' Others have laboured, and we enter into their labours."

T H E copper currency of this country, towards the end of the eighteenth century, wasin such a neglected condition, by reason of the meagre supply, and the veryinferior quality of the design, that tons of imitation regal halfpence and farthingswere in circulation. Such being th e state of things, it is no wonder that when theProvincial Token Coinage made i ts appearance, with th e issue of the Pennies and Half-pence of the Parys Mines Company (of Anglesey) an d others, many persons madecollections of the novel specimens. Th e law of supply and demand, and vice versa, makesitself felt under a ll conditions. So long as the tokens were of good weight, and thesupply was not in excess of the need fo r small change, tbe issue was advantageous tothe public ; but when the supply exceeded the demand, and the quality had materiallydeterioratednot to mention th e number of counterfeits which got into circulationthey ceased to serve their purpose, and were superseded by the issue of t he copper Two-penny and One Penny pieces of 1797.

T he following list of publications, mostly contemporaneous with the issue of thetokens, will be of interest:

Thomas Spence, of No. 8, Little Turnstile, High Holborn, London, in 1795,published " The Coin Collector's Companion, being a descriptive alphabetical list of theModern Provincial Political and other Copper Coins." There are 50 pp. and an Addenda. Some copies have a " Supplement" of vi. pp.

Christopher Williams published " A Descriptive List of the Provincial CopperCoins, including those of London, MDCCXCV. Price Sixpence." 30 pp.

Another" T he Virtuoso's Guide in Collecting Provincial Copper Coins, being acopious and perfect description of all that are now extant. London : Printed by, andfor J . Hammond, No. 12, St. Martin's Lane, and sold by Jones, No. 17, Butcher Row,and Denton, Hospital Gate, Smithfield. MDCCXCV." 45 pp. and Addendadescribes428 specimens.

I n a notice " To the Public," the author refers to " Two Publications which beara similarity to this," which have been published, and to the inaccuracies in such. This israther amusing, seeing that he printed th e Descriptive List by Christopher Williams. H efurther continues" It is to be lamented, that there are some persons w ho have beenstimulated by the hopes of gain, to have several Dies made, and by striking the reverseof one Die with the obverse of another, and vice versa, they have produced a great number

of different Coins, which are vulgarly called 'Bastards,' and are in general esteemedunworthy a place in the Collections of the Curious." T h e author refrains from describingthe "Bas ta rds" or "Mules."

A more extensive work i s "A Descriptive List of the Provincial Copper Coins orTokens issued between the Years 1786 and 1796, arranged alphabetically, by SamuelBirchall, of Leeds. From th e originals in his own Possession." This title-page is animpression from a copper plate, and has an illustration of the obverse and reverse of hisPrivate Token ; also" Leed s: Printed for 8 . Birchall, and sold by Henry Young,Ludgate Street, London. 1796." There is also a title-page in letterpress"An Alpha-betical List of Provincial Copper-Coins or Tokens, issued between th e years 1786 and1796. Leeds: Printed by Thomas Gill, 1796."

There is a notice " To the Collectors of Provincial Coins," in which reference ismade to the innumerable errors which have crept into the previous publications. T he namesof thirteen Collectors are given, who have contributed information as to specimens whichappear in the Appendix, having an additional number in small figures, corresponding withthe number opposite the name.

" The Virtuoso's Companion and Coin Collector's Guide. London : Published forthe Proprietor, by M. Denton, Hospita l Gate, West Smithfield, 1795." Some copies havevol. 1dated 1797, though the plates a re dated 1795, &c. Th e Preface informs th e readerthat four hundred and eighty different coins will be illustrated, in four volumes, fortwenty shillings.

Early copies have some pages erroneously numbered, viz., pp. 195 and 198, eachof which are repeated, pp. 199 and 201 being omitted; but the engravings are not induplicate, and agree with those in a copy (evidently a later issue, the illustrations notbeing so sharp) where th e paging is continuous. In this, the page having th e Gloucesterand Berkley Canal token, is numbered 201 ; and that having a view of a churchSt.Catherine's, Coleman Streetis 199. This erroneous pagina tion h as been the cause ofsome copies being described as imperfect or incomplete.

James Wright, Junr., Esq . , F.A.S.S., wrote an interesting article, headed " Observa-tions on Coins," referring to the several types of design as represented on the tokens,&c. After th e four volumes had appeared, there still remained such a number ofspecimens not illustrated, that it was decided to continue the publication, hence it wasextended to eight volumes; T. Prattent, of 46, Cloth Fair, being responsible for itduring the publishing of vols. 7 and 8. Th e work appeared a t intervals of from ten tofourteen days, in paper covers, price sixpence ; twelve coins, on three plates, constituting anumber. A frontispiece appeared with vol. 1, and at the end of vols. 4 and 8 an Index, but no explanatory or descriptive letterpress. This work, and also th e octavo edition byC. Pye, are gradually becoming scarcer, many having been cut up to illustrate books ofletterpress only.

