A recap of the vestry meeting held
April 16 via Zoom:
Stewardship: Ben Bruno shared
some great news! Pledges are up
and we now have 63 people
pledging over $201K/year. This is
an increase from the past two
years and we are getting closer to
our budget needs. Thank you so
much for your support and gener-
osity
Senior Warden report: Don Morris
and other Senior Wardens in
churches without permanent rec-
tors have been meeting with
Bishop Susan Haynes on a weekly
basis. Don provided a synopsis of
some of what they discussed. The
Bishop said she will reopen
churches based on what scientists
and medical professionals advise,
rather than politicians. She also
has assured Don that she will
come to St. Luke’s to worship with
us when that happens and will
make that a priority on her sched-
ule.
Engagement and Communica-
tions: Maureen Benway reported
that Anne Larrick has been spear-
heading a working group that is
working on an update to our web-
site. That group plans to apply for
a grant (of up to $1,000) from the
Diocese to help cover the cost of
hiring a web developer. A website
designer has been identified who
will help us for a very reasonable
price. Special thanks to Dolores
Gennari who has done a fantastic
job updating our existing website.
If you haven't visited it lately,
please go to stlukespowhatan.org
to take a look.
Junior Warden: Adam Wojcicki
reported that there are no current
maintenance issues, and that we
will be changing the lockbox
code on a regular basis for in-
creased security as part of our
Safe Church program.
The vestry also discussed updat-
ing our vision and mission state-
ments. The consensus was that
with all the changes we have
been and are going through, that
the current statements may no
Vestry News Maureen Moslow-Benway
longer be representative of the
message St. Luke's wishes to
convey. Once we're all back to-
gether, we will revisit this.
Our next vestry meeting will be
held on Thursday, May 21st--
hopefully face-to-face. All are
welcome to attend.
Stay safe, stay well, and stay con-
nected.

Food for Thought
The excerpts below are from online sermons or meditations that Kathy and Laura have shared with us over the past several weeks.
It’s Easter.
But it doesn’t look like it
It doesn’t feel like it.
It doesn’t even smell like it.
But it’s Easter anyway!
Think for a moment.
That first Easter. It was Easter, but nobody knew it.
The Bible says, early in the morning, Mary Magdalen got up and went to the tomb while it was still dark. It was dark and she wasn’t exactly sure how to get there, but she went anyway. She didn’t know for sure that the rumors about soldiers, having been posted to guard the tomb to prevent anyone from doing anything, she didn’t know if that was true. She knew that there was a stone rolled in front of the entrance of the tomb. She got up and went anyway.
And so Mary and those women got up in the dark, not knowing for sure what was going on, just doing what love does. Love can’t change the fact of death, but love can live through it and thereby defeat death. And so they got up and went to the tomb just to do
what love does.
Easter had happened anyway, and maybe that is the way of God, that somehow behind the scenes, in ways that we may not fully behold at the time, God is there. And not just there, but somehow working in the midst, even of the mess.
From Bishop Michael Curry’s Easter Sermon April 12, 2020 (Full text here)
With Jesus at our center, let
us NOT be what we were
As Winston Churchill was working to form the United Nations after WWII, he famously said, “Never let a good crisis go to waste”. From something bad came something good. The worldwide pandemic which has caused churches to close to public worship is indeed a crisis. And one that presents the church with oppor-tunities.
I have seen several webinars and articles about "restarting" our churches after the crisis. But I have not seen a good, sound conversation about NOT restarting our churches. Rather, let us relaunch our congrega-tions. Let us be nimble church plants in gorgeous 150-year old buildings. Let us dream a new church into be-ing, one that is not modeled on the way church was. Rather, on what it could be.
What if church services were held on other days than Sundays and thus allow more flexibility for families whose weekends are over-scheduled?
…. What if, now that we know we can do it, we used live streaming and
other digital tools to reach a larger audience, that can become a new way of congregating?
And what if, as we come back, we don't reflexively re-start everything we had been doing but first checked
to make sure that everything we do moving forward is part of our mis-sion? …. The bottom line is this: let us not let the opportunity created by this crisis go to waste. Let us take it and run with it.
I'll finish with this (think of it as an iron-clad guarantee): as we dream a new church into being, even falling along the way, as long as we are prayerful, open, loving, discerning, and always looking for Jesus in what we do, we'll be fine.

From TRY TANK April 2020
What I do not pray for is for things
to go “back to normal.” I say this be-cause I believe we are being called into new ways of being. We have learned that we are intricately con-nected and that we really depend on one another. We have come to appre-ciate the true value of servant leaders. We have seen the relative useless-ness of status, celebrity, and material obsession. Our values and priorities are being right sized and clarified like never before.
I do not believe that a pandemic is God’s will, nor do I believe God is do-ing all of this to get a point across. Suffering is part of life, and God gives us the gift of redemptive love as light
in any present darkness. While there are many unanswerable questions, there is the saving proclamation that
Christ is risen and alive for all eter-nity. That tells us that God is for us, and God is with us.
From This Week @ Emmanuel ,The Rev. John Taliaferro Thomas, Rector of Emmanuel Episcopal in Green-wood, Virginia.
O Lord, our hearts break and we offer our unceasing
prayers for those who battle the corona virus, for the fami-
lies of those who have lost the fight, and for those who are
facing unemployment or had their incomes significantly re-
duced. We give thanks for and ask for your protection upon
all health care workers, care givers for the elderly and the
sick, first responders, grocery store staffs and suppliers, and
for all who put themselves at risk for the benefit of others.
And we ask for your guidance and blessings upon each of us
as we face our fears and the uncertainties of days ahead.
Grant us strength, grant us courage, grant us wisdom, grant
us compassion, and grant us peace, through Jesus Christ,
our Lord. Amen
The churches are empty - but so is
the tomb,
And Jesus is victor over death, doom, and gloom.
So this year at Easter, let this be our prayer,
As the virus still rages all around, everywhere.
May the world see hope when it looks at God's people.
May the world see the church is not a building or steeple.
May the world find Faith in Jesus' death and resurrection,
May the world find Joy in a time of dejection.
May 2020 be known as the year of survival,
But not only that - Let it start a revival

