GREAT DANE SPOTLIGHT

Summer heat brings challenges forcompanies that deliver food in a

reefer. Every time a reefer door opensis another opportunity for warm air toenter the trailer, which can threatenfood safety and put stress on the cool-ing unit. That’s why it’s so important thatthe reefer has safe and efficient doorsto keep the cold air in when closed.

Great Dane reefer doors providedurable air-tight seals that can save youmoney in the long run. Whether youare choosing a rear door, side door orinside bulkhead door, Great Dane canhelp you choose the right one for your needs.

Rear doors take a beatingLoading and unloading cargo can damage a reefer door, so it better bedurable. And when it is closed, it musthave an efficient seal. Great Daneoffers tough all-aluminum swing doorsthat are sealed to eliminate moistureintrusion and feature internal lateralbraces for added strength, improvingdurability and maintaining a flat, smooth exterior. The all-aluminum swingdoors have a unique gasket design witha triple seal to lock in cold air. The dooropening has an integral PVC thermalbarrier, which prevents the innermostgasket from freezing to the rear frameand reduces heat transfer.

The right reeferdoor can saveyou money

Tri-fold rear doors improve efficiency Tri-fold rear doors are another option that minimizes cold air loss andimproves driver safety. These rear doors are constructed like bi-folddoors, but instead of two equal-width doors, there are three doors.Food service companies often choose tri-fold doors so that they canhand deliver products through the center door and down a rear center pullout ramp or lift gate. The other two doors remain closed during theentire delivery event, and limit warm air entering the reefer.

Great Dane 5

Side Doors improve safetyCurbside loading and unloading can be a safer alternative to using a rear door. Great Dane’s unique sidedoor design is available in multiple heights, widths, andlocations to provide quick and easy access to cargo. A unique blade lock design applies pressure evenlyaround the door for a complete perimeter compressionseal of the door to help hold compartment temperatures. The low-profile design of this lock eliminates protrudinghinges and lock rods, protecting the side doors from damage. For more than 35 years, Great Dane customershave chosen this proven door lock for its reliability. Thelow profile blade lock and hinges, which can be configured to meet customer needs, are also more aerodynamic than standard hinges.

BulkheadsIf your loads require more than one temperature zone, consider movable bulkheads, which allow multi-temp compartmentalization. They can be positioned quickly tofacilitate various loads and backhauls. A flat, smooth lining on the sides and ceiling provides excellent surfacefor divider bulkhead sealing. Adding an access door inthe bulkhead makes it easy to access adjacent compartments with different temperatures.

Flat Floors For palletized loads, flat floors have several benefits overother floor types. Flat floors allow for better temperaturecontrol as moveable bulkheads have a tight-fitting sealacross the flat floor surface. Also, delivery of products inand out of trailers with small-wheeled, hand-pushed cartsis easier to operate than on ducted floors. Flat floors arenot as prone to collect debris or snag pallets.

Strong and durable, Great Dane’s flat floors have anincreased rating from 16K to 18K. Composite sills supportthe floor continuously for maximum support and areanchored by sill screws that employ an organic multi-layercoating system that resists corrosion. An impact-resistantthermoplastic sub-pan completes the floor design creatingan extremely durable floor.

FSMA UpdateFocus on food safety in transitThe Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) outlines preventive control guidelines for foodstorage and transportation. In a nutshell, themajor impacts for carriers are in the SanitaryTransportation of Food (STF) rules. FSMA requiresthat perishable foods are transported at correcttemperatures and that those temperatures arerecorded and can be verified. According to STF,a written agreement/contract must be signedbetween the shipper and the carrier or assignedthird party who will have to assume the followingresponsibilities:

• Liability• Temperature control• Training• Record retention• Sanitary condition• Written procedures• Pre-cool requirements

Equipment SpecsFSMA requires that carriers supply vehicle andtransportation equipment that meets requirementsspecified by the shipper in accordance with the mandate.

These issues are important to Great Dane. Wehave developed the ThermoGuard advanced lining to resist moisture and loss of efficiency dueto foam outgassing. We have eliminated woodfrom refrigerated trailers, because wood acts asa wick and absorbs moisture. We use lightweightadhesives to reduce the need for heavier fasteners.

