Page 1 T HE R ANDWICK B UZZ Issue 1 Thursday, 7 December 2019 Term 1 - Week 2, 2019 Principal’s Message Welcome back to the 2019 school year and especially to new families who have joined our school. We believe you have made a great choice for your child and encourage you to get involved with the school community as much as possible. Congratulations to Rachael Chisholm on gaining the substantive (permanent) Deputy Principal position replacing Helen Te Rata. My special thanks to Rachael for the marvellous way in which she carried out the Principal’s role at the end of 2018 while I was having surgery for a fall, sustained at school. As a result of Rachael’s appointment Quetzal Bell gained the permanent Assistant Principal position from an earlier panel. Congratulations to Quetzal. We also welcome Lauren Sten as Relieving Deputy Principal and Marissa Saucis as Relieving Assistant Principal and Stage leader for Early Stage 1. We also welcome existing staff from Maternity Leave and overseas travel. Please see a full list of staff and classes in this newsletter. Communication is the essential key to a successful partnership between parents, staff and students and the first formal meetings to establish that are the Parent Teacher Information sessions tonight. You are also welcome to seek a meeting with your child’s teacher at any time but please avoid drop off times as the teacher must be focussed on getting children quickly into class and settled for the day’s learning. Most teachers will share their email with you so simply send your request or alternatively email [email protected]. Thursday 14/2/2019 Induction Ceremony Monday 18/2/2019 P&C Meeting, 7pm New Admin Building, Avoca Street entrance Wednesday 20/2/2019 Swimming carnival Friday 29/3/2019 Winter PSSA Trials What’s on? au. I am available to speak with parents and try to be about the playground as much as possible but you will always have your questions answered more quickly by speaking to the class teacher and/or their Assistant Principal. For wider school concerns contact the Deputy Principals: Lauren Sten (general welfare/support, Stage 1 and 2) or Rachael Chisholm (organisational matters, technology, Early Stage 1 or Stage 3) or myself at randwick-p.school@ det.nsw.edu.au. Construction We have been pleased to return to most building works nearing completion. The new share space for Year 2/OOSH Kinders has been refurbished as have the senior toilets. We hope to have the infants toilets similarly upgraded later in the year. The playground has been a little slower taking shape due to the scope of the works. All drainage has had to be replaced due to age and digging new drainage through rock has proved to be time consuming. The current scope of works is: Feb 8 - Hall complete Feb 28 - back playground equipment/ Basketball court/AMS access completed ready for use Feb 5 - playground/refurb of front cottage playground underway with completion mid-March. This is being financed by P&C. All works completed Term 1 2019. Like you, we look forward to a speedy completion and I will be meeting with Project Managers and builders weekly for updates and pushing for a quick completion. I thank staff and parents for their understanding and working around the various changes which will result in a considerably enlarged playground and improved sports facilities. FAQrsquoS Homework The school supported by its community PampC and Department of Education has guidelines to set and follow up completion of homework The responsibility lies with parents about how this is implemented Where family commitments or structure prevents this parents or senior students should communicate this to the teacher If parents wish to have further time eg over weekends please let the teacher know

Always let the class teacher know if homework is causing issues for your family early A hostile homework environment will be counterproductive

Parents are encouraged to enjoy homework with their child NOT enforce it The growth to independence will be gradual and dependent on each child and their skills One of my children was independent by Year 1 and another by University

Setting the pattern early that learning is ongoing and lifelong and not confined to school universitywork

Provide ongoing accurate information to understand how easy or difficult the homework is for their child

Early yearrsquos homework focuses on acquisition of essential literacy and numeracy skills Increasingly through the grades the focus will change to independent completion problem solving research skills and presentationcommunication skills to enable further successful study

Remember your child is your child so you make the decision on homework We provide the support

FAQ 2 - PSSA selection - Year 3-6 This is not a beginners program but for students with some practical skill Further detail will be provided in the next newsletter from Miss Robertson

I am the proud mum of Paige and Riley who have been at Randwick since kindy and are now starting in years 5 and 3 respectively

It was always my intention to be involved in the school My mum was involved in my school which showed me how critical parent involvement is to enable schools to achieve things beyond what the Department will provide

Over the years I have found all kinds of ways to help out at school I have undertaken odd projects tutored through the SAMP and SARP projects painted faces and sold raffle tickets at the BBQs packed calendar art and Easter raffle tickets counted cash after fundraising There are so many ways to contribute