Charles Pye, engraver, of Birmingham, published by subscription h is octavo work, having an engraved title-page : " Provincial Copper Coins or Tokens, issued between theyears 1787 and 1796. Engraved by Charles Pye , of Birmingham, from the originals inhis own Possession." Below is a figure of a female seated under the shade of a tree

contemplating th e portrait of George I I I . , which she supports with h er right hand. I nthe "Advertisement," dated "Birmingham, Sept. 1, 1795," the author refers to "produc-tions n o t being intended fo r circulation ; many of them so infamously base, that, in myopinion, they are a disgrace to t he age we live in, and such as I don't think proper toadmit into m y collection." He published the work in twelve numbers, three plates ineach, a t lialf-a-crown per number; a few proofs on large paper, a t five shillings pernumber. T he Index contains, as far as he was able, th e names of the Die-sinkers.

This w as succeeded by a quarto edition in 1801, with 55 plates ; an Index givingthe names of Die-sinkers, Manufacturers, Proprietors, Quantities issued, and Observations ;a two-page Advertisement, in which lie describes the lines adopted in arranging theengravings, &c. A second edition w as published by Matthew Young, about th e year 1834.

James Conder, of Ipswich, published " An Arrangement of Provincial Coins, Tokensand Medalets, issued in Great Britain, Ireland and the Colonies, within the last twentyyears; from th e farthing to the penny size; in two volumes, octavo, with three plates ofillustrations." There are large paper copies printed on one side only. Some have, at thefoot of title-page" Ipswich : Printed and Sold by George Jermyn . Sold also by T.Conder, No. 30, Bucklersbury, a n d H . Young, No. 10, Tavistock St . , London. 1 7 9 8 " ;others"Ipswich: Printed by George Je rm yn ; sold by Messrs. Cadell and Davies, Strand;Messrs. Rivington, S t . Paul's Churchyard, and T, Conder, Bucklersbury. 1799." Somecopies have an Appendix, finishing a t p . 320 ; others have it continued to p. 333, follow-ing which is " Appendix Second," concluding wi th p . 348. The Index, paged 321-328,shows that the continuation of the first Appendix, an d also th e second Appendix, werecompiled after th e Index w as printed; th e paging of the letterpress following p. 320,and disregarding that of the Index.

With the exception of the privately printed Catalogue of Sir George Chetwynd'sTokens, by Thomas Sharp, Conder's work was the book of reference till th e publicationo f " T h e Tradesmen's Tokens of the Eighteenth Century," by James Atkins. This publica-tion h as been, an d is, of such service to Collectors, that no better evidence as to itsusefulness is possible than th e fact that th e collecting and study of the specimens hasbrought to light such a number of varieties of dies, especially in the Cheshire, Lancashire,Warwickshire and Anglesey series, as to warrant th e publication of a work illustratingand describing all the known varieties.

This will be published in sectionsobviously an advantage to those who limit theircollection to one or more countiesand, as nearly as possible, will follow th e arrange-ment in Atkins' work ; Mules will be described bu t no t illustrated; th e rarity of thevarious pieces will be stated ; the "Building " tokens will form a separate series, bu t willbe also included in the letterpress of other series to conform with Atkins' arrangement.

Thanks are tendered to all who have so willingly helped to make th e publicationso complete ; should others appear, th e owners a re asked to communicate with th e authorswith a view to having them described in an Addenda.

Collectors will find their interest in the subject deepened by a study of the circum-stances which brought about the issue, also by a consideration of the French Revolution, the Birmingham Riots, and their association with Priestley, &c. W . R. Ha y, M.A., Vicar

of Rochdale, the issuer (along with M r. Tomlinson and Mr . W. Orme) of the BuxtonTokens, was the Chairman of the Justices, an d ordered the reading of the Riot Act, onAugust 16th, 1819, on the occasion of the great meeting a t Manchester. T h e PoliticalSeries, although many are "Mules,'' is most interest ing, having reference to manyhistorical events. A visit to the Abbeys, Castles, Cathedrals or Churches, as representedon the specimens, mutually adds to the interest in the structure and the token ; in fact, the more attention is devoted to the subject and appertaining circumstances, the greaterbecomes the intellectual pleasure which a collection will furnish.

