The consumer technology industry thrives on change. Tech advances are
transforming businesses and the global economy at an accelerating pace
increasing access to entertainment, education and information for people
worldwide.
CES® is the world’s market for selling and buying change. Each January
top executives come to cut deals, make connections and see the future.
The Consumer Technology Association (CTA)TM owns and produces CES –
the world’s gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer
technologies. And this year we celebrated 50 years of innovation since
CES was founded in 1967.
Energy, passion and a zest for learning about the latest technologies marked
CES 2017 – the largest in show history spanning more than 2.6 million NSF
with 4,000 exhibitors and 180,000 executives from business, government,
entertainment and the automotive industries. A record 600 startups pitched
their business ideas to investors and media in Eureka Park.
JOIN USCTA represents the $292 billion consumer technology industry that supports
more than 15 million U.S. jobs. Our 2,200 member companies – 80 percent are
small businesses and startups; others are among the world’s best known brands
– create these products, services, apps and technologies that solve problems
and make the world better.
CTA’s mission is to grow the industry. We achieve this by providing unique
market research, developing industry standards, working with legislators,
promoting consumer campaigns and hosting CES, CES Asia and other
events to connect attendees with new relationships, revenue and ideas. The
CTA Foundation improves the lives of seniors and people with disabilities
through technology.
Our members cover the technology spectrum. Some business models
are disrupting the status quo in areas like health monitoring, robotics,
implantables, virtual reality, machine learning, self-driving vehicles,
drone deliveries, 3D-printing, and facial and voice-based security.
Innovation is linking unconnected ideas, industries, products and services.
For example, look at how the app-driven sharing economy is altering our
lives. PricewaterhouseCoopers says that by 2025, shared services will
generate $335 billion in worldwide revenues up from $15 billion in 2013.
Artiicial intelligence (AI) is fueling innovation from teaching self-driving cars
to maneuver eiciently to giving robots the ability to understand voice-based
requests. Voice-activated technologies from Amazon Echo to Google Home are
becoming a common operating system for connected objects. And the Internet
of Things will soon provide the data and analysis to make us healthier, safer
and more energy eicient, enhancing our lives in unlimited ways.
But as automation and AI redesign the workplace and disrupt legacy
industries, our country must address challenges such as skill mismatches
and job displacement while continuing to promote innovation. Recognizing
this, CTA’s New American Jobs Summit will help look into the future and
address solutions to these trends. The summit will explore how government
and the private sector can invest in a competitive workforce, create new
high-wage jobs and foster economic growth in the face of rapid technological
innovation, an aging population and increased global competition.
MOVING FORWARDIn Washington, DC, we will continue to focus on issues ranging from privacy
to heath care, encryption to spectrum. The election of President Trump along
with a Republican Congress should be a plus for the economy and business.
Business leaders from tech and other groups meeting with the president have
stressed the need to compete globally. Being in the tech industry means we
respect and adjust to disruption. We will be lexible and continue to support
our members, promote growth and encourage innovation in this changing
economic environment.
Join with us to build a world where technology enriches lives. Only imagination
limits what we can achieve in the future.

