute towards the Mental
Health Foundation’s vision of a world with good mental health for all. This week, representatives from
the foundation will be coming into the school to photograph, record and interview students who
participated in the project last year and record some of our wonderful Peer Educators delivering a
session.
If you would like to find out more about the Peer Education Project and the work of The Mental Health foundation, please go to https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/. Be sure to look out for us in the Christmas Appeal 2018!

Odd Socks Day is an opportunity for students to celebrate their individuality and uniqueness, and learn to accept
each other regardless of difference. We would love it if you can get involved with this.
Socks can be as weird and wonderful as you like, and there will be prizes available for the best odd socks! Full
school uniform will need to be worn on the day, but your odd socks can be visible.
We would ask that you bring a small contribution of £1 to donate to the Anti Bullying Alliance if you are able to.

Year 7 Reading Programme
At TRS we recognise the importance of reading for pleasure.
We hope all parents and carers encourage their children to read regularly. Just having a conversation about
reading is extremely supportive.
To help empower every Year 7 student to be a strong and active reader, and to nurture the habit of reading for
pleasure, we have introduced a Year 7 Reading Programme.
Year 7 classes visit the Library every two weeks where they have the opportunity to browse and to borrow books.
The students try to read a book every two weeks and during their Library visits they complete tasks, from a
specially designed activity pack, based on the book of their choice that they have just read.
If you would like further information about this programme or how you can support your child with their reading,
please do not hesitate to contact the Librarian, Ms Roberts, email: [email protected]
Geography Trip To Italy 2018
Monday
On Monday we arrived in Italy after a very early start and were raring to go! We spent the day with our guide visiting the coastal towns of
Amalfi, Ravello and Positano where we had the opportunity to visit the markets and eat lots of pizza! Unfortunately the weather wasn’t on
our side but it didn’t dampen our spirits. Later on, we travelled to our hotel in Sorrento and settled in before dinner of pasta and chicken. In
the evening we had free time in the town before collapsing, exhausted into bed.
Tuesday
On Tuesday we visited Herculaneum in which we were able to see the ruins left after the destruction of the town, due to the volcanic pyro-
clastic flow from Mount Vesuvius. Further into our day we travelled to Pompei, where we had the opportunity to see plaster-encased bodies
of the victims who were buried by the ashes. In addition, we got to see the village which was once filled with people, living their lives.
Wednesday
On Wednesday we got a ferry from Sorrento to Capri, a small island off of the coast of Italy. Here we had a boat trip along the coast and we
were able to see the cliffs and amazing views, including an arch that had been formed and the white grotto. We visited the beach and swam
in the sea which was surprisingly warm for late October. Later that evening we visited the various shops in the harbour and ate ice cream
whilst watching the sunset.
Thursday
Sadly, Thursday was our last day in Italy and after leaving the hotel we departed for a local Mozzarella farm where we were shocked to
learn it takes 7 hours to make! We had the opportunity to try their local olive oils, cheese, ham and marmalade. Leaving very full, we left for
our next activity, pizza making! Here we made our own pizzas and took part in some traditional Italian dancing. It was really fun and one of
the best parts of the trip. The last part of our trip was a visit to the Gelateria where we were lucky enough to taste some of their homemade
ice cream, not that we needed anymore food! Finally, we travelled to the airport, leaving with amazing memories.
Thank you to Mr Lucas, Miss O’Dell, Miss Barber and Mr Shuttleworth for organising such a fun trip!

Mr O’Shaughnessy at BFCA on match day helping the BTEC Media students.
During the October half-term the Bromley Football Club Academy players and Ravensbourne 6th form students were overwhelmed with a special surprise visit from legendary x Portugal European Cup, Premier league and
Champions league winners Tiago Mendes and Ricardo Carvalho.
They were attending Bromley Football Club to extend their UEFA A-License research and developing their practises
with the BFCA players. An amazing and unique experience for Bromley Football Club and all students involved.
Additional to the above; the following BFCA students completed their F.A. refereeing qualification and are now fully qualified referees. This is an amazing achievement and something that makes the 6th form at TRS special through offering tailor made vocational awards and will certainly enhance each individuals learning journey, enabling them to
gain part-time employment through grass roots and secondary school football sections.
