1. Citrus Gleaning November 16, 2013Raindrops & Second Harvest Food Bank

2. On Saturday, November 16th, we volunteered to help Second Harvest Food Bank pick fruit at a local citrus farm in Plaquemines Parish. This is the second year our group has volunteered at the gleaning. The Buford Family contacted Second Harvest and generously donated the leftover fresh fruit available to help families in need. However, without the help of volunteers this task would not be possible. Second Harvest Food Bank depends on thousands of volunteers every day to carry out its mission of leading the fight against hunger by sorting/packing donated food and preparing hot meals for Kids Cafe program by the community. Fighting hunger in the community is a large task for one organization or person to do - the key is to work together as a community or a team. 3. We signed in, got instructions on what to do and got started working. First, we built some boxes for the fruit we were about to collect. 4. Our team of six worked 5 hours and helped pick over 25,000 pounds of fresh fruit for families who might not be able to provide fresh produce to their families or have enough food to feed their family. Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans & Acadiana is leading the fight against hunger in south Louisiana through food distribution, advocacy, education and disaster response. 9. 1 in 5 children in Louisiana are at risk for hunger. 1 in 6 households in Louisiana is struggling with hunger meaning one of your friends, family members or neighbors is food insecure. Second Harvest Food Bank serves approximately 263,000 different individuals annually across 23 south Louisiana parishes including 82,000 children and 40,000 seniors. Second Harvest Food Bank serves families from Lake Charles to the Louisiana/Mississippi state line through 253 faith-based and nonprofit organizations.
