If this continues, I’m not sure if we will be able to retain the pool.” The school now has to front with the funds to clean up the vandals mess. “We are so lucky to be able to have this initiative available to us and on top of power and water costs, we now have to pay for the damage they have caused, which is completely unnecessary.” The Police have been notified and Cris, the Board of Trustees and the students have a clear message for the vandals that came onto their school. “Have some respect for us and stay off our school grounds. You are damaging the future of learning for our children and we won’t tolerate it.” Pictured above are students, Tyreece Tahapehi, Nazareth Hoeta, Marshall Flavell-Minhinnick, Hayden Wilson and Principal, Cris Hull, who are disgusted that vandals have not only damaged school property, but also have tagged their teaching pool.

Emma’s DeskA note from

There aren’t many things that can get me out of bed before my alarm, not even the rugby. I am very fond of my beauty sleep, however, when invited to go whitebaiting before work with my hunter-gatherer husband, it was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse.

I’m never welcomed on these outdoor excursions anymore, as apparently I’m too loud and scare the deer or fish away, or it suddenly becomes a boy’s trip only.

In the small hours of Thurs-day morning, we loaded up the truck and went off-road to the stand along the Waikato River. The tides were right, and there was a good current, I thought we would have a great chance of striking the jackpot. Well, this was not the case.

After nearly two hours of nap-ping on the river bank, check-ing the net and returning the In-anga’s and baby eels (which just so happened to be my job), we scored just enough for several fritters for breakfast.

Hunter-gatherer and I have come to the conclusion that you can try and base your white-baiting on the weather, tides, even moon cycles, but at the end of the day, it really comes down to luck and perseverance.

Hunter-gatherer nearly gave up last season. After spending countless hours on the river-bank without any success, he vowed and declared that La-bour Monday last year would be the last day of whitebaiting for him.

Only 45 minutes later, I get this frantic call asking me to stop what I was doing and drive down with as many buckets and chilly bins as possible. His net was overflowing with white gold and he had to use his lunchbox to try and contain them.

We managed to score a mas-sive 22kg of whitebait and have just finished the last packet on-ly a couple of weeks ago. So you can just imagine how we spent our long weekend in-between work and a wedding.

Speaking of weddings, we have an amazing feature in this week’s issue, starting on page 20. Along with very creative ide-as and wedding tips, we have some amazing local business-es showcasing what they can of-fer right in our own backyard. Be sure to check them out.

This critical infrastructure project is held up in Wellington, not by Auckland Council. The line is owned by Kiwirail and before it can be electrified, it will need to be upgraded and re-signalled, quite apart from the civil works such as the road bridges which will need to be modi-fied or replaced. Auckland Transport will have to rebuild the stations, which they are already doing and to supply the trains which they have al-ready done. There is a long history of central government frus-trating public transport projects in Auckland despite Welling-ton having had electric suburban rail since the 1930’s, now in its third generation of rolling stock. The Auckland Council was delivered a dead ended railway to Britomart which had little future and has done well to stare down and even defy Wellington to move along with the inner city loop which is obviously needed to make the network operate an-ything like properly. The success of this system, already apparent, will drive it fur-ther south. While the breaking of earth at Pukekohe for the new station is a big step forward, pressure needs to turn south to the capital where commitment to match that of our Council will be needed if we are to hope for any real progress.

The mother must ever stand pre-eminent in this work of training the children; while grave and important duties rest upon the father, the mother, by almost constant association with her children, especially during their tender years, must always be their special instructor and companion. She should take great care to cultivate neatness and order in her children, to direct them in forming correct habits and tastes; she should train them to be industrious, self-reliant, and helpful to others; to live and act and labour as though always in the sight of God. {AH 184}

The father and the mother should work together in full sympathy with each other. They should make themselves companions to their children. Parents should study the best and most successful manner of winning the love and confidence of their children, that they may lead them in the right path. {AH 190}

Waikato Council to step downThrough your pages may I request that the Waikato District Council and its General Manager seriously consider stepping down. If they really expect North Waikato residents to accept that the Council “did not designate Pokeno as a growth area” then neither Manager nor Council appear to have the capacity to gen-erate a 30 day plan, never mind a 30 year one.

