If you recall, we hear about this in the Discipleship talk on Saturday afternoon on the Walk weekends. Pastor Stephanie’s sermon that Sunday was based on Acts 8:26-40, where Philip is instructed by God to go south on the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza, where he came upon the Ethiopian eunuch who was studying a passage from Isaiah. The eunuch asked Philip who the prophet might be referring to in this passage. Philip interpreted that passage for the eunuch, and was then invited to join up with the Ethiopian for a while and continued to share the Good News. Pastor Stephanie challenged each person there that day to find a Bible scripture that spoke to us; one that told our own personal story. The purpose behind this assignment was so that when we find ourselves in a position to be a disciple, we can use that scripture to share the Good News and be able to explain how that scripture applies to us in our own personal Walk. PSWTE President’s Letter

What’s Your Scripture? What’s Your Story?

A couple of months ago I attended worship at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Anacortes. Pastor Stephanie Hankey was wrapping up a sermon series about Jesus’ Great Commission – how we are to go forth and proclaim the Good News.

I didn’t have to think too long to recall my most favorite Bible scripture (I do have a few favorites)––Luke 15:4-9, the parable of the lost sheep. Why? Because I was like that little sheep––lost, not feeling worthy to be part of the fold. But the Shepherd cared for me so much that he left the other 99 and came in search of me, and when he found me took me in his arms and held me close to His heart. He then brought me back to the fold, asking everyone to “rejoice”, for I had been lost, but now I was found. Talk about the Shepherd’s Love!!

So I ask you – What is your scripture? What is your story?

God Bless you all. Carol Decker

Lay Director Thoughts -Walk #214

My walk with Christ is always changing. I encourage everyone on the Walk to Emmaus not to become comfort-able with their current walk with Christ status and to trust and fully embrace Him when he points you in an uncertain direction. Kevin Pickard Lay Director, WTE 214

Lay Director Thoughts -Walk #215

As I take time to write this article, I begin to reflect on my journey since my walk in Oct

'99. I was very reluctant to go. I was pregnant at the time I was approached. My ex-husband

was so "on-board" and really wanted to us to go at the same time so I agreed. It was going to

be in my hometown and at my church, so I knew I wouldn't be too far away from my kids

who were 3yr and 6 months old at the time. Very nervous on Thursday, I actually liked the

Silent Retreat. By the end of the weekend, I felt different. I actually got up to the podium at

Closura, with many "gasps" in surprise. Never thought or had a desire to be a Lay Director at

that point.

With many bumps and turns in my journey since then, I'm now being blessed to assist

God and lead a team! The theme "Giving All to Him!", is based on the fact that I'm not in

control of my life. It is in His control, His time table. I have to give everything to Him.

Scripture is Philippians 4:13; "I can do everything through Him who gives me strength." The

logo is inspired by a photo my dad took many years ago and a picture my daughter drew.

Both are of a sunset. The sea turtles are special to me as they helped bring me "back."

Meanings of a sea turtle are Healing, Strength, Courage, Protection and Perseverance. I

basically gave everything I am to Him to survive.

I have been very blessed during this time of planning. We have a wonderful team that

God is putting together. I'm very blessed that I get the chance to serve as Lay Director in my

home church. I also get to serve along side my wonderful friend, Deidre Arnold, who is my

ALD. We took our walks together in October 1999! Please continue to pray for the pilgrims

and the team as God continues to work!

PSWTE Supply Trailer Update

We are happy to report that our new Supply Trailer worked absolutely great

for the Summer Walk. The next step is to build shelving; thus making it eas-

ier to retrieve and store the many boxes of supplies. We are still looking for

help with transporting the trailer to the Walk locations and storage between

the Walks. If you are interested, please contact Scott Coffinger.

Walks #214 & 215

Please visit www.mapquest.com or your favorite map site!

This year the Board made the decision to reduce the overall team size to correlate with the reduced number of pilgrims attending the recent walks, with the option to increase team size as more pilgrims are added. The rationale behind this was to reduce the number of people in the talk room so as not to overwhelm the few pilgrims. This Summer Walk was the official “kick off” of the new model. While the new model on paper is feasible, as with most “new” things, we have experienced some growing pains/drawbacks to this model, especially with the reduced kitchen and palanca teams. With that said, the Board will be looking at our team siz-ing again and hopefully come up with a plan to tweak the issues experienced in June. I would like to thank all of you who have provided feedback. Your inputs will be shared with the Board as we discuss this at our next Board meeting. -- Carol Decker

Musicians Database. The Music Committee continues to work on updating the master

database to include information on musicians (i.e., instruments, percussion, vocals). Un-

fortunately we have not devised a way to gather that information on new pilgrims. If you

are a new pilgrims (in the last 2-3 years), and have musical gifts that you would like to

share with the Emmaus community on a song team, please send an email to John Decker

([email protected]). If you are not sure John has your information in the database,

send him an email to confirm. We would be delighted to share your information with fu-

ture Worship Team leaders. Also, if you are currently in our musician database and wish

to no longer be included on this Worship Team database sort, please let John know.

Christmas Ultreya

Save the date! This year’s Christmas Ultreya is scheduled

for Saturday evening, December 7. Final plans and loca-

tion will be sent in an “e-blast” from the President of

WTE in early November.

More notes from the President:

Sponsorship – I was asked to give the Sponsorship Talk at the last 4th Day Celebration. As I read

through the sponsorship material on the website and in the 4th Day book, plus some notes from a previous

Sponsorship talk, I recalled how excited I was to be asked to attend a Walk to Emmaus weekend and how

much fun I have had sponsoring individuals. Our community is experiencing fewer and fewer pilgrims on

our Walks. We need sponsors. I hope you will all look around your congregations or among your circle

of friends and think about who you would like to sponsor. Who do you know that would enjoy developing

a deeper relationship with God through the Walk to Emmaus weekend? Perhaps you could talk with your

pastor and ask if there is someone in your church who has shown Christian leadership potential that would

enjoy the weekend experience. Please begin by praying, and then ask them. If the cost is a factor,

consider asking someone to co-sponsor with you to share the cost. And remember, not everyone that is

asked will agree to go the first time you ask; but they will never go if they aren’t asked.

Requests to Serve. I believe that most of you that have served on a Walk will agree that it is truly a

wonderful (not to mention fun) experience. Some have gone so far as to say it was far better than

attending as a pilgrim. Can you remember sneaking around so as not to be seen by the pilgrims, or sorting

bags and bags of palanca, or setting the tables for the meals, or watching the pilgrims at the talk room

tables as they hear the talks and experience the love and grace through all the actions of those serving, or

experiencing Agape from a team perspective? Serving on a Walk provides an opportunity to not only

serve the pilgrims (and each other), but also provides an opportunity for you to growth in your Christian

walk. While I know that serving on a walk is not for everyone, I do hope that you, especially those who

have not served in the last year, will consider submitting a Request to Serve on one of the upcoming

Walks. Recent sponsors – why not ask your pilgrim to serve with you? Information for the 2014 Walks

is provided later in this Gazette so that you can plan ahead for the Walk you would like to serve on. The

application is online under the Fourth Day tab on our website...pswte.org. No prior experience is

needed; just a desire to serve. Note: There are still opportunities to serve on the Fall Walks. Let's

help these LD's fill their teams.
