The Primary Update Grade 2—Grade 5 March 21st, 2013 WELCOME PAGE International Day proved to be a great success. Just seeing all of our students, from across the whole school, of different nationalities, supporting and celebrating our differences demonstrated just how diverse and inclusive we are as a school. The Parade was especially impressive with students walking as part of their home county, waving their flags high and marching to their National Anthem. It was certainly a proud moment for all involved. I would like to congratulate Radia Si Youcef and Franziska Voss Schwarz for creating the vision of what our first International Day should resemble and also to all those parents who brought it to life through their support. You have most definitely set high standards for future events. Well done! Both students and teachers are very much ready for this well-deserved holiday. Everybody has been working really hard during this Semester and we have achieved a great deal as a result. For those of you who are taking the opportunity to head back to your home country we have a request. In a bid to celebrate just how diverse we are and maintain your son/daughters heritage, should you come across any books, resources, artifacts, leaflets from museums, etc , which are relevant to your home country and you wish to donate to JBS this would be very much appreciated. International Mindedness is something in which we need to teach explicitly to our students. We strive to develop our student’s understanding of our similarities in addition to an acceptance of our differences and an ability to live together within those differences. So, using resources from the plethora of home countries in which our school originates form would be one way of supporting the teaching of International mindedness. When we return if you do wish to contribute then please send such resources to myself. Thank you.

WELCOME PAGE

International Day proved to be a great success. Just seeing all of our students, from across the whole school, of different nationalities, supporting and celebrating our differences demonstrated just how diverse and inclusive we are as a school. The Parade was especially impressive with students walking as part of their home county, waving their flags high and marching to their National Anthem.

When we return after the Spring break it is very likely that ‘Red breaks’ will be implemented as the temperature begins to soar. For those new families to JBS, this term refers to when it is deemed too hot by the nurse for the students to play outside. Our school nurses follow guidelines in relation to this, and as a policy we do not allow the children to play outside in a bid to prevent them from be-coming dehydrated and hot. Obviously we would prefer the children to spend as much time outside in the fresh air, however this is not going to be possible for all breaks as the weeks progress over the remainder of Semester Two. We will aim to allow the children to play outside for the first break as long as we can. However, the lunch break will be spent indoors where the children will eat their food either inside their classrooms or in the canteen, depending on their age. Tables will be sanitized be-fore lunch commences and cleaned afterwards before the afternoon session commences. After eating their lunch in the designated time, the children will participate in a variety of structured activities either in the Secondary or Primary gymnasiums, listening to stories in the library or having fun in the soft play area. We will be taking into consideration that some

Even though the children will have limited time outside in the nearer future we will continue to fol-low the rule No hat, No play. Unfortunately, there are still many children attending school without a hat. Although this may seem unfair when a child has lost their hat through no fault of their own, we adhere to this rule to ensure your son or daughter is protected from the harsh sun rays. Please re-member if you do not have the regulatory school hat then a dark, plain hat will be acceptable. We would really appreciate your co-operation with this.

Lastly, the teachers and I would just like to say a big thank you to the class representatives who are doing a tremendous job. Keep the ideas rolling in! Additionally, please remember we welcome your support in class so if you are keen to help out with reading or another area of the curriculum, please inform your child’s class teacher.

Wishing you a relaxing Spring break.

Best wishes

Miss Williams

GRADE 2

The children had to carry out an experiment in groups to find out what dissolved in water and what didn't. They investigated materials such as salt, sand, oil, metal, plastic and soap and wrote up their results after. The class had to pretend they were either dirty water or a consumer of water, adding in the dirty water and the consumer had to take some of the water out. We then discussed how we felt about having to use dirty water in our homes and what we can do to try and keep water clean and save water.

The Lions performed a Rainforest Assembly to fellow pupils l and parents. The children worked very hard to learn their lines and a song. The parents enjoyed the assembly very much!

As part of our IPC topic we have been planning and preparing healthy wraps. In pairs we planned our recipes and gave our shopping list to Mrs Davies. She had the task of buying all the ingredients we needed. Later in the week we made our wraps using the healthy ingredients that we had chosen. The wraps really were delicious. A healthy snack to keep us fit. We recorded the recipes and made a class recipe book. Come and have a look.

Alessandra and Maria check their recipe.

Alya and Nemat have filled their wrap with lots of healthy ingredients.

Tanatswa is taking time and care with her wrap.

Rakan and Hugo rolling their wrap.

GRADE 4

On Monday 18th March Grade 4 went on a trip to Dubai Museum because we are learning about history! Fortunately it did not take long to get there on the bus because we were chatting like mothers! We even saw some mosaics on our way and we had been learning about them in class! We had to do a quiz with our group and it was so busy and a huge crowd of tourists surrounded us! As time went on we saw weapons, armour and even statues of boys and girls. But the sun got hotter every second! We also saw a video about Dubai from the 1930’s – 2000’s, desert animals and a Souk. We had a magnificent day at the Dubai Museum!

GRADE 5 The Grade 5 Exhibition was a huge success with students sharing their individual knowledge with students and parents. Each

student had five weeks to research their chosen topic, collect resources, collate information, prepare their stand and complete their

Process Journal. The journal involved learning new skills such as citing sources in the correct format, developing an understanding

of the IB Learner Profile and independent inquiry.