Some knowledge of the theory of die-sinking is helpful . Specimens exist from dieswhich have been " lapped" or polished up , after having been used for the order fortokens; these m ay have a brilliant appearance on the "field," but the fine lines will befound to be wanting, and, to the uninitiated, such m a y appear to be from different dies(compare Nos. 5 and 6 Cheshire; Rochdale 89, rev. die ; Wainfleet, Atkins 9 e ; alsoamong th e tokens of Norfolk and Suffolk are some of this class).

Thomas Sharp, in his Introduction to the Catalogue of the Provincial Coins in theCollection of Sir George Chetwynd, Bart ., states that these specimens from polished dies" were eagerly bought by inexperienced Collectors as proofs."

Collectors are cautioned against what are described as "unpublished edges." Ifthe wording is entirely different, they m a y regard it as correctly described; but if onlya " blundered edge," i.e. incorrect by reason of the lettering having been imperfectlyimpressed in the process of " rolling " it on, let it pass.

" PAYABLE IN LONDON, the remainder engrailed."One having this "edge" may beoffered as "unpublished" with a small x added. This would appear on all if not"blundered," and in many instances may be seen partly obliterated.

Charles Pye refers to the Collector who, when he finds it difficult to procure ascarce variety of a coin, by means of filing and chasing a common impression of thesame coin, contrives to patch up an imitation of a rare variety. Unfor tunately, th e evilwhich such men do lives after them, and as a result, an unpublished " Plain edge, incollar, m ay appear. A careful examination m ay show traces of filing, in which instancethe specimen should be regarded as an ordinary one, the edge of which h a s beentampered with; or, an apparently genuine "Plain Edge in Collar" m ay have been producedby " turn ing ' the edge in a lathe; but as such treatment would render th e specimensmaller in diameter than the ordinary ones, a comparison will reveal th e true characterof the piece.

\ e t , a l l things considered, there is less chance of a novice being deceived who hastaken up the collection of tokens, than is the case in many other pursuits ; and, con-sidering th e number of specimens which ma y be obtained for the sum required for amoderately expensive painting, the number of Collectors should be much in excess of whatit is at present, and a true Collector is always willing to instruct a beginner.

Extracts from the " Bazaar Notes " and " The Universal British Directory," andworks previously mentioned, have been used where such would add to the completenessof the description.

Sharp states that of this remarkable piece only o n e other instance is known, being a n indented impres-sion of one of Wilki nson' s busts. Both specimens were obtain ed from t h e artist by Mr . Sharp, a ndpresented by him to the respective cabinets of Sir George Chetwynd a nd t he late M r . Conder. It isobvious that only th e Reverse die of th e intended piece w a s completed, a n d Hancock gave n o informationas to the reasons for i ts being abandoned, or for whom i t was executed. D r . Priestley having, as is wellknown, made himself unpopular a t Birmingham by the part h e took in the intended celebration of theanniversary of the French Revolution a t that town, ha d h i s house attacked by rioters, a nd burnt, togetherwith it s valuable scientific contents A n angry warfare, through th e medium of the press, followed ; andamongst other writers w h o entered th e arena, o n e , whose assumed signature was ' John Nott th e Button-maker," considerably distinguished himself; and it is upon the head of this person that D r . T h e likeness of the Doctor is admirably preserved by Hancock, who , on another occasion, w a s equally happy in giving a striking resemblance o f h i m . Th e workmanshipof this rare token is in the artist's best manner ; and it is to be regretted that th e entire design was notfinished. Thi s, piece is now in the collection of S H Hamer.

As, however, there may be others in cabinets of collectors whohitherto have ignored the edge readings, we have marked these R R , instead of RRR.Later, we may be able to give a complete list of those Tokens where only one ortw o edge readings have been discovered. T h e following pieces have not yet beentraced, but are included on the authority of Atkins' work on Tokens an d also fromnotes that have been supplied by various collectors :

Collectors w ho have any of these pieces, or meet with them a t a later date, will greatly oblige by kindly communicating with us, so that they may be recordedin an Addenda.

I n arranging these tokens, it has been thought advisable to transfer to this sectionthose having reference to Earl Howe, John Howard, Nelson, an d Naval Farthings, and whichappear in Atkins under " N O T L O C A L . "

T h e edge-reading cannot always be taken as a guarantee that the specimen was intendedfo r local currency. By reason of the quantity struck, and the fact that the edge-readingwas "rolled" on the "blanks" previous to such receiving th e impression from the dies, itwill be readily understood that, in some instances, it has no connection with th e design onobverse or reverse.

T h e grouping of tokens on the lines here indicated, will be of material assistance inthe identification of s p e c i m e n s , especially to those with whom th e study is a new pursuit.
