The snow has left and the roadside flowers are starting to bloom. The bad news is the trash left over from winter is also coming out, BUT, there is not near as much as there used to be. Soon there will be less as the people and groups who have adopted a road start their spring cleanup. The Lions club will be cleaning their portion on Tuesday May 10. We will meet at the Dock at 1pm or wherever we can on 1 V2 Mile Road if construction is underway. Thanks to the many people who stop and pick up trash on their own even if they haven't officially adopted a road, your efforts make our Island a better place to live, if that is possible.

At our last breakfast we saw many islanders who had been away for the winter returning. While happy to see them we are also saddened that at least one Lions Club member won't be retumlng. Lion Larry Schrader passed away while in Florida. Not surprisingly Larry left us while helping out at a community event Larry was a good friend and enjoyed life. He never seemed to be looking for problems, only solutions. It's nice to think he is reunited with his two wives, again not a problem just another solution for Larry to work on.

Work is underway for our annual walleye tournament which will be held on June 12th. It will be similar to the previous events. Set aside the date for a fun day with the chance to win some great prizes. We guarantee It will be dryer than last year simply because it could not get any wetter.

LIONS DEN Continued . . .

Winners of our monthly raffle were Jennifer McLeod, Marljo Gardnere and Bonnie Swadling. Each were rewarded with a $50 prize. The 50-50 winner was Jessie Knoll. Tickets are being printed for next year's raffle which will start in September. Make sure to get yours early as only 175 are sold.

Our only Lion tuming older this month is Bob Beaumont. Bob says he doesn't even keep track of birthdays anymore but of course it is hard to count that high. Make sure you wish him the best.

FIRE PLUGS Little Rapids Restoration Project Spring is often considered a season of new arrivals with the birth of animal babies and birds. For the fire department it's the time of year when many of our birds leave the nest, at least for awhile. We have a close association with the LSSU Fire Science program with many of our firefighters and EMTs attending school there. As such, several will be gone for at least part of the sumirier doing whatever students do during the summer (I remember spending a lot of time studying for the next year). We will be losing at least one for good as Dan Reck has graduated and will be returning to his home town of Kalamazoo where he will be working for the Public Safety Department. Dan has been a good EMT and firefighter and will always be remembered for catching the cat at one fire. But we know he will be replaced by someone just as skilled, but perhaps not as good a cat catcher. We have the brush truck set up for the coming fire season, but of course hope we do not have to use it.. When burning, after checking with the DNR, have a rake and shovel handy and a water source even i f only a bucket. Also never leave a fire unattended and i f it does seem to be getting away on you call 911 as soon as possible. I f not needed we can always turn around. We also hope to be adding a new truck to our fleet soon. Well at least it will be new to us. Our Chief Dave Pine has located a replacement tanker for our old one that has served us well for many years. Purchase of the new truck seems to be on track pending a trip to look it over by Dave and our mechanic Ron Throener. Hope to have this on board soon.

Jim Handziak, Sugar Island Fire Dept.

With the weather getting nicer and frost laws being lifted on the roads, construction season Is upon us. The Little Rapids Restoration project is starting to gear up for the construction season as well. Residents may have already seen some construction signs and barrels being placed near the site in preparation for the start of construction, which is expected near the beginning of May. The first task to be completed is the installation of a turbidity curtain. The turbidity curtain is placed in the water surrounding the construction area and is used to contain sediment and debris that may be disturbed, within the construction area. Once the turbidity curtain has been installed, along with other soil erosion control measures, the contractor will begin the construction of the temporary access road, which will be used by the public during construction. The Chippewa County Road Commission (CCRC), contractor and entire project team would like to remind drivers to slow down and use extra caution while driving through the construction zone.

As mentioned last month, the project team will be having a ground breaking ceremony sometime in May. Information regarding the date and details will be advertised once the program has been solidified.

We are looking forward to a safe and productive season. If you should have any questions or concerns during the project, please contact the C C R C at 906-635-5295.

Sugar Island Township News

As I write the township letter, it is again snowing, we know Spring is trying to make it back to Sugar Island, but only in short bursts of warmth and sunshine. Please, Mother Nature, make up your mind.

There is one item on the ballot for the May S*** Election, please read the ballot information posted here in regarding this request for an additional 1 mill to your tax bill.

Dave Pine, Fire Chief provided his quarterly report telling us the Fire Department had one structure fire, 1 auto accident response, and one request for help fi-om the School Bus which was caught on a low hanging phone line. We have two volunteers in training who will graduate sometime this spring.

