The Present andComing Man

Material comfort is abundant in presenttimes. What we lack though are equal dis-tribution of resources and appreciation ofthe world in general, among other things.We build intricate systems of functioning,but forget to add a humane touch to ouractions. This book entreats us to comparethe past and the present to see what islacking in the latter.

This book should not be looked at as a glo-rification of the past. Rather, it sheds lighton how the past is not a mere path thatlead us to the present, to better things. Inso thinking, one tends to shun the pastaltogether as an outdated version of thepresent, for what connects the past and thepresent is not a single, one-way road, butone that has several ramifications.

The Present and the Coming Man opensreaders’ eyes to the valuable lessons from

the past, which if implemented in the pres-ent will steer us towards building a betterfuture, where the world does not ail fromthe apathy and ignorance prevalent in ourtimes that hinder spiritual harmony. Toaccept elements from the past is not toreject the present; this book is a primer onhow to find balance. We submit this edition at the feet of Godand bow our heads in worship. The firstedition of this book was published in Tamiland was sold out within a month. This wasfollowed by numerous requests from thereading public, which confirmed our beliefin the universal appeal of this book. Thesecond edition of this book incorporatesseveral corrections, a great deal of newinformation and pleasing songs.

This book is in fact an affectionate letterwritten by Swami to the head of theVivekananda Nilayam in Avinipatti, therevered Sri A.P. Palaniappan. It providesan apt exposition on the state of the worldand on the questions related to the future.

Swami Shuddhananda Bharathi is a new-age poet. He has undertaken a penancewith a view to rid the world of destructive,egotistic, evil illusions and to bring out thedivine qualities inherent in mankind andto invoke the divine force capable of trans-forming human life into an immortal one.

Presentation ofDr. Shuddhananda Bharati

May 11, 1897 – March 7, 1990

The wise one to the cosmic ageAlthough more than 90 years old, in hisschool in the south of India near Madurai,Kavi Yogi Maharishi (great divine vision-ary, wise poet), Dr. Shuddhananda Bharatiworked like a young man of twenty. Whenhe was asked his age, he answered, “Myage is Courage!”

The Yogi wrote several hundred works inEnglish, French, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu andSanskrit; and five thousand songs, and fif-teen hundred poems in French. The mag-num opus of the man conscious of thepresence of God in him, Bharata Shakti, (in50,000 verses) described his ideal: onlyOne Humanity living in communion withonly One God in a transformed world!Bharata Shakti is a monumental and uniquework. The Yogi depicts the gasoline of allthe religions, of all the prophets andsaints, all the approaches of Yoga and all

the cultures on an allegorical fabric. It is abook for any age, which all spiritualresearchers and all nations should readand meditate on.

His commitment is summarized in hisbook celebrating his life, L’Ame Pèlerine(Pilgrim Soul).

The two poems mentioned in the openingexpress perfectly his ideal.

His mantra, Aum Shuddha Shakti Aum,nourishes our souls and guides our stepstoward the inner joy Ananda. It means: Thelight of Grace and power of the puresupreme Almighty bless us with peace,happiness and prosperity!

I. The Present Man

1. State of the World

Dear,

The Goddess of Time is undertaking a voy-age towards a new dawn. Today, in thecourse of that voyage, the world is travers-ing the midnight hour. The political agita-tions and the people’s angst being wit-nessed today are but the sounds generatedby that progressive voyage. It is a noisegenerated by the action of removing theaccumulated mud from the moss-grownpond of the old life. The bell has tolled forthe devil tormenting man for a very longtime. The wars we are witnessing today arebut his screams, as he turns tail and fleesthe scene. Evil forces are ruling the world.The fusillade of bullets fired by them isreducing our ego-filled lives to rubble.

The world is in a state of turmoil. Theworld’s stage is in disarray. So many dis-turbances, unexpected events and spell-binding scenes are laying a siege around

us. The machine culture is developing at agiddy pace; it is destroying nature, andkilling living beings. It produces goods ingigantic quantities and searches for mar-kets to sell them. This is giving rise to com-petition, war and jealousy. War cloudsgather in the overhanging sky and bulletsfly. The poisonous smoke chokes thebreath. Human life trembles on the edge ofthe cannon. The whole political skyappears to be a blood-spattered drumsounding the bugle of war. The rays ofpeace have been extinguished in this skyfilled with bloodthirsty clouds. Kingdoms,republics, dictatorships, elected govern-ments—all are jumping on to the band-wagon of war drums.

