Code Talkers
The second grade students are off and
coding! The Hour of Code is a standing
tradition in the computer science
community. It was started as a one hour
introduction to coding, with the intention of
broadening the participation in computer
science throughout the world. It is
traditionally held during Computer Science
Week (December 5-11) but is certainly not
limited to just those days. During the
remainder of December, teachers will lead
second graders in exploring a variety of
websites where coding is explained, fostered,
and explored. In broadening their
knowledge, we also hope to encourage their
understanding of technology and open young
minds to careers in computer science.

State Champions Celebration Parade – TOMORROW!
The Town of Somers will be hosting a celebration parade to honor the four SHS teams that have
won the title of State Champions - 2004 Boys Cross Country, 2014 Girls Soccer, 2016 Boys
Soccer and 2016 Football. The parade will take place at 2:00 on Saturday, December 10th, and
will go from Van Tassel to the high school. A ceremony will be held on our competition field at
the end of the parade.
Treat Others the Way You Want to Be Treated
In conjuncture with the latest Colored in Character Day,
students reflected on the No Place for Hate Promise. How
do I want to feel when I come to school? How do I want
others to feel when they come into our classroom? Students
reflected on the classroom agreements they made back in
September and recommitted to the work of respect and
friendship. In keeping with the “Golden Rule” students made
connections between their feelings and the feelings of
others. Students listened to a reading of Laurie Keller’s
Do Unto Otters, a book that defines so many strong
characteristics of respect and cooperation.