Last Friday Hunua MP, Andrew Bayly hosted a visit by Associate Minister of Education, Hon Nikki Kay. The focus of this meeting was to discuss the future growth projections for Hunua.

Steve [email protected]

ll It has been a very busy few months for MP Andrew Bayly as he has hosted a number of high profile Minister vis-its and business delega-tions across Hunua, af-ter he published his fu-ture population growth projections, which shows Hunua growing by 30,000 people over the next six years.

With the new special housing areas still to come online, and normal expected growth, educa-tion will need a re-think.

Hon Nikki Kay’s visit was all about ensuring that the government’s roll out of classrooms and new schools across Auckland takes the new

Aligning education and growthE d u c at i o n needs are under the spotlight. A visit to ensure the governments growth plans are aligned to what is actually happening on the ground across Hunua schools.

growth projections into consid-eration, and ensures that they are aligned to what is taking place on the ground.

There were two meetings, one re-garding St. Ignatius Catholic School and the other to do with the Bel-mont Schools.

In 2011 the Ministry of Educa-tion purchased 4.09 hectares (10 acres) of land in Jutland Road from RC Hari & Sons for the new primary school and early education centre.

The Belmont development was ap-parently plagued by consent issues and as a result, the school and Early Learning Centre has not happened yet.

When the Minister was ques-tioned regarding the Belmont Pri-mary School and Early Learning Centre project, and as to whether it will be built, Minister Kay would not be drawn on anything oth-er than to say the purpose of her meeting was to look at education

delivery across the entire area. One could speculate that the

Minister was withholding infor-mation, and that the Belmont School and Early Learning Centre would not be going ahead as previ-ously planned. The Post could not confirm this at the time of going to print.

Please send me your comments or questions to put to the Minister going forward. For your comments and views [email protected]

Discussing education at the Campbell Tyson Business Centre last Friday were L-R Daniel Nakhle, Gary Sweeney Principal Pukekohe Intermediate, Hon Nikki Kay Associate Minister of Education, Andrew Bayly MP for Hunua , Ian McKinnon Principal Pukekohe High, John Gilbert and Bede Mills.

After seeing a gap in the New Zealand market, Jo Pearson put her artistic talents to use by creating a colouring book for adults. Little did she know just how popular the trend would become.

Emma Sharplin. [email protected]

The Waiuku resident has recently launched All Good, a New Zealand Co-louring Book, themed around a New Zealand summer holiday.

“Colouring books for adults were be-coming more and more popular in the UK late last year, and I noticed the trend starting to make waves in New Zealand a few months later. After approaching a publisher I was signed up to produce a New Zealand book and we were able to launch All Good just in time for Christ-mas. Since then the colouring trend has really taken off.”

Jo, who studied fine art in Auckland and is an designer by trade, reinvigo-rated her love of illustration after having children by illustrating several books, in-cluding A Forager’s Treasury and Wild Blackberries. All Good is her first colour-ing in book.

Jo came up with the idea of having a narrative theme to the book, rather than making it generic kiwiana.

“It tells the story of how most people would imagine a classic Kiwi summer holiday – the car ride to the bach or cara-van, fish and chips on the beach, fishing, jigsaw puzzles, swimming. All the best ways to unwind.”

For Jo, she believes that people enjoy taking part in adult colouring partly be-cause of the nostalgia from when they were younger.

“It’s a great way to unwind after a hard day’s work, rather than sitting in front of your TV or staring at your phone. I think it can also help to tap into a creative side that maybe some people have forgotten they had, as well as being a positive and creative way to spend time with your children.”

