CONFERENCE OVERVIEW
In the healthcare industry, change is imminent and
unavoidable. Hospices must face the challenge of
constant change in order to pursue excellence. The 2019
KAHPC conference will address much of the change we
see today in the industry. The conference will cover a full
range of engaging topics and speakers. The goal of the
conference is to provide insight and tools to help
attendees keep pace with what is going on in and around
the industry.
Cherry Meier will open the conference this year. Cherry is
known in the hospice community for her work in the
advancement of hospice in the long-term care setting.
She has worked with the National Hospice and Palliative
Care Organization (NHPCO) as Long-Term Care
Manager and was responsible for providing operational
guidance for the integration of hospice into the nursing
home.
Judi Lund-Person will be our Thursday afternoon plenary
speaker. Judy will present “A View from Washington”.
Judi is the Vice President of Regulatory and Compliance
for NHPCO. Judi will share with us the latest and greatest
from the regulatory front.
Throughout the day on Thursday, attendees will be able
to engage with colleagues to learn from topics covering
clinical, management/regulatory, psychosocial/spiritual,
palliative care, and a 5th track on volunteers.
Friday morning the conference will open at 8am with
breakout sessions in various tracks. Our Friday morning
plenary speaker will be Tom Gualtieri-Reed. Tom has
presented extensively on a range of palliative care
business planning and program development topics at
national and regional conferences and has co-authored
several publications on payer-provider partnerships.
Dr. Lynn McPherson will be our Friday closing plenary
speaker. Dr. McPherson has maintained a practice in
both hospice (local and national) and ambulatory care her
entire career. Dr. McPherson teaches extensively in the
Doctor of Pharmacy program at the University of
Maryland School of Pharmacy in Baltimore on pain
management and end of life care, including didactic and
experiential content.
Judi Lund-Person, BA, MPH, CHC is the Vice President, of Regulatory and Compliance for the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Judi serves as a key contact with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, interfacing with hospice payment policy, Part D, survey and certification, contractor management, and program integrity functions, among others. She also represents hospice and palliative care with the Medicare Administrative Contractors and other federal agencies and many national organizations. Recent issues include advocating for changes in the Notice of Election filing and payment process, advocating for new guidance regarding Part D and hospice, and ongoing work with the Medicare Administrative Contractors on hospice payment policy issues. She works daily with hospice providers and state hospice organizations on the ever-increasing array of regulatory and compliance issues and translates complex regulatory language into actionable “plain English” for hospice providers. She works with her team at NHPCO to develop regulatory and compliance tools for hospice providers each year, including hospice payment rates and wage index values and compliance guides to assist providers in achieving compliance with various federal rules and regulations.
Tom Gualtieri-Reed, MBA is a partner with Spragens & Gualtieri-Reed. He has more than 25 years of experience in the health care field, working in business operations, strategic development, and analytics, and has done extensive work with both provider and payer organizations. Mr. Gualtieri-Reed works directly with hospitals, physicians, and health care organizations to develop and implement strategic and business plans, including care delivery redesign, population health, and palliative care programs designed to improve the effective delivery of care. In 2018 Mr. Gualtieri-Reed served as facilitator for the National Consensus Project (NCP) Stakeholder Strategic Directions Summit to develop the 4th edition of the NCP Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care. He has a specific interest in addressing the needs of the aging population and those with serious illness. Previously, Mr. Gualtieri-Reed held leadership positions at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, Duke University Health System, Kaiser Permanente of North Carolina, and the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Mr. Gualtieri-Reed earned his MBA from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business and his BA in economics from the College of the Holy Cross. Mr. Gualtieri-Reed has presented extensively on a range of palliative care business planning and program development topics at national and regional conferences and has co-authored several publications on payer-provider partnerships.
Mary Lynn McPherson, PharmD, MA, MDE, BCPS, CPE is Professor and Executive Director, Advanced Post-Graduate Education in Palliative Care, and Vice Chair, Teaching Development and Enhancement in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in Baltimore. Dr. McPherson has maintained a practice in both hospice (local and national) and ambulatory care her entire career. Dr. McPherson teaches extensively in the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum on pain management and end of life care, including didactic and experiential content. She has created and serves as the Executive Director of the Online Master of Science and Graduate Certificate Program in Palliative Care through the University of Maryland Baltimore. She has authored five books including the very popular “Demystifying Opioid Conversion Calculations: A Guide to Effective Dosing.”
Cherry Meier, RN, MSN, LNHA has a master's degree in nursing from Texas Women's University and licensed as a nursing home administrator in Texas. She has been working in hospice since the passage of the Hospice Benefit in 1982 and employed by VITAS since 1989 in various roles. Her current title is Vice President of Nursing Facility Partnerships. Cherry is known in the hospice community for her work in the advancement of hospice in the long-term care setting. She worked with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization as Long Term Care Manager and was responsible for providing operational guidance for the integration of hospice into the nursing home. She has worked with nursing home associations and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as language was developed for the partnership. Cherry also participated on the expert panel in developing the Minimum Data 3.0 version.

Palmetto GBA is pleased to announce our 2019 Hospice Workshop Series, Tools for Medicare Success. These workshops are designed for hospice providers and their staff to equip them with the tools they need to be successful with Medicare billing, coverage and documentation requirements.
These workshops will provide insight for hospice agency staff at all levels; however, we suggest that providers who are new to Medicare or have new staff attend online learning courses for beginners offered at www.PalmettoGBA.com/hhh.