The dice rolls in different ways on thechessboard of politics. Business rivalry,trade slowdown, abundance of machin-ery, unemployment, lethargy of humanendeavor, sorrows of the poor, play ofostentation by the rich, wicked deeds ofarrogant illusion, increase of atheism andlack of spiritual wisdom are prevalent allover the world. Money power and military

might form the backbone of powerfulnations. Angry agitations take wings like arocket. In the West, man appears to beborn only to become a sacrificial goat atthe altar of the war devil. Not only men,even women are taking up arms. ‘Mycountry is supreme, the world belongs tome, my laws are the best’—this arroganceleads to the use of military force to instillfear in the world, the poisonous smokechokes out life and the pile of bodies isused as a stepping stone to victory.

2. Physical Marvels

Physical marvels circle the sky searchingfor nations to subjugate. They kill innocentpeople with their bombs; they serve toprotect only evil illusory forces that subju-gate nations without charity, compassion,love and support, and wreak havoc!“Bang”!—a town is ruined by the explo-sion of a bomb. Before one could utter“Oh”, a thousand persons are sent to theirdeaths. Tharuka, Dhasamuga, inhabitantsof Thiripuram, Kamsa, Duryodhana,

descendants of Kalakeya, you have allbecome saints! Demons that are a thou-sand times more cruel are ruling the worldtoday with the help of cannons. We arewitnessing worldly illusion rearing itshead to inject its poison into the river oflife and destroy it! Each country is dressedin military fatigues and is war-ready in itsfortress of cannons! O worldly civilization!Is your brain a volcano? Are your handsthe kiss of Yama? Is your mouth Kaban-dan? Is your tower of greed a Thiripuram?O Goddess of civilization, are the lives yousacrificed not sufficient? Many powerfulgovernments practiced the art of stockpil-ing arms covertly and appearing to makeefforts to cut down on arms to maintainpeace. But what happened next? “Bangbang, phat phat, dum dopp!” Italian bombsrained destruction in the battle of Adwa(Adua) in Abyssinia (Ethiopia)! From theiraero planes, white people tossed out offer-ings of civilization! The battle-scarred sol-dier swears that the black brain is inca-pable of grasping words. If the same bombhad fallen in Italian Somalia, the whole

white world would have screamed mur-der. It would have said, “European pridehas been ground into dust”, reasonenough to decimate Abyssinia; Dafarysaved himself from getting the blame.

3. Where are Ethics?

What happened to the meetings held bypolitically savvy men, the diligent messen-gers, the agreements and Geneva play-act-ing? White racism was unwilling to evensit with the black man! Where are ethics?Where is justice? Where is truth? Wherewill it go? Those interested may look intothe Bible! Does one, on being struck on onecheek, show the other one? If a bullet hitsone’s back, does one turn around and say,“You can hit my father’s face too?” Is thereany point in fighting till one’s strengthruns out? Is it possible to deflect a bombfrom the skies with an arrow? Can onewield the sword in the midst of poisonoussmoke? As the adage goes “he who cuts aleaf will also cut the bunch”, aggression isbecoming an attractive option for more

and more countries; of the five continents,it holds sway over four and a half. There isno power to wield the sword in opposition;opposition lacks unity. Poor countries aresuffering like a deer caught in a tiger’sjaws. One who opposes is sure to meetone’s end! Ethiopia struggled to defenditself to the utmost. When the Italian bombfell on its territory, it beat a war drum cov-ered with rhinoceros hide. When the houseis on fire, would a corpse also not wake upto lend a hand? At that moment even aheavy object would appear to be light.Such a crisis stared Ethiopia in the face.Look at the emotions surging to the fore inthe battle song of Ethiopia:

Soldiers!

Our duty today is to protect our country!

Let us wage a battle to vanquish the enemywho is attacking our home!

God is on our side—the Goddess of right-eousness will give us strength!

Stand up, brave soldiers;crush the cruel aggressors!

There is a threat today to our Mother’svery existence!

