Trends: International Higher Education 1/3
• Internationalisation is more important than ever– Demographic changes– Increased interdependency of HEIs/HE systems– Labour market requirements - globalisation– Political challenges– Rankings– Financial issues – Global competition for talent, etc etc
• HE internationalisation is unequally distributed in Europe– EAIE Barometer, mobility flows, ERC grants etc.– The gap seems to be widening, or at least not narrowing
Trends: International Higher Education 2/3
• Degree mobility increasing globally– Traditional source countries becoming target
countries• Credit mobility becoming more globalised
– Partly due to Erasmus+• Institutions becoming more selective in
partnerships• MOOCs, Branch Campuses, Joint degrees
stalling???
Trends: International Higher Education 3/3• Internationalisation is much more complex than before
– Moved much beyond student mobility– Constantly new issues emerging
• Rankings, TNE, Branch campuses, MOOCs, Strategic Partnerships and Networks, Supporting refugees or threatened scholars, Digitalisation of services, Recruitment of academic staff, IABs…
– New types of actors and partnerships• Public and private: cities, regions, companies, consultants, student orgs…
– Much for research, use of data required– International Offices are not (or should not be) the only places
supporting and being involved in internationalisation• Career offices, Language centres, Human resources etc etc
• Continuous development necessary, internationalisation requires increased professionalism, staff training, effective networking
