CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME NEW 2017 PHIP BOARD MEMBERS!

I’ve been a Parrot Head Club Member and attended MOTM since 2003 and have volun-teered for security, merchan-dise table, gift bag stuffing and anything else that was needed to be done. In 2008 I was asked if I would assume the MOTM registration chairper-son position and have been “invited” to return since. This past year I decided to throw my hat in the ring for VP. I know I have big shoes (thanks Andy Harrell) to fill and will do my best for PHIP. I’ve been fortu-nate to make a lot of friends in this crazy parrothead world and enjoy meeting and making more friends.

PHIP Vice President Rick Fyffe

PHIP Dir of Membership Sue Kermis

I am originally from Roches-ter, NY, where I first found Parrot Heads with the Lake Ontario Parrot Head Club in 2003. I moved to The Villages in Florida in 2010 and joined The Villages Parrot Head Club. In 2011, I became one of the Regional Communica-tors for Florida. As the Direc-tor of Membership I look for-ward to working with your Clubs and getting to know all the Parrot Head Leaders.

Meeting of the Minds By Andrew Talbert, PHiP Director of Conventions

SPCA, the KOA Care Camps, and Key West Police Athletic League. From our on-site registration late fees last year at MOTM 2015 the Virtual Parrot Head Club gave away money to The Visiting Nurs-es Hospice of the Florida Keys, Scleroderma Foundation of South East Florida, and Toys N Tots. Our PHiP 501(c)3 charity arm, the Lone Palm Foundation, held a very successful auction for helping Par-rot Heads with natural disasters. The Zonta walk featuring Team Parrot Head was very successful this year! The raffle baskets raised a very nice sum for 2017 donation to charity! All told…in 2016 as a result of fund raising attributed to MOTM over $32,000 were given away. As for future money to be given away including the total PHiP raffle, PHiP Scholarship raf-fle, and Lone Palm Foundation over $41,000 was raised! Parrot Heads are amazing! I want to say this was the smooth-est MOTM I have ever been a part of. I am VERY PROUD of all the support of the PHiP board, our sponsors, stage, sound and lighting

Meeting of the Minds 2016 has come and gone with some wonder-ful memories remaining of all the great times we had down in Key West. I wanted to take a few mo-ments to recap the event and talk about what is ahead for 2017.

Meeting of the Minds “Here We Are” was one of the weeks that will go down in the books as one fantastic event! The 25th Annual Meeting of the Minds was sold out and I do not believe there has ever been a larger crowd at the Casa Marina on Saturday. In my final meetings with the Casa Marina staff they said they had never seen that many people on the grounds for any event. Ever. The scene was amazing and there are some awe-some photos of the crowd packed into the main stage area on the beach. Both pools were FULL of people! Our crowd filled Duval Street on Friday for two blocks solid as they enjoyed three great bands! What was accomplished in Key West at Meeting of the Minds? We had PHun! The weather was beau-tiful from beginning to end! We were surrounded by our PHriends! We raised some PHunds for some great charities and organizations to donate in 2017! There was great music! We raised scholarship money for our college Keets for 2017 and beyond! We had 259 attendees attempt to donate at our blood drive. We collected 212 pints of blood this year, a new rec-ord for us and One Blood! Awe-some! The toy drive produced 14 boxes of toys plus gift cards. The Salvation Army was extremely grateful for the donations! On Thursday at MOTM a new single day registration record was set with 3293 people registered and hundreds more support and artist

credentials given out. There was barely a line all day! By Saturday almost 5,000 people were creden-tialed for the event including ven-dors, support crews, musicians, and sponsors. The gift bag team set a record for setup and execution of the stuffing of 3700 bags. The stuffing was finished in 2.5 hours! Our raffle basket team put a smile on the face of a grand prize winner this year and they told me how great it was to work with such awesome volunteers. We had over 120 people on our MOTM security team as well as a full crew from the Key West Police Department. Thank you all for your leadership and support as we had a massive crowd on the beach this year and our security team kept it all safely rocking! This is a testimony to your preparation and pre-planning. The charities who saw contribu-tions this year were the PHiP Scholarship Fund, Florida Keys

crews, Key West City leadership, Key West Police and Fire Department, the whole Casa Marina team, committee leadership, volunteers, and attendees. I want to take a moment to thank eve-ry person who volunteered any mo-ment of time during MOTM. Without every volunteer this event would nev-er even get started. It is ALL ABOUT YOU…every one of you volunteers. Thank you. Thanks to everyone for helping with keeping the Casa Marina Resort com-pletely full and even selling out the sister Reach Resort! The Casa Marina is the place to be for MOTM as many people tell me year after year. There is so much music on site you could come to Key West and find it hard to leave the Casa during MOTM! We have to fill the Casa every year and you keep it full! You will find the 2017 rates will continue to be among the lowest in Key West especially for a Hilton Waldorf Astoria. At the Casa we had $5.00 drink specials from Margaritaville Spirits and Landshark for $3.50…tough to match in Key West for sure. Thanks to all the MOTM sponsors and MOTM supporters for the whole year of support. THANK YOU MAR-GARITAVILLE!! We cannot have this celebration without you and your contributions. Thanks Tech-Tronics for your usual outstanding sound and lighting. Thanks to the Buffett stage guys JL Jamison and Billy Szocska! Thanks to the local JL crew! The MOTM main stage is totally the best ever. Thanks to the crew at the Art of Sound for the Sun Sun stage sound! I also want to thank all the musicians, bands, and support crews that come to MOTM and provide FIVE days of awesome music for us. There was Trop Rock music from beginning to end and almost half the night at times. I appreciate the support of all of the Coral Reefer Band and alumni travel-ing to Key West after a long tour leg right before our event! I want to give a special shout out to Toby Keith this year for flying all the way from Okla-

