Happy Birthday

Phil Roth – May 3 Mike Buckley – May 8

Sandy Stewart – May 20

Happy Kiwanis Anniversary

Ron Pauli – 1 Year

John Johnson's surgery for liver cancer went extremely well and he will not require chemo or radiation! What wonderful news!! In addition, we had a chance to visit with Ross Moerman at our April morning meeting. He was here for a short time, went on a cruise and them head back to California for 6 weeks of radiation. He looks great, is doing well and is in great spirits. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with you and we're so grateful that you're both doing so well..

Kids Need Us, We Need You Meet and Greet

Our Meet and Greet was an enjoyable event attended by several members and our grant and scholarship winners. The parents of the scholarship winners were also in attendance. This was the first time that we recognized our grant winners in a public setting and the two that attended were very grateful for the donation to their special project. Grant winner, Parkwood Elementary, will be purchasing guitars for their music department and St. John's will be buying a computer which will be dedicated to children who need special help with reading. Our third grant winner, who was unable to attend, is Ridge Circle Elementary who will be applying their grant to their Arts and Crafts program. We have three potential members from our event and we hope that everyone will continue to seek our other potential members for our Club by simply sharing what we do and who we are. See photos on the following page.

Recruiting New Members is an ongoing

process........

Who Joins Kiwanis

Kiwanis club members believe in service. They care about children.

They're interested in the community around them because the

community matters to them.

They're people like you. Friends. Neighbors. Volunteers who want to

make a difference. And they love to see the difference they make when

they work together.

Benefits of Joining

Study after study shows that volunteering with an organization like

Kiwanis does more than make people feel good. Volunteering enhances

social networks, improves mental health and contributes to higher

levels of happiness, self-esteem, self-worth and life satisfaction.

Volunteers develop life skills and leadership abilities that can lead to

employment opportunities.

Kids Need Kiwanis

Kiwanis is the safety net that creates opportunities for children to be

curious, safe & healthy regardless of the community in which they live.

Kiwanis is a positive influence in locations worldwide with a dream that

all children will wake up in communities that believe in them, nurture

them and provide the support they need to thrive.

Phil's Friends Hope Luncheon

Aneta & Cathy enjoyed a few hours at the Arrowhead Country Club in Wheaton for the Phil's Friends Hope Luncheon. The event included speakers, a silent auction, a delicious lunch and more. We had an opportunity to learn about the organization and are even more impressed now with the work they do. We're hoping that more of us may attend next year.

We are very grateful for our Grant Committee, chairperson, Terri Johnson, Sue Begy and Pat Hogan and for our Scholarship Committee, chairperson, Aneta Lysek, Ross Moerman and Sandy Stewart. Thanks for all your hard work and for selecting such worthy winners!

Fun at Phil's Friends

Aneta and Claudia Lysek represented Kiwanis at Phil's Friends in April, spending some time decorating boxes for goodies for cancer patients. Our next visit to Phil's Friends will be on Monday, May 14. Come out and join us!

Peanut Days

Friday and Saturday, September 28-29

As you all know, this is our biggest fundraiser of the year so we hope that EVERYONE will take an active role in this event & help in any way they can. Keep in mind that this is the one time that we ask ALL our members to participate in a club project! As always, we need more adult peanut partners, so if you know of a group who may be interested, please let us know ASAP! This is a great opportunity for other organizations to raise some funds and provide us with some assistance in our endeavors! There's money to be made for everyone!! Feel free to share the flyer on page 10. We also need to put more effort into underwriting and will be asking everyone for their input on that topic. Please start thinking about new businesses that have come into the area or individuals who may be willing to make a donation. We will start having meetings shortly, so watch your email for dates and times!

The Streamwood Memorial Day Ceremony honors all those who have served in defense of our country. This moving tribute is held at the Veteran’s Memorial by Village Hall. The candlelight vigil begins on Sat., May 27. Throughout the night, vigil guards march past the monoliths. They are relieved at 11:00 AM on Sun., May 28 to formally start the Memorial Day Ceremony.