Adult colouring books have been wel-comed into resthomes as well as hospi-tals, and Jo knows of several businesses that have placed them their lunch room, encouraging communal colouring and in-house competitions. Jo’s book is available in all major book shops, in-cluding Pukekohe Paper Plus and Wai-uku Paper Plus.

New Zealand Bookshop day is Sat-urday, October 31, and All Good is the official book for the national colour-ing competition that is currently being held, with over 170 stores taking part. For those who are interested in entering, feel free to visit either Waiuku or Puke-kohe stores for an entry sheet.

Jo will be judging the national winner and says that entering will be worth-while.

“There are great prizes available, in-cluding a $500 Booksellers voucher for the winner.”

Entries need to be in by Saturday, October 31. For more information, visit www.booksellers.co.nz/bkshop-day/competitions/colouring

Quote: “As a Christian submits to the solemn rite of baptism, the three highest powers in the universe--the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit--place their approval on his act, pledging themselves to exert their power in his behalf as he strives to honour God. He is buried in the likeness of Christ’s death, and is raised in the likeness of His resurrection. . . .

The three great powers of heaven pledge themselves to furnish the Christian with all the assistance he requires. The Spirit changes the heart of stone to the heart of flesh. And by partaking of the Word of God, Christians obtain an experience that is after the divine similitude. When Christ abides in the heart by faith, the Christian is the temple of God. Christ does not abide in the heart of the sinner, but in the heart of him who is susceptible to the influences of heaven.

The light that shines forth from the life of the true Christian testifies to his union with Christ. Self is hidden from view, and Christ is revealed....”Now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2). Then those whose lives have been hidden with Christ, those who on this earth have fought the good fight of faith, will shine forth with the Redeemer’s glory in the kingdom of God.” {RC 107}

Quote; “The light that shines forth from the life of the true Christian testifies to his union with Christ. Self is hidden from view, and Christ is revealed. Heaven recognizes the fulfilment of the promise, “I will make a man more precious than fine gold, even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.” “Now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is.” Then those whose lives have been hidden with Christ, those who on this earth have fought the good fight of faith, will shine forth with the Redeemer’s glory in the kingdom of God.

Dear Reader; God’s purpose for you is that you shall live a life that will make others better,--a life which will show that Christ is formed within, the hope of glory. It is His purpose that you shall be able to say with the apostle Paul, “I live: yet not I, but Christ

liveth in me.” In perfect content, resting in the love of Christ, trusting the Redeemer and Life-giver to work out for you the salvation of your soul, you will know, as you draw nearer and still nearer to Him, what it means to endure the seeing of Him who is invisible. God desires us to rest content in His love. The contentment that Christ bestows is a gift worth infinitely more than gold and silver and precious stones.

Love the right because it is right, and analyse your feelings, your impressions, in the light of the Word of God. Misdirected ambition will lead you into sorrow as surely as you yield to it. Cherish an ambition that will bring glory to God because it is sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Consecrate every power of your being to the accomplishment of a holy work. Make every effort, in and through the grace of Christ, to reach the high standard set before you. You can be perfect in your sphere, even as God is perfect in His sphere. Has not Christ declared, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as you Father which is in heaven is perfect”?

Our lives are pure only when we are under the control of God, and happy only when we hold communion with Him. The lustre possessed by those who have gained the richest experience is but the reflection of the light of the Sun of Righteousness. He who lives nearest to Jesus shines the brightest. And let us thank God that the Master has His hidden ones whose value may not be recognized by the world, but whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life. The Lord knoweth them that are His. “They shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.”

“Behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble; and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. But unto you that fear My name shall the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in His wings.” I am so glad that we have a God who understands,--a God who will reward every man according as his work shall be. I long to see Christians who are harmonious in all their parts. It is so sad to see those whose lives are a jumble of opposites. Christians must be Christlike. The life of a true, lovable Christian is the most powerful argument that can be produced in favour of the Gospel.” {ST, Aug 16, 1905}

Quote; “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

More precious than the golden wedge of Ophir is the power of right thought. We need to place a high value upon the right control of our thoughts; for such control prepares us to labour for the Master. It is necessary for our peace and happiness in this life that our thoughts centre in Christ. As a man thinketh, so is he. {ST, Aug 23, 1905}

ll Pokeno’s school will be cele-brating 150 years next March. The school has been around in various forms and on several different loca-tions within the town.

