The Purposes of a Sports Journalist

The Advetisor

• To make people aware of events, to get the masses out.

• Specially important for local/beat reporters– News Enterprise, Courier-Journal, etc.

– Sports Journalist are cheap advertising for people in the community.

The Psychologist

• To figure out what sports celebrities/athletes are thinking.

• The motivations for bad decisions, trades, game choices, etc– The Decision with Lebron• Look at all the analysis about the decision Lebron

made, and why he made it.

The Detective

• To investigate controversies, illegal activities, etc.

• The sports journalist is a real journalist, they have a duty to find and report things that aren’t suppose to be going on.– HGH Scandal in MLB Sex Abuse in USA – Doping in Track and Field Swimming

The Pastor/Priest

• To express an opinion about the moral compass sports are heading in.

• To show why something is good or bad.• To show how something can damage the

integrity of the game

• BCS—every journalist has an opinion on this

The Scorekeeper

• To tell a reader/audience what happened in a game they weren’t able to watch/attend

• To keep the stats, and show us which stats made the difference in the game

• The roundup, ESPN News, etc.
