There was never a day or a moment, on duty or off duty, that he would not go the extra mile. Building Community Heart

QuoteYes indeed when collecting information entries can be made by mistake and entries in particular for purposes of scanning have to fit neatly in the blocks designed for responses. At times enumerators ask questions that should have been skipped based on the responses made in the preceding questions. As a matter of cause, enumerators check their work every day and so are their supervisors. There are 108 000 of these enumerators and 25 000 supervisors spread out in the streets of South Africa. We have 128 offices. The office of the enumerator is the street and all corrections and edits that have to be made are in the street and no where else.I have collected information from field and I have made mistakes in recording and in my own space I would correct the wrong entries.

That is what editing in field achieves, yet this is not enough because before coding of questionnaires further editing in the comfort of office also gets undertaken. Further range and consistency checks are made in batch after data capture and batch correction is made in the privacy of a machine. Finally a clean dataset is produced. so there is absolutely nothing untoward with enumerators with their pencils and erasers. there is no motivation to change any ones information except to gather data that is consistent.Pali LehohlaStatistician-GeneralStatistics South Africa170 Andries StreetDe Bruyn Park BuildingPretoria.Unquote

A couple of incidents that occurred in Atlasville on Monday 14 November 2011

has prompted me to bring the following to your attention.Firstly, it was noted early that morning that someone had left both blue and red bottle tops outside some residences in Atlasville. It is well known that the criminal element will leave ‘signs’ outside a house to indicate that these are potential targets. In the early afternoon that day, we received two reports of one white male and one black male in a white bakkie trying to gain entry to homes on the pretext of being there to do

plumbing work.Thankfully the people of Atlasville are ‘clued up’ and entry was refused. Nevertheless an alert was sent out.We appeal to residents everywhere to make sure you check the outside of your property on a daily basis and remove any items that should not be there. These can come in any shape or form, such as sticks/twigs placed in a strategic manner, empty plastic bags or even balloons tied to a tree.Let’s send a clear message to the criminal element that we are ‘on our toes’ and they need to move elsewhere.

On Monday 14 November 2011, an armed robbery occurred at Bredell Post Office involving six suspects. Following this robbery a general look out was given to SAP and Metro vehicles. Our usual fine "A Team" from Eastern Region Tracing Unit were travelling on Benoni Road when they observed one of the vehicles given in the lookout passed them in the direction of Benoni. They immediately made a U-turn and a pursuit ensued. The suspects were finally apprehended between Hospital Road and Webb street on Great North Road. North Rand Flying Squad also supplied back up. On further investigation it was found that the vehicle used by the suspects was also hi-jacked in the Johannesburg area. So a great success for all concerned.

Following The PCN’s recent article regarding cable theft, a meeting was held with the Station Commander as

well as representatives of the CPF.The incident in question is currently under investigation and we hope to be able to report back to the community in the near future. In the meantime, a further incident occurred on Wednesday 9 November 2011 and we are pleased to announce that members of the Crystal Park SAPS were successful in making an arrest. On behalf of the community we would like to say well done to all involved. Keep up the good work.We received the following report from Communications Officer, Tryna Wolmarans. On Wednesday 2011-11-09, officers from Crystal Park SAPS were patrolling in the area when they saw smoke, and followed a Precinct patrol vehicle to that location.Upon arrival at an address in Geldenhuys St, they discovered a suspicious looking vehicle. After searching the vehicle, they found Telkom cable that had been reported stolen.

One person was arrested for being in possession of stolen property. The suspect was detained and charged at Crystal Park SAPS, and the vehicle used was seized and handed in at Crystal Park SAPS. The station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Belinda Motaung said that she is pleased with the performance of her members.

BeginnersBeginners imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Mélanie Laurent) only months after his father Hal (Christopher Plummer) has passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who - following 44 years of marriage - came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. The upheavals of Hal's new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they'd ever been able to be. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humor, and hope that his father taught him

Artist Review

Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy lead an all-star cast in Tower Heist, a comedy caper about working stiffs who seek revenge on the Wall Street swindler who stiffed them. After the workers at a luxury Central Park condominium discover the penthouse billionaire has stolen their retirement, they plot the ultimate revenge: a heist to reclaim what he took from themFunny movie, great cast. It's a bit like Ocean's Eleven. A group of ex-employers led by Josh (Ben Stiller) break into the Tower to steal millions from its owner. Owner Shaw stole their pension fund and caused their friend and colleague Henderson to jump in front of a train. Slide (Eddie Murphy) is a crook that enlists to teach them how to steal. All the interactions with Slide are hilarious. Side splitting at times with a message proving dishonesty doesn’t pay, at the end of the day, the nice guy usually wins!

