The Publication of June 2012 The Stanislaus County Bar Association http://WWW.STANBAR.ORG By Marlisa A. Ferreira Well, here it is almost half a year into my 2012 term as Bar Association President and what a year it has been. We have had numerous events, MCLE programs and activities and many more on the horizon that each respective committee is putting together and scheduling; around the corner and in the future. I want to especially thank last years’ President, Peter Stavrianoudakis, and our Ex Officio, Judy Jensen, for all their hard work and dedication. As SCBA Members, that attend all of our functions and pay your annual dues, your support of the Bar Association allows us to continue to put on such wonderful, educational, memorable and fun events. If you have not renewed your 2012 SCBA Membership, you can now go to our website at STANBAR.ORG and register on-line! No envelopes, no postage easy as typing and the click of a mouse! We have also recently implemented our MCLE Programs to register on-line. Again, please check it out and see for yourself how simple it is and tell a friend or colleague. Back in February we had the 2012 SCBA Installation of Officers and Directors, at the Martin Petersen Center. It was a free event in which Bar Association hosted drinks, finger foods, and even some live entertainment. We had a great turn out and I would like to thank the Honorable Ricardo Cordova for heading the Installation Ceremony that evening, for us. Well, here it is almost half a year into my 2012 term as Bar Association President and

what a year it has been. We have had numerous events, MCLE programs and activities and

many more on the horizon that each respective committee is putting together and scheduling;

around the corner and in the future.

I want to especially thank last years’ President, Peter Stavrianoudakis, and our Ex

Officio, Judy Jensen, for all their hard work and dedication.

As SCBA Members, that attend all of our functions and pay your annual dues, your support of the Bar

Association allows us to continue to put on such wonderful, educational, memorable and fun events.

and register on-line! No envelopes, no postage – easy as typing and the click of a mouse! We have also recently

implemented our MCLE Programs to register on-line. Again, please check it out and see for yourself how simple it

On May 4, 2012, we had a fabulous 54th Annual Law Day Luncheon at The Gallo Center for the Arts and our keynote speaker was Justice William Murray of the 3rd DCA. Justice Murray tackled a tough subject in his Law Day address – this year’s theme was, “No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom”. Justice Murray did a terrific job and the food, catered by Galletto’s, was delicious. Patty Stone received the 2012 Liberty Bell Award and the SCBA presented two students with a $500 Scholarship award – Donovan Sousa from Enochs High School and Vanessa Trujillo of Denair High. We wish them all the best of luck and a huge congrats! Most recently, we had our 25th Anniversary Golf Tournament on June 2, 2012 at Dryden Park Golf Course. I would like to especially thank Keric Cushing, Deana Skelton and the SCLPA for their hard work and dedication in putting together a festive and successful event. In 1985, the Honorable Hurl Johnson founded the first Golf Tournament. In recognition of his dedication to this enjoyable long-lasting event, the Bar Association presented him with a commemorative plaque.

Additionally, Larry Beaver was recognized for all of his hard work in organizing so many of the tournaments

throughout the years. Thank you Judge Johnson and Larry Beaver! I leave you with this thought, it is summer now and we know how busy and unavailable we all become at this time of year – but please do not forget to support your local Bar Association. We truly appreciate each of you and all that you give. Have a wonderful summer!

The Bar Association presented the well-deserving Patty Stone with the coveted

Liberty Bell Award at our 54th Annual Law Day Luncheon on May 4th at The Gallo

Center for the Arts. The Honorable Hugh Rose spoke about Patty before she was

given her plaque and she told everyone of her funny story at her first job in a

bank that was robbed! We are so thoroughly de-

lighted to have bestowed this prestigious award to

such a truly inspiring and giving person.

“Congratulations Patty!”

2012 SBCA SCHOLARSHIP

AWARD RECIPIENTS

At the 54th Annual Law Day Luncheon on May 4th at The Gallo Center for the Arts, the Bar Association presented two $500 Scholarship Awards as well. The two very hard-working students that plan to go on and enter into the legal field for their careers, are Donovan Sousa of James Enochs High School and Vanessa Trujillo of Denair High School. Both of these bright young people will go far and advance in whatever they do, so please join us in congratulating them both on a job well done.

A Big Congratulations to Donnie and Vanessa!!

SCBA DONATES $500 TO

‘THE OTHER BAR’ AT

LAW DAY LUNCHEON

The Stanislaus County Bar Association is pleased to announce that it has chosen to acknowledge its

appreciation of the The Other Bar by making a $500.00 donation to help fund that organization’s

valuable work. The Other Bar is a non-profit, statewide organization of lawyers, judges, paralegals and

law students in recovery. The organization’s sole purpose and function is to provide assistance and

support to those in the legal profession who are struggling with addiction to alcohol or other

substances. Participation is entirely voluntary, and services are free of charge and provided in

complete confidentiality.

The Other Bar conducts educational outreach in the form of MCLE’s on the topic of substance abuse in

the legal profession; runs a 24-hour consultation hotline; maintains a website, otherbar.org; and

conducts recovery group meetings in 32 cities weekly across the state of California. The organization

depends for its financial support entirely on tax-deductible contributions from those in the profession.

We invite local bar associations, law firms, and specialty practice groups to join us in supporting this

vital work by making a contribution in an amount appropriate for the size and financial resources of

your group. Individual contributions are also welcome. Donations can be made through the website.

The Other Bar has a proven track record of saving lives and careers, and is chronically underfunded.

Please accept our challenge to join us in supporting their mission!

ATTORNEY TIMOTHY T. FLYNN OF MODESTO

Timothy Flynn received the Legion of Merit Medal at a recent retirement

ceremony after 36 years of service in the U.S. Navy Reserve. A Captain in

the Judge Advocate General’s Corps, he served 6 years in the enlisted

Storekeeper rating and 30 years as a commissioned officer in the Navy’s

legal corps. The award acknowledges exceptional meritorious conduct in

performance of outstanding service. Mr. Flynn practices with Brunn & Flynn

in Modesto in civil, business and estate planning matters.

Congratulations Tim!

It was a

super nice Satur-

day and the wind

blew just enough

to keep everyone cooled off (and all of

the volunteers scrambling to keep the

raffle tickets ‘inside’ the raffle bags!).

The Dryden golf course was in

great condition – they were preparing

for a huge tournament the following

weekend, so we reaped the benefits.

Judge Hurl Johnson made the trek

out for the what is considered to be his

‘25th’ time to tee off. We know that there

was no tournament in 2009 but records

do not go back to 198(5?), so we are

sticking with the fact that this was our

25th Anniversary Tournament and so the

Bar Association sought it fitting to recog-

nize the original founder, Judge Johnson.

After 18 holes, many beers, some

socializing along the way, a belly full of

Dryden’s terrific BBQ’ed tri-tip sandwich-

es, and raffle prizes doled out to a lot of

lucky winners (Jeff Mangar must have

rigged it so he would win all the wine!) –

the Golf Chairperson, Keric J. Cushing,

presented Judge Johnson with an en-

graved trophy for all his hard work

and dedication towards all our past golf

tournaments and creating a FUN way to

get outside and exercise, say hello to

fellow legal pals you’ve not seen in a SCBA Member…10% Discount!

while and simply enjoying the day!

Larry Beaver was also given a

trophy for all his contributions to our golf

tourneys. THANK YOU Hurl & Larry!!
