AISD & UT Officials Swap Cars for Golf Carts to Support Local Students During Difficult Economic Times Austin, Texas – April 28, 2011 – The Austin Independent School District and The University of Texas join forces with Communities In Schools (CIS) to create an official send-off for local tech entrepreneur, Manoj Saxena, who is racing cross-country to support our local public schools. A school bus “pace car” will lead representatives from UT, AISD, City of Austin, Travis County and CIS in a golf cart race symbolizing their long standing partnership - working together to keep kids in school. Austin-based Saxena Family Foundation and Communities In Schools are joining together to sponsor the kick-off event and the entire cross-country motorsports race known as “The Race To Win,” to raise awareness and support for dropout prevention. Manoj Saxena best described the inspiration for his cross-country race when he said "Education is THE Race for our kids to win.” Manoj designed The Race to Win concept to raise awareness about the dropout epidemic plaguing our nation as well as generate support for the dropout prevention and academic support services Communities In Schools provides. Communities In Schools is the nation’s top dropout prevention organization, working in public schools to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. During the May 2 nd Kick-off Event, over 150 local students and business leaders will also have the chance to inspect exotic cars on display in a unique car show and witness a professional driving demonstration by world- class race car drivers Derek Daly and Bill Dollahite as well as Dr. Timothy George, the Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Dell Children’s Medical Center. Golf cart race participants include Austin Police Chief, Art Acevedo; Travis County Sheriff, Greg Hamilton; The University of Texas Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement, Dr. Gregory Vincent; AISD Chief Schools Officer, Dr. Paul Cruz and AISD School Board President, Mark Williams. What: The kick-off for The Race To Win -- a cross-country motorsports event When: Monday, May 2, 2011 – 1:30 to 3:30 pm Where: Driveway Austin Motorsports Academy and Retreat, 8400 Delwau Lane, Austin, TX 78725 Who: Celebrity guests, local students, key education advocates, prominent business professionals, representatives from The University of Texas and the Austin Independent School District About the Cross-country race - “The Race To Win”: The Race to Win race is both an endurance cross-country race and individual timed track races. The event involves a race-modified Porsche 911 GT3 RS driven coast-to-coast by Manoj Saxena and a Co-driver, Richard Zimmerman. In the endurance portion, the car will be driven from race track to race track, while respecting speed limits and without the benefit of support crews. Race track events will be time trials competing against the tracks’ fastest times. Saxena will stop at four major cities educating middle and high school children from the local Communities In Schools affiliates focusing on the science and technology of auto-racing and importance of staying in school.