homa to perform for us at his ex-pense! That was not a last minute thing as the planning started in July and it really put a smile on many faces. How about Scott Emerick? He was awesome! Thank you Mac McAnally and the TKO Artist Management group for all of your help! Your ongoing support for MOTM is making the event ROCK. The Beachside Album Hour was amazing with all of the support from Ramajay Intercoastal, Coral Reefer Band members, and Keith Sykes sitting in on his two songs from “Son of a Son of Sail-or.” I have been told over and over how everyone loved Marshall Chapman and Will Kimbrough on Saturday. My email inbox has been buzzing with requests to bring them back to MOTM. Did I mention the crowd noise for the Peter Mayer Group after their set? It was amaz-ing to hear that crowd roar from the stage. There were so many musical moments I could write about but there is no space here to do any of them justice. You should be at MOTM next year! There is only one Meeting of the Minds. Next year marks the 26th Annual Meeting of the Minds. Planning has been underway for 2017 for several months now. I can tell you that there will be NO letup in entertain-ment. I plan to throw the kitchen sink at the schedule so get ready for the 2017 schedule announcement in a few short months. Meeting of the Minds 2017 registration and the

Casa Marina MOTM reservations block opened on December 27 just over two weeks ago! 2017 MEETING OF THE MINDS REGISTRATION REGISTRATION FOR THE 26th ANNUAL MEETING OF THE MINDS 2017 is OPEN and going very well! Don’t get left out as we stop registration at 3,500 or Sep-tember 15th whichever comes first!! The link is: https://www.phip.com/meeting If you have ANY QUESTIONS about Meeting of the Minds regis-tration questions are generally an-swered at the FAQ link: https://www.phip.com/meeting-faq You will have opportunities to reg-ister for volunteer activities when you register. IF YOU ARE INTER-ESTED IN THE GIFT BAG STUFFING EVENT please register early as that event is sold out when we reach 125 people. The bag stuff-ing party always fills VERY QUICKLY AND IS ALMOST FULL!!! BE ADVISED!! The CASA MA-RINA IS VERY CLOSE TO A SELL-OUT!!

Parrot Heads of Pensacola Win the

2016 PHIP Golden Coconut Award

The 25th Anniversary of Meeting of the Minds is now in the books and it was a wonderful celebra-tion of PHIP family!! To add to the daily celebration of all things PHIP, on Saturday Morning, the winning Parrot Head Golden Coconut Club was announced. But first a little history behind the Golden Coconut … In 1996, Margaritaville and Parrot Heads In Paradise, Inc. decided to create an award to be given to a deserv-ing Parrot Head Club, emblematic and in recognition of the out-standing Charitable and Environ-mental efforts of ALL Parrot Head Clubs. Today, competition for the covet-ed award is waged through a "blind essay" submitted to an il-lustrious panel of judges com-posed of previous Golden Coco-nut Award recipients. Bestowed upon the winning chapter, the Golden Coconut is a one of a kind trophy designed, hand-crafted presented during the annual Meet-ing of the Minds. We had 3 times the entries this year from last year and the clubs who entered essays were very cre-ative. The judges had a tough de-cision on their hands and at times the scoring was close. However as we can honor only one club per year, the esteemed panel of judg-es did their job and scored the winning essay on the basis that it truly showed the “spirit” of the winning club. Like all of our PHIP Clubs, this club takes the “Party With A Pur-

pose” motto and gives back within their own community often. They participate in Road Clean Us, Humane Society do-nations of time and dollars as well as support for their local Boy’s Club/Girls’ Club to name just a few of the annual efforts. But there was this one particu-lar project … a project where they became the recipients in an way to where their giving led to them receiving and it changed them and the children they were

helping forever. Soon you will be able to read about their annual Christmas Book Project, their gift of litera-cy, on line at the Golden Coconut Winner’s portion of the website. … https://www.phip.com/club-winners. An essay titled How Parrot Head Changed the World Congratulations again to the Par-rot Heads of Pensacola, the new-est members of the prestigious Golden Coconut Clubs!!

In the early 1990s, a different kind of Parrot Head club... an online Parrot Head Club was formed. There would be no geographical boundaries to limit membership, only one's appreciation for the life-style Jimmy Buffett sings about would be a requirement. Parrot Heads in Paradise, granted the Vir-tual PHC an official charter... to be the first, and only online Parrot Head Club!