Many of our high school and college students are currently home with some time on their hands and no way of getting a job. Some of us have outdoor chores we could pay them to do, such as mowing, mulch-ing, setting out bedding plants, wash-ing cars, outdoor painting - a wide variety of things that would not in-volve direct contact with people. Suggested payment is $10.00 per hour minimum, more depending on the difficulty of the job. If you would

Helpers for Hire
The church office used Realm to send your first quarter statement of giving to your email address. Also included was a letter drafted from Ben Bruno. Ben and the Vestry thank you for your pledge and your efforts to keep it current. Our number of pledges has pla-teaued at 63 households totaling $201,295.96. Both of these numbers exceeds the value of the last two years!
Please continue to make your pledge, whether weekly or monthly using Realm. It is easy for you and the church staff. I certainly don’t rec-ommend mailing a check. Simply enter the routing number and ac-count number from your checking account into Realm. I look forward to the time that our church is reopened for Sunday ser-vices! Blessings to you, Ben Bruno

The St. Luke’s Prescription Page 9
In spite of the Coronavirus, members
of St. Luke’s are helping their
neighbors in our community. Five of
us are continuing to provide dinner
five days a week for one of our Sen-
ior Lunch friends who is 88 years old
and lives alone. Unfortunately, we
can no longer visit with our friend
when we deliver his meals, but we
keep in touch via phone calls. We
are making phone calls weekly to all
of those who usually have attended
our monthly luncheons to check on
them and to see if they need our as-
sistance. Two of those friends have
suffered with the virus, but thanks be
to God, are now recovering.
Lisa and Tim Benusa, owners of The
Mill at Fine Creek, decided early on
that since they could not use sup-
plies ordered in advance for planned
weddings to be held at The Mill, they
would distribute what they could to
neighbors in need. Seventy-six peo-
ple are receiving a grocery bag
weekly filled with toilet paper, paper
towels, sugar, flour, butter, eggs,
fresh fruit and/or vegetables, home-
made cookies and muffins, rolls, and
at least one delicious entrée made at
The Mill by Lisa and members of her
family. Some of the items in the
bags have been made by and/or do-
nated by members of St. Luke’s. Six
ladies from our church have been
delivering the bags to some of our
Senior Lunch friends, and the others
are going to clients of the Free Clinic
of Powhatan. If you would like to
help with this project, please call
Connie Harriss at 794-5642.
As always, John and Susan Joseph
and Gwen Boykin are collecting non-
perishable food items from the rear of
the Parish Hall to be delivered to
Backpacks of Love and to the
Powhatan Coalition of Churches’
Food Pantry. Several checks have
been received from parishioners to
help cover the shortfall in these times
of increased need. If you would like
to make a monetary contribution,
please contact John or Gwen. In the
meantime, please continue to help by
dropping off needed food, paper
products, and dog/cat food for pickup
at the rear of the Parish Hall. St.
Luke’s has delivered a check for
$500 to each of the charitable organi-
zations from our Outreach Funds.
Outreach Continues to Respond Connie Harriss
Many of our talented parishioners are
making and distributing face masks to
our friends and neighbors.
Ongoing outreach occurs behind the
scenes every month as Laurel
Harrelson sends birthday cards to all
62 of our Senior Lunch friends through-
out the year as well as get well cards.
Laurel also sends cards to our parish-
ioners and other friends of St. Luke’s
upon request. Give her a call if you
would like to help with postage, etc.
Thank you to all who are helping make
the pandemic less stressful for others.
Thank you to those of you who are
helping in so many ways and exposing
yourselves to the virus in order to do
so.
As Thom Estes puts it, “We are Chris-
tian Soldiers”.

Keep Your Pledge Current THANK
YOU to everyone who has been keeping current with your pledges as the financial obligations of St. Luke's continue. You can contribute online in Realm or mail your check to the church.
Backpacks of Love This week St Luke’s Church members donated 48 food items to Backpacks of Love! Our total for the year is 2867 items, plus a $100 do-nation. Thank you so much! This will greatly help hungry school children now at home and likely without the
meals they would normally receive at school Even though the church is closed, each day we are picking up food items left at the back of the parish hall by 4 pm. Food donations may also be made at the Backpacks of Love Pantry located at 3035 Lower Hill Road in Powhatan, and Herff Jones at 2020 New Dorset Road (Tues.- Fri., 9 - 4:30). Or dollar donations may be made at GoFundMe, and the Backpacks website https://backpacksoflove.myshopify.com/ Food items currently needed, especially the proteins: peanut butter (16 oz. jars only), nabs or crackers, small bags of chips or Gold Fish, Ravioli, bottles of water, tuna fish, Vienna sau-sages, ramen noodles, pop tarts, fruit cups or pudding Again, thank you St. Luke’s Church members for helping school children who need food during the Coronavirus pandemic. From Susan and John Joseph
Watch over thy children, O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may thy peace which passeth understanding abide all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