The Village of Bartlett commemoration is on May 28. It begins at 10:00 AM at Bartlett Park, Oak and North Avenues, with an American Legion flag retirement ceremony. At 10:30 AM veterans, scouts, civic groups and bagpipers line up for the walk to Bartlett Cemetery, which steps off at 11:00 AM. At the cemetery, the Remembrance continues with a brief program and, returning this year, a cannon salute to Bartlett’s local heroes.

Chicken and Broccoli Alfredo

Ingredients

8 ounces rotini pasta

12 ounces broccoli florets

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 boneless, skinless thin-sliced chicken breasts

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

3/4 cup chicken broth

3/4 cup milk, or more, as needed

1/4 cup heavy cream

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves

Directions

1. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta according to package instructions. Within the last 2 minutes of cooking time, add broccoli; drain well.

2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Season chicken breasts with salt and pepper, to taste. Add to skillet and cook, flipping once, until cooked through, about 3-4 minutes per side. Let cool before dicing into bite-size pieces.

3. Melt butter in the skillet over medium heat. Whisk in flour until lightly browned, about 1 minute. Gradually whisk in chicken broth and milk, and cook, whisking constantly, until incorporated, about 1-2 minutes. Stir in heavy cream and garlic powder until slightly thickened, about 1-2 minutes.

4. Stir in Parmesan until well combined, about 1 minute. If the mixture is too thick, add more milk as needed.

5. Stir in pasta, broccoli and chicken. Gently toss to combine; season with salt and pepper, to taste.

6. Serve immediately, garnished with parsley, if desired.

Weird driving laws abound, and every state has a few that are, shall we say, out of the ordinary. Some laws are outdated, while others have no logic purpose for existing. One thing they all have in common is that they are actually on the books, and can be amusing to read about but frustrating if you are actually stopped. Hopefully, most of these laws are no longer enforced, but just being on the books means they could be. Here is a list of our 13 favorite weird driving laws, along with some related laws in each runner up position.

1. Members of the Georgia Assembly cannot be ticketed while Assembly is in session. The purpose behind this law was undoubtedly to prevent Assemblymen from being detained for undue periods of time, but it is easy to see how this law could be used to avoid other driving offenses as well.

2. Denver prohibits driving a black car on Sunday, but the most limiting color law is in Minneapolis, where it is against the law to drive a red car on Lake Street at any time.

3. In Montana, you are not allowed to leave a sheep unattended in your truck. In California, you are allowed to shoot only one mammal from the window of your car: a whale.

4. Oregon makes it mandatory to yield to pedestrians while driving on a sidewalk. In Dublin, Georgia, driving on playgrounds is prohibited, which may not be a bad thing, but seems rather unnecessary.

5. Rhode Island has a law that requires you to make an audible noise when passing another vehicle. Pennsylvania requires you to stop every mile and set off flares or other warning signals and then allow 10 minutes for livestock to clear the road.

6. Tennessee and Mississippi both have laws that require female drivers to have a male flagger walking front of the vehicle. Other states have similar laws in place to prevent accidentally driving through herds crossing the roads, but they do not single out women as needing the assistance.

7. Oregon has a law against leaving your car door open too long. The state also prohibits using your car to demonstrate physical endurance, so make to coast off the roadway if your vehicle breaks down.

8. In Youngstown, Ohio, you can be ticketed if your car runs out of gas. Even worse, Minnetonka, Minnesota writes tickets for leaving mud or other debris in the road.

9. On Kansas Avenue, in Kansas City, the law forbids transporting dead poultry on the roads. And if you squeal your tires in the state, you could face up to 3 months in jail.

10. Evanston, Illinois makes it illegal to change clothes in a vehicle with the windows drawn. If a fire is involved, closing the curtains is okay. Really, it's the law.

11. Indianola, Iowa prohibits ice cream trucks from using the roads. It is hard to tell whether this law is supposed to regulate ice cream eating or private enterprise, but it is on the books.

12. Scituate, Rhode Island makes it illegal to carry beer in your car, even if it is unopened. Hilton Head, South Carolina goes a step farther and makes it against the law to have trash in your car.

13. In California, it is illegal for anyone to jump from a car that is going more than 65 miles an hour. And once you bail out, keep in mind that California also prohibits driverless vehicles from traveling in excess of 60 miles per hour. These are only two unusual laws for a state that has many,
