INTRODUCTION Jane Austen and Charlotte Bront are perhaps the most
famous women writers of the Victorian era and both their
works, Pride and Prejudice andJane Eyre areconsidered literary masterpieces. In their novels, Austen and
Bront, are interested in presenting strong, independent female
protagonists in a world where womans role is dependent on
men. Even so, the writers present these themes in
different ways.I. Social Time Frame

of work and social expectations.
The existing social caste system is viewed
throughout Janes life. Throughout the

Reeds wealth contrasts Janes poorheritage.
Like Elizabeth, Jane is very independent
and follows her heart to make decisions. Womens main goal is to marry a well offman and climb up the social ladder.
Mens social advancement laid in the
military, church or law.
Marriages are arranged for material reasons.
Social caste (prejudice) - The division of
social classes based on wealth and
connections. This leads the richer families to
believe those who are poorer are in turn
inferior. Ex: the Bingley sisters air ofsuperiority towards the Bennett family eventhough they were not poor. Elizabeth is ahead of her time; she is a more
independent woman than those surrounding
her, with her own ideas and morals, not to be
made a fool off by others wealthier than her.Ex: When she defies Lady Catherine deBourgh.SOCIAL TIME FRAME - VICTORIAN ERA

is adopted by her uncle.

promises him to take care of Jane, but is cruel
to her and treats her as an outcast. When young she lives with her cousins Eliza,
Georgiana and John. Her aunt tends toalienate her from them. Nevertheless John
takes up any opportunity to degrade Jane.
When leaving Thornfield she is taken in by
the Rivers siblings (Mary, Diana and St.
John). She then finds out they are her cousins
and divides her inheritance evenly between
all of them.
In the end, Jane marries Rochester. They soon
have a son and continue caring for Adele.

rich. Mrs. Bennet is an overbearing mother, consumed
with marrying off her five daughters, and as a
result is constantly embarrassing Elizabeth. Mr.
Bennet, on the other hand, can be veryindifferent on occasion, yet has a close