Dave Pine also presented information about a "New" Used Tanker truck he would like to purchase for our Fire Department He and another member of the Fire Dept will be checking out this vehicle sometime in May. Jan Bailey, Ambulance Corp. Captain, was unable to attend, but mention we will be losing Daniel Reck as an EMT, he is graduating from LSSU, and will be taking a job around the Grand Rapids area. We wish him well and thank him for his dedication to our residents while he was here.

We are always looking for additional people to help with our Fire and Ambulance corps, i f you know someone, please have them get in touch with Dave Pine or Jan Bailey.

Lynda A. Garlitz, Clerk

Announcing the 2nd Annual Leopold Festival and Grand Opening of the North Huron Birding Trail Les Cheneaux Islands Region May 13-15,2016 www.lescheneaux.org

Poor land may be rich country, and vice versa..!know, for example, a certain lakeshore, a cool austerity ofpines and wave-washed sands. All day you see it only as something for the surf to pound, a dark ribbon that stretches farther than you can paddle, a monotony to mark the miles by. But toward sunset some vagrant breeze may waft a gull across a headland, behind which a sudden roistering of loons reveals the presence of a hidden bay. You are seized with an impulse to land, to set foot on bearberry carpets, to pluck balsam bed, to pilfer beach plums or blueberries, or perhaps to poach a partridge from out those bosky quietudes that lie behind the dimes...

-Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac

Last year we came together in celebration of Aldo Leopold's legacy in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The months Leopold spent with his family each year on Marquette Island in the Les Cheneaux area inspired his influential essays on laiwi ethics, naturalism and responsible ways of participating in the living ecosystems around us. This year we invite locals and visitors of all ages to join us in sharing and celebrating the mystery of these northem shores and woodlands as we dedicate the new North Huron Birding Trail. Continuing from biixling trails along the lower peninsula's Lake Huron shore, the North Huron Birding Trail is a 150-mile trail stretching from the Straits of Mackinac to the central region of the eastem Upper Peninsula. Special birding opportunities along this trail include abundant shoreline species, large populations of migratory and breeding warblers and other songbirds, rare gi^sland gems such as the state's highest population of Sharp-tailed Grouse, and overall exceptional winter birding. Many partners have worked together for the ofBcial launch of this trail at the Leopold Festival, and we hope you will enjoy exploring this area of critical resting and staging areas for a rich variety of migratory birds and waterfowl.

Other weekend activities include guided birding trips and wildflower walks, a kayak-bike-run triathlon, bird house workshops, raptor presentations and miles of open hiking throughout our scenic nature preserves. Learn more about Northem Michigan's natural history at this year's featured presentations: >^ 'TSfative Orchids of the Eastem U.P." - Learn how to find and identify over forty species of wild orchids native to the Eastem U.P. in this program led by Dr. Steven Baker. >^ "Beautifiil Birds of the Eastem U.P." - Don't miss this phenomenal photographic display by local professional photographer, Mr. Paul Rossi.

S u g a r I s l a n d C h e s s K l u b FIND THE MOVE—What is/are BLACK'S best move(s)? (Theme: Mating Attack)

g

KING (KHnoves one square in any direction QUEEN (Q)-moves any number of squares in any

direction (on rows/ranks, columns/files, or diagonals) S /S ROOK (R)—moves any number of squares sideways, forward, or backward (on ranks and files, not diagonals) A/A BISHOP (B)—moves any number of squares on diagonals 2^/^ KNIGHT (N)—moves in an "L" shape (2 squares

one way and 1 the other) to a square of the opposite color. Knights are the only pieces that can jump over others.

PAWN—moves straight forward (cannot back up) 1 or 2 squares on the first move and then only 1 at a time. A pawn can capture only on the diagonal squares immediately in front of it. Pawns reaching the S" rank become a Q (or R, B or N). • Pieces CAPTURE ("X") by mnning into and displacing

others. • A king is in CHECK ("+') when it is attacked. • CHECKMATE occurs when a player cannot save the

king from capture. WHITE STARTED AT THE BOTTOM AND BLACK AT

THE TOP

ANSWER: Black wins the game in 3 moves. Black first moves the baIck Queen (Q) to the h4-square, attacking white's King (K). White must save the K and can only do so by moving the g2-pawn to g3. The black bishop (B) or Q then captures the g3-pawn with check. To save the K, white must capture the B or Q with the h2-pawn. Then the remaining piece (Q or B) takes the pawn for mate. [1...Qh4+ 2.g3 Bxg3 3.Qxg3 mate]