Great Dane engineers are also working on several technologies to help carriers comply withSTF rules. These include:

• Reefer linings to reduce risk of bacteri-al contamination

• Integrated wireless data managementand telematics

• Increased thermal efficiency• Corrosion resistant materials • Weight reduction • Improved watertight integrity

Protecting Cargo over the RoadArctic Express is committed to delivering its customers’products safely. The Great Dane trailers the companyuses are equipped with air ride suspension that "dramat-ically reduce the potential for cargo damage by provid-ing a smoother ride and tends to balance and equalizethe trailer load,” Durst said.

Consistent Cooling Maintaining interior temperatures as low as -20ºF is crit-ical to protect customers’ cargo. Arctic Express spec’s itstrailers with Great Dane’s ThermoGuard lining forgreater thermal efficiency, which helps cooling units last

longer. This lining helps maintain insulation performance as the trailer ages, allowing Arctic Expressto extend the useful life of its trailers and increasing itsreturn on investment with a higher resale value than trailers with traditional liners.

Added TechnologyAll of the fleet’s new trailers are equipped with telemat-ics technology, Durst said. “This gives Arctic Expresseven greater precision in monitoring and maintainingspecific temperatures to ensure that all of the productswe haul are kept at the exact temperature prescribedby the shipper.”

Dedicated to SafetyArctic Express is dedicated to thesafety of its drivers and the peoplethey share the road with every day.

The company has a SafetyDepartment and participates in several highway safety programs, including Highway Watch, The OhioTrucking Safety Council & TheAmerican Trucking Association.

At Great Dane, we believe that safetyis the key to our success and the success of our customers. We champion the needs of our customersby ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of goods.

Great Dane’s 4-in-1 Back Up AlarmSystem increases safety for driversand pedestrians. The system fea-tures Grote’s new integrated lampthat combines all stop/tail/turn andback-up functions into one industry-standard size lamp. The innovative4-in-1 Back Up Alarm only workswhen the wheels turn backward, does not come on when the trailermoves forward, and is completelyindependent of the ABS system onthe brakes. It is interconnected with

a sealed Grote UBSwire harness. It provides high-levelelectrical protectionfor reverse voltage, over voltage, electri-cal transients andover-heating. The unit isassembled into a theft resistant stainless steel mountingflange and does not require additional mounting holes to be cutor additional brackets.

INSIDE TRACK

The trucking industry has used platooning, or drafting, for years

and is now adding semi-autonomousdriving technology to create level 2truck platooning. It’s likely to be agame changer for highway truck fuel efficiency.

The Texas A&M TransportationInstitute (TTI) has begun phase one ofa project to test level 2 truck platooning and create a concept ofoperations and design. Great Dane isa part of the research and develop-ment, which seeks to demonstrate thesafety benefits, fuel savings and emission reductions achieved byextending vehicle automation tofreight truck platoons.

Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Level 2 truck platooning is an extension of cooperative adaptivecruise control that uses automated

lateral and longitudinal vehicle control, while maintaining a tight formation of vehicles with short following distances. A platoon is ledby a manually driven truck. The drivers of the following truck(s) candisengage from driving tasks andmonitor the system performance.

Research suggests that platooningtechnology can provide a 5 to 20 percent fuel savings, depending onthe gap, speed, number of vehiclesand location of a vehicle within a platoon. Platooning also offers otherbenefits, such as emission reductions, additional vehicle safety features andincreased highway throughput.

Great Dane Participation Great Dane has donated two 48- foottrailers that will be used in the testdemonstration and is also providingtechnical assistance within the

research team. Great Dane engineersparticipated in equipment and calibration tests and a successful public demonstration held early thissummer in Texas.

Ultimately this concept can becomereality when states, the FederalHighway Administration and the U.S.Department of Transportation designate platooning lanes (similar tohigh occupancy vehicle [HOV] commuter lanes in many states) where properly outfitted trucks canjoin to platoon.

Of course, safety is a major concernfor Great Dane and other project participants. As a transportation solutions leader, Great Dane champions the needs of our customersby empowering the safe and efficientdelivery of goods, which some daycould include truck platooning withsemi-autonomous driving technology.