Shadowclub got serious in early 2009 when, after a brief breakup, Klawansky’s long time friend, Louis Roux, replaced the band’s original bassist. At school in Johannesburg, the pair had played together in garage bands, covering Radiohead and Stereophonics songs. Moolman, meanwhile, has spent most of his teens in England, where he was writing songs first on piano, then guitar. He returned to Jo’burg aged 18. The new Shadowclub line-up picked up a following in Jo’burg and Durban by playing clubs and handing out CDs of a set of demos they had recorded in a day. Six months ago, they signed to South African label, Just Music, and got to work on a new batch of songs. Recorded earlier this year and mastered in the States at Magic Garden Studios by Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Jane’s Addiction), ‘Guns & Money’ contains both reworked songs from those early demos and new tracks, mostly written by Moolman.

Shadowclub

Shadowclubs album " Guns & Money ". Cover shown above, was released in July and had huge success locally and internationally. The band is excited about their newest release "Good morning killer" which is enjoying plenty radio play on all of SA's top radio stations, sitting at no. 15 on a popular SA chart currently, it seems this group have much more up their sleeves to entertain their adoring fans and are finding alot of new ones in the process. Well worth checking these guys out!

Assertiveness involves the extent to which a person is able and willing to express needs, thoughts, feelings and opinions

and stand up for their own rights and, in doing so, to influence the thoughts and behaviour of others. Non-assertion involves violating one’s own rights by failing to express honest thoughts and feelings, or doing so in such a way that they might easily be disregarded. Many people find it difficult to disagree or say “no”. They are often afraid to upset others, or they worry about what others might think. People often describe themselves as “people pleasers” as if this is some character flaw. That is not so. However, we are often in interaction with people who do not consider others, so it is necessary to make one’s own limits known in a way that does not harm the relationship. On the other hand, in contrast to “people pleasers,” many people find it hard to stand up for themselves without becoming aggressive. Neither over-compliant behaviour nor aggression is useful in our relationships. By learning assertive skills and increasing your negotiation skills, you increase your ability to handle conflict.

A person with low assertion tends to remain quiet rather than expressing an opinion or want. They tend to avoid risks. They are tentative in expressing their viewpoint. They often procrastinate or delay action. They delay making decisions. They have the strengths of being humble, supportive and listening to others. Assertive people are inclined to give instructions. They speak up and are willing to take risks. They state opinions with conviction. They are decisive, self-confident and action orientated. Here are some examples of assertive behaviour. See if these statements are true of you:I have confidence in my own judgment.I let others know what I’m feeling.

I am willing to debate and discuss ideas and opinions even if I disagree with theI insist that my spouse or roommate take on a fair share of household chores. At work, if I think I am being asked to do more than I possibly can, I object. If someone asks me a favour which is inconvenient for me to carry out, I tell them so.If a person has borrowed money (or a book, garment, thing of value) and is overdue in returning it, I mention it.I insist that my mechanic, repairman, etc. make repairs, adjustments or replacements which are her/his responsibility. When I discover merchandise is faulty, I return it.I speak out in protest when someone takes my place in lineIf someone keeps kicking or bumping my chair at a movie or a lecture, I ask the person to stop. When I need help, I ask for it.

Being assertive means communicating in a way that is not rude or aggressive. Aggression involves standing up for personal rights, expressing thoughts, feelings or beliefs in an inappropriate way which violates the rights of others. Aggression involves attack and blame and results in a win/lose situation. It implies self-centeredness (“I” and “me”), threatening and manipulative behaviour, and blaming of others and events for failures. Improving assertiveness.Learn to give feedback to others, using an I message. Here is how to construct an I-message. There are three parts to the message:1. Tell what is happening.2. Tell what you feel.3. Explain why you feel that way. e.g. “When you don’t call, I feel worried because I don’t know where you are.”

