The Long Way Sew Sister Cover

Please follow these instructions for making a cover for your Sew Sister.

There are many other ways to do it but this is how I did my first few.

This is what the cover will look like when finished.

Step 1

Choose a 4 way stretchy fabric, Ponti which is a little thicker is a good choice. Some ladies like a silky fabric so your clothes slip over easily.

Make sure you have at least

2 of: the length your Sew Sister x the width of your Sew Sister.

Cut each of the pieces in half length wise.

Step 2.

Fold over 2 inches of the length and pin down the centre front. Stretch so the fabric is nice and taught. Poke pins in to keep it in place.

Make sure you fold over about 2 – 4 inches on the back before pinning down. This excess will be used to make the legs and crotch.

Step 3.

Pin down the sides, the neck and the shoulder seam and bottom of the legs.

Step 4.

If you have a larger bust or curvier areas, you may need to create darts to pick up any excess fabric. Put in a tailor tack at the dart point and pin down. Marking with tailors chalk is helpful.

Step 5.

Cut around the neck so it lays flat. The cuts go towards the neckline, these are vertical cuts if your dummy is standing upright.

Step 6.

Make a mark at the crotch area just before it starts to turn under.

Step 7.

Now repeat for the back. Add in any darts if you have excess fabric at the waist or shoulder area. Cut the neck so it lays flat. Not too close to the neckline though.

Make sure you fold over about 4 – 6 inches on the back before pinning down. This excess will be used to make the legs and crotch.

Step 8.

Make a line at the start of the crotch area on the back.

Step 9.

Pin the back and the front together at side seams and shoulder area.Mark on both sides with tailors chalk where the pins are. This will be your side seams.

I found it helpful to add tailor tacks at key points like neck/shoulder point.Shoulder corner, waist line and bottom the legs. This will help match up the back and front when you sew it together.

Step 10.

Wrap the front and back leg fabric around and pin the meet each other onthe inside of the leg. Just at the bottom is ok. Mark on the front and back where they meet.

Before removing the fabric from the Sew Sister, ensure you have a chalk mark down the centre front and centre back fold and at the front and back crotch.

Step 11.

Cut away the excess fabric, leave about 1cm seam allowance and then using your chalk likes, create a crotch shape the looks like the above images.

The front crotch (on the right) is shorter and the back crotch (left image) is deeper. If you have stretch fabric it doesn’t have to be perfect. If you are struggling, copy the shape from a pair of leggings.

Step 12.

Duplicate both the front and back pieces. If your fabric has a definite right side and wrong side, make sure you flip the pattern piece over.

(right sides together).

Step 13.

Time to join them all together!

1. Sew centre front seams together.2. Sew centre back seams together. Leave an generous opening at the

top so you can slip it over your Sew Sister!3. Lay right sides of front and back together and sew from the neck to

shoulder, pivot, sew down the side seams to the bottom of the leg.4. Repeat for the other side.5. Join the inside legs by sewing from the bottom of one leg towards

the crotch, pivot and continue sewing down the other leg.

Step 14.

Turn up a 15mm hem on each leg to thread elastic through. Sew close to the edge and leave a small gap to thread elastic inside.

Step 15.

Using a safety pin or elastic tool thread a generous amount of elastic through each casing. No need to tie it until you have it on your model.

Turn it inside out.

Step 19.

To get a good shape for the neck topper, put a piece of foil over the pin cushion and crease at the edges.

Page 22: The Quick and Easy way Sew Sister Cover! - BizzTools

Step 20.

Cut this shape out and use it as a template to cut the fabric piece.

Page 23: The Quick and Easy way Sew Sister Cover! - BizzTools

Step 21.

Using a piece of fabric 3” x 10”, wrap it around the neck and pin where the ends meet.

Use chalk to mark the top edge of the pin cushion, the bottom edge of neckline and the back where the fabric meets.
