Positive Culture for Learning (PCL)
We are now officially a PCL school and use this framework to
promote positive behaviours and learning. We have a committee
of 10 people including teachers, teacher aide, guidance officer,
DP’s, Principal and parents who will participate in their second of
four training days this Wednesday. Our school participated in a
review by region today to develop a baseline as to where our
school is sitting with behaviour management.
Prep Interviews 2020 Interviews are underway and we currently have 93 prep students
confirmed for 2020. Our Prep Transition Program is going well
and is well supported by Pre Prep students and their parents.
Our goal is a seamless transition to school for these students
and parents in 2020.
Staffing Update 2020 In 2020, we will be continuing to operate with an additional DP (two in total) to help meet the needs of our school community. I can confirm we currently have one transfer coming in (teacher) and no teachers transferring out.
School Captain Applications for 2020
Applications have now closed for School Captain in 2020. All other student leadership positions will offered early in 2020. The number of applications is high which the students have been congratulated for having the self-confidence to apply.
BYO IPad classes 2020
The level of support to operate one BYO Ipad class per year is
looking like a possibility in 2020. Applications are still open and
close at the end of week 5, when a decision will be made as to
what will be offered in 2020.
Arts Night Traditionally a very well supported school event, preparations are
well underway for Thursday 24 October. Unfortunately, this event
is on at the same time as Nerang High School Awards Night at
HOTA which represented a high number of Gilston students last
year.
Year 6 Graduation The Graduation committee is busy starting to plan for this event
which is on Tuesday in the last week of school. Invitations will be
coming home soon and the night will follow the same format of
last year given the positive feedback received on the night.
Storage Shed (next to Hall)
Due to the immediate need of extra storage area in the Hall, I
have actioned the commencement of the build with the slab
being completed today. The kit will arrive at the end of this week
with an operational shed in place next week fingers crossed. I
have asked PCYC and the P&C to provide any financial support
for the school to fund this project.
Student Free Day Monday 21 October
No lessons or supervision will be provided on this day as it is a
gazetted student free day and teachers will not be at work on this
day at Gilston SS due to a workplace reform.

Early Years Coordinator Jolie Angus Gilston Geckos Last Thursday we had 77 of our future Prep students spend the morning in our Prep classrooms. Their parents spent the morning with Miss Versteegen in the Library, ‘playing’ with a variety of resources and toys that help build fine motor strength. The feedback from the morning was very positive. Orientation Day Orientation Day is coming up on Tuesday 5 November and will run for the entire morning session (9:00am-11:00am). If you have a child commencing school next year, it is highly recommend that you both attend. More information will be emailed to parents this week. Playgroup Playgroup meets in the Old School Building every Thursday from 9:00am -10:00am. New families are always welcome. Dates for Your Diary

Parent Information Session
From the Autism Hub and Reading Centre Dyslexia October – Raising Awareness Dyslexia is a learning difficulty associated with reading words, letters and symbols. It often affects spelling, writing and reading. Children with dyslexia may have trouble with letters, words, numbers and with reading comprehension. Sounding out new words and learning sight words can be difficult. A sign can be that a child will complain of the words, symbols or letters are moving whilst they are attempting to copy, read or write. Spotlight on Learning... Year 1 1J have been busy learning skills during our computer lab time. We began practicing logging on and logging off, using Reading Eggs and Mathletics. Then we began to use typing skills and tying up our weekend
recounts. After we typed up our recounts, we changed the size of our writing and changed the font to fancy styles then print. Next, we learnt to jump across to 3D paint and create a picture to match our recounts. Our
next challenge in the computer lab looking at PowerPoint.
Spotlight on Learning… Year 5
Year 5 students have been creating sculptural artworks of their spirit animals. Students have explored the values, beliefs and sculp-tures by Asian and Indigenous cultures and how spirit animals influence their lives. Each student created their sculpture based on their own design and sketch.

Summer Menu A copy of our new Summer menu went home on Monday with the oldest sibling in each family. The menu has been changed so that we can comply with the smart choice guidelines. Smart Choices classifies food and drinks using a spectrum of GREEN, AMBER or RED. Items identified as RED are not suitable for tuckshop menus and their supply is limited to no more than two occasions per term. This applies to all situations where food and drink is supplied in the school environment including school excursions, school camps, fundraising, classroom rewards, school events such as celebrations and sports days, and food used in curriculum activities. You will notice some favourites are missing like our famous homemade cookies and vegemite scrolls just to name a few, but I am working on creating some other delicious “healthier “options to replace these. If anyone has any recipes that they would like to share with me, I would love to see them. Our first RED DAY for this term is Thursday 24 October 2019. On this day we have a selection of old time favourites that can be purchased over the counter at first and second breaks. Keep an eye out on the Gilston Gourmet Tuckshop Facebook page for more details on what will be available. **A special thanks to Andrea Goldring, for her ongoing support and help for designing our menu this year and for the past couple of years. ** Volunteers Thank you to all our volunteers that assist and help out in the Tuckshop every week, I really do appreciate you all. We need more volunteers on Fridays. Fridays are the busiest day at our school Tuckshop, where you can get up to half the school order 1st break lunch. So any help from 9:00am -11.30am would be very greatly appreciated. Duties can include making a simple vegemite sandwich, tossing a salad together, making a hot dog and putting drinks in the lunch bags. All very easy and it’s great to do something for your school community.