It uses these words:1. When “When you don’t call,2. I feel I feel worried3. because I don’t know where you are.”These messages give feedback without blaming or attacking the other person. Other important points about assertiveness have been highlighted by Charoux 2000, pp. 80-83:• Improve your tone of voice – is it firm,

decisive, cutting? Record it on a tape and play it back. When was the tone assertive or not assertive?

• Improve what you say – are the words you use communicating an assertive message? Which words are not assertive? Why? When did they become less assertive? What could you have said differently that could make your words less assertive?

• Watch your body language – learn how to walk, sit and speak more assertively. Look people in the eye, stand tall, pull your shoulders back and keep your head straight.

• Learn how not to feel threatened by very assertive and aggressive individuals – when there is a problem, act on it quickly: don’t postpone in the hope that it will disappear.

• Watch an assertive person in action – what does she or he say or do that comes across as assertive?

• Learn how to confront tough issues head on. In the long run, nobody wins by avoiding issues that must be addressed and resolved. Be prepared, however, to face up to the “people” side when doing so – there will be reactions and emotions in such a confrontation.

• Before you take a stand and confront an issue head on, look at yourself and decide how strongly, and for how long, you are willing to stand firm. How far can you go? How much of a compromise are you willing to make? What is your bottom line?

• Learn how not to get angry when asserting yourself and not to grovel or plead. One cannot be both assertive and aggressive, or both assertive and subservient!

• Learn how to use the so-called “fogging technique”. This implies not challenging

criticism in an aggressive manner, but just saying, “You could be right, but…” and then repeating your original assertion. This technique also helps you to accept criticism without necessarily losing your rights.

Like any new skill it takes time and practice to master being assertive. Start with smaller issues, where you feel safer expressing yourself and then move on to tougher issues. Keep your voice calm and firm and hold on to good manners, watching your body language and say what is on your mind. It is worth the effort. Reference Nel J 2001. Advanced interpersonal skills. Increasing your Assertiveness

T h e 2 0 11 / 2 0 1 2 BNCP (Benoni North Community Precinct) committee is in place and a new approach has been adopted by them. Basically, a

much tougher stance will be implemented towards service accountability. This step has been taken to ensure that all service providers to the Precinct react and give responsible answers to questions being raised by the community. The Chairman, Mervyn Manning, said that this would apply to everyone answerable to the community, such as SAPS, Community Police Forum (CPF), Ekurhuleni Metro Council, as well as their own management company, CMS.The committee has formed sub committees for the relevant areas covered by BNCP, in order to react quicker to issues of concern in the areas of Northvilla, Brentwood Park, Benoni North, Norton’s Home Estate and Benoni Small Farms. The Small Farms area already has a very active community structure which is doing a great job, not only on crime related issues but also other municipal and social issues.Whilst the resources of SAPS are sometimes stretched and the services they carry out leave a lot to be desired from time to time, it is our intention to make them more accountable but at the same time working with them to assist in the fight against crime.Manning said that they will also be working closer with CPF structures, and hope that a

good working understanding can benefit all of the community, as well as strengthening the process of accountability, thereby enhancing performance.BNCP has also initiated a trust fund in order to help out financially, a patrolman of BNCP who, due to a shooting incident with criminals, had landed up, sadly, being paralysed from the neck down. A unanimous decision was made at our AGM in October, by the members of BNCP, to contribute to the trust fund. Whilst the finality of legal documentation for the trust is nearing completion, Mervyn Manning urges all those people who wish to donate funds for this worthy cause to contact himself on 082-455-4555 or email him on [email protected] members need to understand the Precinct concept and embrace the idea that members of the community drive the Precinct committee, who are elected by them, and the committee is mandates to address the concerns of that community. The chairman emphasised the fact that only the community, and no commercial business enterprise, is involved other than supplying services. People who do not understand the concept should guard against commenting and causing dissension amongst the community for their own agenda.Any member of the community can become a member of BNCP, irrespective of which security company they are contracted to for their alarm system. All residents in the area are welcome to join. Support your Community Precinct.