CONNECTIVITY AT CES 2017
CES 2017 had a big message: everything
in our industry will be connected. Of the
many announcements across the show,
connectivity could be found in everything
from automotive to artiicial intelligence,
healthcare, smart home hubs, and even the
travel and tourism industry.
Nissan referred to connectivity in the
automobile as “intelligent mobility”, while
Volkswagen and Chrysler debuted a connected
community portal for the vehicle, and a
connected minivan, respectively. During
his keynote, Carnival President and CEO
Arnold W. Donald announced OCEAN –
the One Cruise Experience Access Network,
which consists of an IoT network for the
cruise line, a digital “experience” portal
and even a new connected wearable for
passengers.
Meanwhile, all across the show loor,
connected devices opened themselves
up to smart home hubs such as Amazon’s
Echo and Google Home. CES 2017 featured
80,000 net square feet of smart home
technology. As the U.S. moves towards
5G wireless networks, the race to connect
every device and facet of our lives shows
no signs of abating.
POLICY
To foster the growth of 5G networks and the
Internet of Things, CTA strongly supports
government eforts to free up spectrum for
licensed and unlicensed use. In particular,
CTA advocated for TV broadcast spectrum
to be repurposed through voluntary incentive
auctions. Completed in 2017, they promote
innovation and job creation, reduce the
national debt and amply compensate television
broadcasters that chose to participate. Most
important, incentive auctions helped alleviate
the spectrum crunch so Americans can
enjoy robust wireless broadband capability that
will power the innovation-driven economy.
MARKET RESEARCH
CTA’s comprehensive market research
includes industry sales statistics, forecasts,
economic analysis and consumer research,
including research focused on connectivity.
In early 2017, CTA focused on the role of
connectivity in evolving urban areas, with
The Evolution of Smart Cities and Connected
Communities study. This study reviewed
what U.S. cities are doing and planning to
do to be “smart” or “connected”, as well as the
emerging implications of using “sensorization”
and IoT technologies in communities, cities
and transportation systems.
Other CTA studies examine consumer
behavior with mobile devices. CTA’s Path
to Purchase Using Mobile Devices explores
how mobile devices are used at every stage
of technology product shopping, starting
from product search through inal purchase.
This study seeks to help the industry
understand consumer attitudes towards
shopping online and shopping using
mobile devices to access multichannel
retail stores and online-only retail stores.
THE PROMISE OF TECHNOLOGY22 Consumer Technology Association
Encouraging Transportation Advances
Self-driving vehicles and drones can transform transportation in life-changing ways. CTA is leading the way in revolutionizing how we think about transportation, travel, delivery and recreation. Self-driving cars promise beneits from parking assist to collision avoidance to increased safety with fewer accidents. With consistent advancements in driverless technology, the era of self-driving vehicles is fast approaching.
T H E P R O M I S E O F T E C H N O LO GY22 Consumer Technology Association
2 0 1 7 C TA CO R P O R AT E R E P O RT 23CTA.tech
Drones are also one of the industry’s most exciting
technologies and will be used in new ways to alter how
goods ranging from products, medical supplies and even
food, are transported in the future. Drones are already
being used in disaster relief to reach victims with life-
saving supplies. The technology and policy landscapes of
self-driving vehicles and drones are evolving fast and so
are consumer sentiments about their intentions to adopt.
POLICY
Self-driving cars can reduce more than 90 percent of
accidents caused by human error and help eliminate
hours wasted in traic by reducing congestion. The race
to put these cars on the road is fueled by the desire to
help many people, including those with disabilities and the
elderly. However, automakers are facing regulations that
limit the adoption of this new technology. CTA ights on
Capitol Hill to establish standards for highway signs and
lights, devise new approaches to regulating spectrum,
liability, insurance and safety, and consider revised highway
rules, parking structures and car-ownership paradigms.
As a member of the Federal Aviation Administration’s
UAS Registration Task Force and Micro UAS Aviation
Rulemaking Committee, CTA has worked to develop
drone registration guidelines and has made recommen-
dations for drone lights over people. CTA works with
elected oicials and government regulators to ensure that
drone technology is safely integrated into our national
airspace. As part of this initiative, we support the “Know
Before You Fly” consumer safety campaign, encouraging
responsible use of drones.
SELF-DRIVING TECH AT CES 2017
The Self-Driving Technology Marketplace at CES 2017
explored the road to driverless mobility. Keynotes from
NVIDIA and Nissan gave the world an insight into the
future of self-driving vehicles. NVIDIA Founder and CEO
Jen-Hsun Huang announced an AI car supercomputer
called Xavier used in NVIDIA’s own self-driving car, BB8,
and a new capability on the NVIDIA AI car computer
called AI Co-Pilot. Then Nissan announced the
semi-autonomous ProPilot system, as well as the company’s
plans to launch their Seamless Autonomous Mobility
(SAM) system. CES 2017 also featured two conference
tracks focused on the emerging ield of self-driving
technology, the Connect2Car and Vehicle Technology
conference tracks.
MARKET RESEARCH
CTA’s Automotive Technology Roadmap: The Road to
Autonomy whitepaper analyzes OEM Vehicle Technology
for active safety and autonomy. Also, CTA released its
Self- Driving Vehicles: Consumer Sentiments report that
looks to understand consumer sentiments about everyday
commuting woes; awareness and use of self-driving
features; and attitudes toward completely self-driving
vehicles and the potential beneits.
CTA DIVISIONS AND COUNCILSThe Vehicle Technology Division focuses on raising awareness
among consumers of the range of possibilities for both using
and integrating consumer technologies in vehicles.
The Self-Driving Vehicles Working Group works to drive the
adoption of self-driving vehicles and driver-assist technologies
across American roadways expediently and safely.
The Drone Policy Working Group formulates and advances
CTA positions and initiatives related to drones, and actively
supports and engages in the association’s advocacy eforts
before policymakers at the national, state, local and
international levels.
The Disruptive Innovation Council strives to support the
growth of innovative companies developing technologies
and services, like drones, that are disrupting traditional
business models and creating new markets.

SPORTS TECH AT CES 2017
CES 2017 showed attendees a new side of sports tech and
introduced new components to keep up with the rapidly-
growing industry. Under Armour Founder and CEO Kevin
Plank took the keynote stage to announce new techno-
logical advancements in its shoes, apparel and wearables.
In addition, the Sports Business Innovation conference
track, presented by Turner Sports, ran a series of jam-
packed sessions that featured big names from profession-
al sports leagues and partners. The track took a deep-dive
into the future of sports tech, including the fan experience,
arena technology, virtual and augmented reality, and data
analytics. Also, the Sports Tech Marketplace housed 30
exhibitors and delved into the innovations for athletes,
from sport-speciic smart products to state-of-the-art
fandom connectivity.
MARKET RESEARCH
CTA’s market research provides insights into the latest
trends in sports, health and itness tech. The Consumers
Journey to Purchase: Health and Fitness study looks at
the opportunity in retail among key consumer groups by
examining how consumers shop for health and itness
products, what drives them to purchase in one channel
over another, and the role salespeople, family, friends,
coworkers, reviews and packaging play in their purchase
decision.
Integrated technology for sports is being used in public
schools to monitor performance and increase safety.
Whether it is installing sensors in football players’ helmets
for concussion safety or monitoring heart rates to make
sure an athlete is not being pushed too far, integrated
technology is a serious topic of discussion for administrators.

Finally, Cisco’s Connected Athlete report explains how
athletes are being added to the Internet of Things with
people, processes and data working together to interact
with Wireless Body Area Networks and Medical Body
Area Networks. These can monitor an athlete’s biometric
performance, such as heart and respiratory rates, blood
oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, glucose and lactate
concentrations in the blood, and use this data to accurately
assess an athlete’s in-position physical condition and
energy expenditure. Sports tech is just at the beginning
of improving performance for athletes worldwide.