Is there any point in our living? Let us beatthe drum of war!

We have taken the first step to drive outthe enemy and to restore righteousness

Let us now carry forward the fight vehemently!

The nation’s soul is withering—does thisdecaying body need to live

a hundred years?

Let us sacrifice a life from each house-hold—let us resolve to ensure the victoryof truth!

Even if we are confronted by the God ofDeath, let us stab Him to death

with our sword!

Beat the drum fearlessly—to the cry of‘Long live our valor’!

We cannot hope to see such brave senti-ments, such patriotic fervor, such a braveuprising in any other country. TheAbyssinian soldiers stood shoulder to

shoulder in their battle, convinced that‘righteousness is on our side, God is withus, there is nothing to fear’. Swordsflashed and drew blood! Standing up tobombs falling from the skies, everyone(men and women) waged an inspired bat-tle. What was the outcome? Abyssinia lostits liberty and was vanquished, just likethe Greek warrior Leonidas I, who hadconfronted the sea of the Persian armywith 300 soldiers, and the brave warriorRana Pratap Singh, who fought against apowerful army in Haldighati. Although allthe Abyssinian towns have been takenover by the enemy on the strength of itswar machine, one thing cannot betouched; that is enduring righteousness.

Not bowing down like slaves, Full of fortitude and a sense

of righteousness,More majestic than the mountains,The soldiers stood up to oppose the enemyand fell.Those who committed heinous murders toseize the country,

Will they be brought to justice, to beshamed and punished?

Abyssinia has been digested. Mussolinisays, “Bring me Tunis”. The war demonunleashed by Mussolini is roaming arro-gantly in the east and west. In Spain, a dic-tatorial regime has crushed independence.Like a whale swallowing fish, a powerfulkingdom threatens and swallows smallerkingdoms. The Japanese’s greed for terri-tory compels it to bomb China. Let us notforget that the unethical Duryodhana fellin the course of his reign, while Dharma-putra vanquished him after his sojourn inthe forest. The Goddess of Righteousnessis unable to inhale the poisonous smokeand turning Her face towards our country,stands perplexed.

4. Power of War

The wars we are witnessing are a goodpointer to the state of the world. In onecorner, everyone gathers to raise a hue andcry about ‘world peace, world unity’.

From the opposite corner, ruthless explo-sions of aggression are launched to strikeat their faces. Instead of good attributes,selfishness is the overriding attribute. Thefire of human sacrifice lit by Napoleon isspreading like a forest fire. No doubtNapoleon has a superior brain; the word‘fear’ does not exist in his vocabulary. Healways rejoiced on seeing the piles of bod-ies slayed by him. He also occupied andruled over Egypt for some time andcaused great fear in Europe. His veryname spelt a nightmare to other rulers. Hisdestiny changed in the course of five min-utes at Waterloo. What was the conditionof France when he was imprisoned andtaken to Helena? Pitiable!

All young men had been sacrificed at thealtar of the war god! Aged men, womenand children in the country were withoutsupport and endured severe hardships!The silver and gold went up in smoke inthe war! France was in the grip of poverty,drought, rebellion, killings, darkness andcruelty. In addition, its enemies grew innumber. Germany became an implacable

enemy of France. The confusion whichprevailed in Spain at that time laid thefoundation for the European war. Thebreath of righteousness has been chokedby the poisonous smoke as the power ofwar attempts to take control of the world.

He who lives by the sword Shall die by the sword. This is the law of nature.

The history of the world bears testimonyto this truth. Is it not a fact that even inIndia, multiple kingdoms have risen, gov-erned and fallen? Where are the threekings of Tamil Nadu? Where is the king-dom of Asoka? The times of Nandar, Gup-tas, Sankar, Kanavas, Telugus, Tamils,Rajputs, Turks and Mughals when theyruled India already appear to belong to apast era. The history of Greeks, Romans,Carthaginians, Jews and others is filledwith rivers of blood, battlefields andfloods of blood!

Now the river of blood has widened into asea. Previously, wars were fought on thebasis of physical strength; today, they are

fought on the strength of arms and men-tal faculties. More and more new instru-ments are being devised by the warmachine to subjugate righteousness. It isimpossible to predict what might happenon the morrow.
