Suspension of Church Activities Extended

Suspension of all activities on our church premises will continue until state and community leaders, and health professionals indicate it is safe enough to resume such gatherings.

The Worship Committee, under the leadership of Mike McNeill, will continue to livestream Sunday messages at 10:45 am on our church Facebook page.

The Church will continue to make Communion kits available for the Lord's Supper at home on every Communion Sunday. The Lord's Supper is scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd, and Sunday, June 7th.

First Presbyterian Church of Magnolia, Arkansas The Minutes for the Stated Meeting of the Session

Tuesday, March 24th, 2020, 6:00 p.m.

The Session of First Presbyterian Church of Magnolia, Arkansas meet for its monthly stated meeting on Tuesday, March 24th, 2020. Dr. Boumtje called the meeting to order, declared a quorum present, and opened the meeting with prayer at 6:00 p.m. The following members were present: Moderator, Dr. Pierre Boumtje, Sue Joyce and (by Zoom video), Katherine Phillips, Ricky Murphy, James Reddell, Lea West and Kay Whitehead. Mike McNeill had an excused absence. Martine Boumtje was a guest, representing the Deacons, and Kathy Gean was present to present the Treasurer’s and Youth Reports. Session Devotional: Katherine Phillips gave a timely devotional on change and feeling lost. The reading encouraged praying, being creative, appreciating what you do have, and leaning on God. Treasurer’s report: Kathy Gean discussed the treasurer’s report and Session voted to accept the report as information. Pastor Search Committee: Kathy Gean reported that the PNC met Monday the 23rd of March. There is a candidate who we are interested in and he is interested in us. Joe Hill and his committee will confer via Zoom with his Presbytery committee in Ohio. Following those meetings, it was suggested to our committee that the candidate could be brought here as an interim. Youth Director’s Report: Kathy reported that, due to the nationwide virus pandemic, most Youth activities will be cancelled for the next few weeks. Approval of the minutes: The minutes of the, February 25th, 2020, Stated Session Meeting were reviewed, and a correction was made. Sue Joyce moved, and Susan Dees seconded, that the corrected minutes be approved, and Session voted accordingly Correspondence and requests: Dr. Boumtje announced that he had received a thank you message from the church in Cameroon regarding our church’s recent check. He also relayed an update on the virus in Arkansas. Dr. Boumtje shared a communication regarding the scheduled June Presbytery meeting here at First Presbyterian Church of Magnolia. Sue Joyce moved that the June meeting be cancelled (due to the virus situation) and moved to October. Katherine Phillips seconded and Session approved accordingly. Pastor’s Report: Dr Boumtje and the Session discussed the current virus pandemic and government and church recommendations on how to manage meetings. Susan Dees moved, and Rick Murphy seconded, that all church meetings be cancelled until mid-April. Any further cancellation decisions can be made by a called Session meeting. The Session approved accordingly. The church secretary will send out notices to the congregation that the Sanctuary can be opened for prayer by request. Rick Murphy moved, and Sue Joyce seconded, that the congregation be notified that pledges can be mailed to the church. It was also recommended that Cindy investigate providing self-addressed envelopes to the congregation.

1)Pastoral Notes: Health Dr. Boumtje reported on the health status of several parishioners, Alice Bartushock, T.G. and

Katherine Connelly, Susan Dees, Babe Knowles, and Ray Uhrich. 2)Dates to Remember: Due to the virus emergency, the following events are cancelled: Easter

Sunday Easter Egg Hunt, Area Agency on Aging Caregivers Workshop on April 24th. The

Empowering Commissioned Pastors Conference at Canyon Creek Presbyterian in May has been postponed until October. The Church office will be closed on April 10th for Good Friday.

The following services will be held via video over Facebook: April 5th – Palm Sunday, April 9th – Maundy Thursday Communion service, and April 12th – Easter Sunday service. Dr. Larry Kelso, retired Methodist Minister, will be the visiting minister on Easter Sunday and the remaining April Sundays

Committee Reports:

Administration-----------------------did not meet Deacons-------------------------------Martine Boumtje, chairman, reported that she will be Deacon of the month in March, Kathy Cole will be Deacon of the month in April Fellowship-----------------------------Kay Whitehead reported that plans were finalized for Spring Potluck on March 15th Discipleship---------------------------Susan Dees reported that Kathy Gean had purchased a new TV for the Nursery and a DVD player for the Women’s Sunday School class. VBS will be June 15th-18th. The search continues for a male helper for the Youth program. Worship-------------------------------Randy Click will be pulpit supply for the month of March, Dr. Larry Kelso will provide pulpit supply for April. Mission--------------------------------Katherine Phillips reported that the committee will continue to provide the 3rd Tuesday meals to the Southern Christina Mission residents. During this emergency time, the meals will be ordered and delivered to the shelter. Committee members will not be serving the meals.

Assignments for April 2020 (4 Sundays and Maundy Thursday) Deacon of the month for April: Kathy Cole Deacon of the month for May: David DeSeguirant Wednesday meals for April and May: cancelled Leaders in Worship: These assignments were cancelled since all in-person services are suspended through April. New Business: There was discussion on implementing online giving. Old Business: Todd Connelly and Todd smith received a communication from the Little Rock Attorney regarding First Presbyterian’s appeal and the status of the courts during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Court of Appeals building is currently closed but the courts are in operation and continue to issue opinions. Communications are by phone, email, text and video conferencing. The letter is attached to the newsletter.

There being no further business, Sue Joyce moved to adjourn, Susan Dess seconded, and Session voted accordingly. The meeting was adjourned with prayer by Dr. Boumtje at 7:20 pm.