“The jubilee will be more about 150 years of education rather than the existence of a school building on Pokeno Road”, says the school’s Principal, Blair Johnston.

The current school building dates back to 1961, there were a few classrooms on that site from 1956

as the school itself was still located elsewhere. “Our jubilee will be a turning point for Pokeno,” says Mr Johnston. “It will be the last jubilee as a small semi-rural school. When we reach our 175th, the school and the town will look very different.”

The reunion, which will be held over the weekend of March18-20, 2016, is currently being organised by a small, but highly motivated group of mostly ex-pupils of the school, including two members who are in their eighties and nine-ties, and thus far have attended ev-

ery committee meeting. The last Jubilee in 1991 attracted 300 people, but at the moment no-one has any idea how many peo-ple will turn out for the 150th. “The town hall can only accommodate 150 people so anyone who wants to attend these events needs to regis-ter as soon as possible,” says Mr Johnston.

Grease revival a successEmma [email protected]

ll Be prepared to fall in love with your favourite group of high school kids in the 1950s all over again, as the Pukeko-he Performing Arts brings you the fantastic performance of Grease.

The ladies at the Post were fortunate enough to be invited to last Thursday’s performance at the Harrington Theatre, and were completely blown away by what was presented on stage.

The singing was outstand-ing and we felt each actor suit-ed their roles, however, Amy Knight who played Betty Riz-zo, needs a special mention. Her voice and acting talents are far too great to be kept to a stage in Pukekohe. While the Grease is the word about Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski, Betty Rizzo stole the show.

Production Manager, Shar-nie Carlyle, should be incred-ibly proud of her talented cast and the team who worked tire-

lessly behind the scenes to en-sure all musical numbers were on time and performed with-out a hitch. The team outdid themselves on the costumes and props, with Beauty School Dropout having to be our fa-vourite. It was stated that the show was a revival for the group who had been dormant for the past several years. Here at the Post, we all agree that it was an amazing comeback perfor-mance, and the team are cer-tainly looking forward to their next show. The only feedback that we would have is that the sound systems were slightly pitchy at times, but we are sure it has been fixed for the follow-ing shows. The Pukekohe Per-forming Arts take on Grease is certainly a performance you wouldn’t want to miss, with the group putting on an extra two shows due to the overwhelm-ing response. Secure your tick-ets to the Friday and Saturday night shows as you don’t want to miss it!

Transport Minister Simon Bridges has turned the sod for the next of the Government’s Accelerated Transport Infrastructure Improvements projects being built in Auckland, the Southern Corridor Improvements Project.

Andrew Bayly, the MP for Hunua and Judith Collins, the MP for Pa-pakura, were also present for the sod turning and both say that get-ting this large scale project under-way is excellent news for all the thousands of drivers who use the motorway between Papakura and greater Auckland every day.

Mr Bridges says the $268 million improvements to State Highway 1 (from Manukau to Papakura), as well as an upgrade of the Takanini Interchange will support the rapid population growth that is expected in south Auckland over the next 30 years, as well as address the imme-diate need to keep traffic flowing in the area.

Mr Bridges says the existing bot-tlenecks along the southern motor-way, as well as congestion and safe-ty risks at the Takanini Interchange, will be alleviated.

“Around 11 kilometres of extra lanes will help to improve capac-ity and traffic flow. The re-config-uration of the Interchange will in-clude a freight lane to help service the nearby industrial area and re-

place the loop on-ramp with a di-rect northbound on-ramp to im-prove safety for motorists and com-mercial vehicles.” Mr Bridges says the project’s walking and cycling improvements align with the Gov-ernment’s vision to make cycling a safer and more attractive trans-port choice. “A fully segregated 4.5 kilometre shared path will run from Papakura to Great South Road in Takanini running alongside the State Highway with connections to communities along the way.”

