The Practice of Lectio Divina
Definition:Lectio divina (spiritual reading) is a dynamic approach to praying with the Bible for our
faith development. It first involves hearing Gods Word read aloud in our current lifesituation and then responding back. Lectio is like reading a love letter from God where
we listen carefully to al that is being said, noticing words, phrases and the emotion and
cognitive movements that arise within us. We are receptive to an intimate encounter
with God that will hopefully bring about transformation.
Background:
John Cassian of the 5th century first mentionedlectio. It became more popular through
the 6th century through the Rule of St. Benedict. As increased emphasis on the analysis
and theology of Scripture evolved during the 12th through 16th century, lectio was
suppressed and compartmentalized and eventually marginalized from the mainstream
of Christendom. In the last 50 years, the practice oflectio has been rediscovered.
Process for our lectio experience:
1. PREPARATION through SILENCEBe comfortable. Quiet your mind and focusing attention on God. Dedicate this time
to Him. Then, ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you, draw you close to Him and plant
His Word in your heart.
2. FIRST READING: Read a selected passage from Scripture. While reading the textaloud, listen attentively for a particular word or phrase that seems to be given to
you that catches your attention. Follow with a minute of silence.
3. SECOND READING: Read passage slowly once again, followed by two minutes ofsilence. During this second reading, listen to discoverhow this passage touches
your life today. In the period of silence, consider possibilities or receive a sensory
impression.
4. THIRD READING: During this reading, listen to what the Spirit through this passagemay be inviting you to do or be. Ponder it during the period of silence.
5. After the lectio experience ask yourself What did the Holy Spirit bring to yourattention through Gods Word?