SuperTruck 2Testing innovations to increase fuel economy

The U.S. Department of Energy’s(DOE) program to develop ways

to increase fuel economy for truck-trailer combinations is continuingwith SuperTruck 2. As withSuperTruck 1, Great Dane is on theteam and testing innovations.

In January 2010, the DOEannounced nine projects, totalingmore than $187 million, to improvevehicle fuel efficiency, including forClass 8 heavy-duty trucks and truck-trailer combinations. The SuperTruck 1(SP1) and SuperTruck 2 (SP2) programs focus on research anddevelopment to increase fuel economy as outlined by the DOE,specifically to increase the freight tonefficiency measured in ton-miles/gallon.

The goals are measured against a2009 baseline truck-trailer fuel economy. While SP1 is completeand SP2 is just beginning, both programs provide data and identifytechnology to help OEMs complywith federal Green House Gas(GHG 2) regulations scheduled to gointo effect fully in 2027.

For SP1, truck manufacturers focusedmore on engines and truck fuel efficiency. Great Dane's participationincluded producing a lightweightcomponent trailer.

For SP2, Great Dane will partnerwith Cummins-Peterbilt, Eaton,Bridgestone, Meritor and fleet customer Walmart. This next program includes more suppliers, and requires the truck-trailer units tooperate as a system to achieve

greater savings through aerodynam-ics and weight reduction.

The SP2 team submitted its application to the DOE in May, andcontract awards are anticipated inSeptember 2016. The project has a60-month timeline. Great Dane willwork to deliver a 53-foot Walmartfleet dry van trailer that weighs3,500 pounds less than the trailerused in SP1. The target trailer weightis 11,950 pounds, including allaerodynamic devices.

The trailer will likely include the latestaerodynamic add-on devices, suchas “active aero devices” that adjustto ideal position based on vehiclespeed and wind. It may also have afront wall geometry developed inconcert with Peterbilt to close thegap between truck and trailer.

Six fleet customers who partici-pated in a Fleet Forum during

Great Dane’s Aftermarket Parts andService Conference (APSC) in Mayemphasized the importance ofgood customer service and communication during the trailerrepair process.

The customers included PAMTransport, Dean Foods, MartenTransport, Stevens Transport, ErbGroup and Stage Call.

More than 400 people attendedthe Fleet Forum, including GreatDane leaders, aftermarket managers, full-service dealers, independent dealers and suppliers. The panel participants and audience discussed customer service, technology, networking, outsourcing and procurement.

The APSC was Great Dane’slargest event ever and was hailedas a resounding success by manyparticipants.

Here’s what the Fleet Forum panel participants had to say:

Customer ServiceThe panel participants focused onclear communication and quickrepair service as the hallmarks ofgood customer service. They saidclear communication about therepair work, repair turnaroundtime, and an accurate estimate ofcost to get the trailer back on theroad were examples of what theylooked for in a good aftermarketpartner. Reducing downtime wasdiscussed at length. Downtime ismoney lost; the faster the trailer

gets back on the road the better.Fleets want the service shop to bethe eyes and ears of the fleet man-ager and help the manager knowwhat’s happening to the trailer.

TechnologyTelematics are becoming a com-monly requested spec. Informationsuch as trailer utilization and maintenance information is valu-able and can help business man-agers make decisions that impactthe bottom line.

NetworkFleets say, “Yes, networks all theway.” Being a part of a networkallows a fleet to have a widerrange of coverage. AdvantEDGE,Great Dane’s national aftermarketparts and service network, givesfleets coverage nationwide tomore than 115 locations. The program also streamlines the function of parts and service centers, including ordering, pricing and invoicing.

OutsourcingA lot of large fleets handle regular maintenance and inspections internally, but when major prob-lems arise, such as structural damage, they look for partners tooutsource. Time, quality and costare the top reasons these fleet customers outsource beyond theday-to-day upkeep.

ProcurementThey said they prefer to chooseshops with parts availability, OEMparts and best pricing.AdvantEDGE meets those needs.

The Take-awayGreat Dane customers really value customer service and effective communication. In addition, theywant OEM parts and service thathelp them reduce downtime to minimize lost revenue — and theywant all of this in a network ofproviders who support and protecttheir interests.