In 2013, the Prime Minister an-nounced a $375 million package of funding to accelerate four key transport projects to address con-gestion and capitalise on the ben-

efits of major roading projects al-ready underway across the city.

“Accelerating this and the other three projects in Auckland – SH20A Kirkbride, Northern Corridor and East West Connections – will help ensure the key routes in the city that provide the backbone to national economic growth and productiv-ity will better serve the communi-ty and improve journey times for commercial and private use.”

“The Southern Corridor im-provements will support the rapid population growth that is expected in South Auckland over the next 30 years, whilst also meeting the im-mediate needs of all of Auckland city,” Mr Bayly and Ms Collins say.

South-West Wastewater Servicing Project

What happens next? We’ve made a start by looking at all the possible options to manage wastewater in the area. If you have any suggestions please email us – at this early stage all ideas are good ideas!

We’ll also be doing a range of technical and environmental investigations. These will help assess if the option can be built, what each option may cost and their potential effects on the natural environment and cultural values.

Following these assessments we’ll come up with a list of feasible options, and would really like to hear your thoughts about them. We’ll then do some more assessments and identify the best practicable option, and again invite your thoughts and feedback. After you have provided your feedback a decision will be made to confirm the option to be consented and constructed.

According to Brent Evans, Manager of Local Board and Stakeholder Liaison for Watercare, Auckland Council has forecast significant population growth in Auckland over the next three decades and beyond.

ll As Watercare provides most water and wastewater infrastruc-ture services in Auckland, they are tasked with developing and imple-menting infrastructure solutions that can support this growth.

One of the areas where urban growth is expected to occur is in South-West Auckland, around Clarks Beach, Kingseat and Waiuku. These communities have recently been connected to a new water supply system and have their own wastewater treatment plants.

However, the existing waste-water treatment plants will not be able to provide ongoing services for a growing population, and for this reason Watercare has established the South-West Wastewater Servic-ing Project.

Project overview

The South-West Wastewater Ser-vicing Project will look at the differ-ent ways that Watercare might be able to handle and treat the extra wastewater generated from grow-ing communities as previously mentioned. They will also be taking into consideration how the growth

in the other areas of Franklin (for example Pukekohe) may need to be accounted for. This project will be looking to identify the ‘best practi-cable option’ to manage the waste-water generated in these areas, whilst taking into consideration en-vironmental, cultural, operational and economic factors.

current manaGement

At present there are three waste-water treatment plants servicing communities in this area located in Waiuku, Clarks Beach and King-seat. There is also a small private treatment plant at the former King-seat Hospital that services the resi-dents and activities on the prem-ises. These treatment plants are all operating effectively at the mo-ment, but as the population grows ,

more thought would need to go into how Watercare will manage the ad-ditional wastewater.

aim

The aim of the project is to work in partnership with the community and mana whenua to identify the best practicable option to provide wastewater services for these com-munities. Watercare says they are committed to working closely with the community to identify the best practicable solutions.

Throughout the project there will be opportunities to provide your feedback on the feasible options. If you would like to receive updates on the project please email us at [email protected] with the subject line ‘sign me up’ to register or give us a call on 09 442 2222.

N E W S L E T T E R 1An introduction to the...

South-West Wastewater Servicing Project

In simple terms, the best practicable option for the South-West Wastewater

Servicing Project means the ‘best option’.

This would be the wastewater treatment

and disposal method that balances a number of

objectives, is affordable and protects our communities

while also preventing harm to the environment and

cultural values.

BEST PRACTICABLE OPTION...WHAT DOES

THAT MEAN?

In the coming years we’re expecting more people to move to the Franklin area. As Franklin grows so does the demand for public services such as water and wastewater. Most of the communities in this area were recently connected to the water supply from the Waikato water treatment plant in Tuakau. Now we are looking at how we can best provide wastewater services.

