International Day of YogaInternational Day of Yoga

Prime Minister Narendra

Modi lau nched 2nd

International Yoga Day

celebrations in Chandigarh on

21-June.

PM Modi addressed thousands

of people gathered for asanas at

Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex.

Over 30, 000 people, including

100 differently-abled children,

participated in the event, which

began at 6.30am. The theme of

this year’s event is to ‘Connect

the Youth’.

Here are the highlights from

the PM’s address on Yoga Day:

Yoga talks about what you will get in this life. It is not a science of afterlife. This is a day linked with good health and now it has become a people’s mass movement.

The way mobile phone has become a part of life, you can make yoga a part of your life too

The UN is celebrating International Yoga Day all over the world. It was started last year on India’s request. This day was picked as it is the longest day and the Earth is closest to the Sun

Yoga is not about what one will get, it is about what one can give up

With zero budget, yoga provides health assurance. Yoga does not discriminate between rich and poor

Let’s make yoga more popular globally. Let India produce good yoga teachers

Let’s focus on one thing in the coming days, how to mitigate diabetes through yoga. Diabetes can surely be controlled through yoga Prime Minister Modi ji announced 2 awards. Next year, on this day

these awards will be given on behalf of India:

(a) Best contribution to yoga internationally

(b) (b) Best contribution to yoga within India Source: Official Twitter Account of Press Information Bureau (www.twitter.com/PIB_India)

Treatment with modern medicine and Ayurveda will now be possible

under one roof. The Centre for Integrative Medicine and Research will be

inaugurated in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New

Delhi on June 22 by health minister JP Nadda. The centre is spread over

four thousand square feet on the seventh storey of the ten-storey Conver-

gence block at AIIMS.

The centre aims at doing rigorous scientific research to compare alterna-

tive forms of medicine and their effects on health as compared to modern

medicine. "At this point, there are many claims of benefits of Ayurveda on

health. The centre will pursue hard scientific evidence to understand

safety and efficacy of alternative therapy drugs and Yoga," said a profes-

sor of Cardiology at AIIMS.

The centre is divided into two parts – a gargantuan Yoga studio with

wooden flooring and an Ayurveda and Naturopathy therapy centre.

Doctors from modern medicine and alternative medicine fields like Ay-

urveda do not see eye to eye. This is set to change with different streams

of medicine being integrated under one umbrella at the centre. Integra-

tion will help patients seek safe treatment and ensure it does not have a

conflicting effect on their health, due to wrongful cross-prescription.

Most ayurvedic medicines are available over the counter leading to their

abuse and regulations are not stringent to control their use.

"It is planned to be an ideal system of hospital setting where modern

medicine will be supplemented with Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Unani and

Yoga. While modern medicine is great in tackling emergency situations

and deadly bacterial infections, alternative therapies are said to be effec-

tive in chronic conditions. These points will be studied at the centre,

while patients will be able to avail of alternative therapies in a depend-

able set-up," said Dr Chandrakant Pandav, Head, Centre for Community

Medicine, AIIMS.

"All departments of modern medicine will be encouraged to participate

in comparative research at the centre. Infertility in women due to stress

is a major issue we are looking at taking up. Also rehabilitation of pa-

tients who have suffered from a stroke or a heart attack will be studied in

the centre. Apart from this therapy of patients with respiratory illnesses

including asthma will be addressed," said Dr MC Mishra, director, AIIMS.

Yoga like modern medicine too, if practiced mindlessly or overdone can

lead to fatal side effects, warn experts. Therefore, a need for a scientific

centre was felt. only.

INDIA & WHO SIGN PACINDIA & WHO SIGN PACT T -- GLOBAL PROMOTION OF TRADITIONAL SYSTEMS OF MEDICINE...GLOBAL PROMOTION OF TRADITIONAL SYSTEMS OF MEDICINE...

PREFATORY OBSERVATIONS

Traditional Medicinal (TM) knowledge is indigenous to different cultures. It is the sum total of knowledge, skills and

practices based on the theories, beliefs and experiences across the globe, used in the maintenance of health, and

improvement of treatment of physical and mental illness. Therefore, TM has either been the centerpiece of health care

delivery or has accompanied it.

Complementary Medicines (CM) on the other hand refer to healing practices and products that work in conjunction with

traditional medicines. Within the United Nations (UN) framework, World Health Organization (WHO) is the directing and

coordinating authority for international public health. WHO provides leadership on global health matters; enables

shaping of the health research agenda; setting up of norms and standards; articulating evidence-based policy options;

providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health situation and trends.

WHO intends to boost the TM and CM methods into health care systems across the globe by achieving the following key

goals:

1. Supporting the member states in harnessing the potential contribution of TM and CM to health, wellness and people

eccentric healthcare;

2. Effective use of TM and CM through the regulation of products, practices and practitioners.

These goals are achieved by implementing three strategic objectives:

1. Building the knowledge base and formulating national policies;

2. Strengthening safety, quality and effectiveness through regulation; and

3. Promoting universal health coverage by integrating TM and CM services, and self-health care into national health

systems.

India has always been known for its TM systems, which are well documented in the ancient Vedas and other scriptures as

well. The concept of Ayurveda developed between 2500 B.C. - 500 B.C. Presently, India is the largest producer of

medicinal plants with over 1.5 million practitioners using TM systems in India of which 2,50,000 are registered

Ayurvedic system medical practitioners. However, a large number of countries still cannot afford the most basic medical

procedures, drugs and vaccines.

KEY OBJECTIVES

To support WHO in the development and implementation of the WHO Traditional and Complementary Medicine

Strategy: 2014-2023;

To globally promote traditional Indian systems of medicine;

To deliver the WHO benchmark for training in Yoga, practice in Ayurveda, Unani Medicine and Panchakarma;

To establish a regulatory framework for TM and further take appropriate steps to strengthen the national capacities

ensuring the quality, safety and effectiveness of TM.

In addition to above mentioned key objectives, this landmark collaboration seeks to further strengthen India’s position in

becoming a leader in the global health. It is further expected that this collaboration shall enable:

Development of the WHO publication on the basic terminologies for TM & CM;

Establishment of a database for global TM & CM practitioners;

Establishing a network of international regulatory cooperation for TM & CM practices, “for preserving, protecting

and promoting the bio-resources, traditional medicine and folklore knowledge related with these systems.”; and

The inclusion of Ayurveda and Unani in the International Classification of Diseases and International Classification of

Health interventions.
