The properties of covalent compounds
L.O:
To understand the properties of simple covalent compounds
What properties do all of these substances have in common?
H2
O2
H2O
CH4
NH3
N2
Cl2
What do you observe when iodine is heated?
Can you explain what happens?
Covalent Compound Properties• Bonding within covalent molecules is strong• Forces between molecules are weak• E.g. iodine has weak intermolecular forces
which are easily overcome – iodine sublimes at 30°C
• Fragrances are another example of covalently bonded molecules
• All simple molecules have relatively low melting points and boiling points
• Simple molecules do not conduct electricity