Project overviewThe South-West Wastewater Servicing Project will look at the different ways we might be able to handle and treat the extra wastewater generated from growing communities in the Kingseat, Clarks Beach, Glenbrook Beach and Waiuku areas. We’ll also be taking into consideration how the growth in the other areas of Franklin (for example Pukekohe) may need to be accounted for, but at the moment our focus will be on providing wastewater services to the communities mentioned above.

This project will be looking to identify the ‘best practicable option’ to manage the wastewater generated in these areas. This option will consider and balance environmental, cultural, operational and economic factors.

College students complete sleep outsAfter investing blood, sweat and tears for the past year into their handmade sleep outs, the students of the BCITO programme at Waiuku College can now put down the hammer.

Emma [email protected]

ll The two sleep outs are now complete and are proudly on display, and for sale, at Waiuku ITM. Each one is wired with lights and power points and has an

external power input. They are very well in-

sulated (wall and ceiling), lined with Osbrace and covered with Shadowclad all ready for painting. The framing and flooring is all H3 treated timber to en-sure a long life.

The BCITO course is for NCEA Level 3, and allows students to prepare for an apprenticeship within the building trade. Last year, the group had great suc-cess in building a jigger shed for the Glenbrook Vintage Railway, and ma-ny students went on to gain successful employ-

ment within their trade roles. Teacher, John Rob-inson, is incredibly proud of what his students have achieved, as well as the others who had to give up the course due to finding

apprenticeships through-out the year.

“We were very lucky to have had the help from Waiuku ITM, who assist-ed us with the design and materials. They also have them on display for us in their yard.”

The funds raised from the sale of the sleep outs go towards costs, as well as funding next year’s stu-dents and resource devel-opment. Those who are interested in purchasing a sleep out can contact Waiuku College or Wai-uku ITM for more infor-mation.

Waiuku Theatre presents...

One of the first things the audience will notice when the eight strong cast of Artifice take to the stage is the diver-sity of the voices.

A Southern belle, Irish mobster and Latino cocktail waitress are just some of the fascinating characters you will meet in this affectionate and funny show by Anne Flanagan.

“Some of the accents you hear are even real, with a Welsh woman, Eng-lishman and Canadian joining the Ki-wis for this comedy of errors,” says di-rector Glenda Hagenson, who also plays Judith Fontaine, an influential newspaper maven.

The story centres on struggling art-ist, Payne Showers (played by Rick Turner), who finally gets his big break. He dies. Fortunately Payne’s death greatly inflates the value of his work. Unfortunately his estranged wife, Mag-gie (played by Melissa Charbonneau),

must sell it to avoid bankruptcy. An affectionate tribute to loyalty and

love, Artifice will take you through a range of emotions, entwined with a good dose of humour and a whole lot of fun. The cast is busy putting the fi-nal touches on the show with the help of assistant director, Jo Scobie, after a two month rehearsal period.

“We are all looking forward to shar-ing the stories of the vast and varied personalities in Artifice on the Back-stage Theatre soon,” says Glenda.

Artifice will run from Friday, Octo-ber 30, through to Saturday, November 21, (every Thursday, Friday and Satur-day), at the Backstage Theatre on Vic-toria Avenue in Waiuku.

Tickets are $16 each and on sale now via Eventfinder or direct booking on: 021 162 8110.

Door sales will only be available on the day if not previously sold out.

Waiuku’s Class of 47ll Saturday October 3rd saw a group of over 80 year olds lunching at the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club. With the exception of one or two guests, all were classmates who enrolled at Waiuku District High School in 1947, their first reunion being held in 1982 followed at yearly intervals since 1986.

After being started as an all-girl get-together, in

the year 2000 it was decided to invite the boys along and they have been an integral part of the group ev-er since.

Always held on the first Saturday in October, it is a time for meeting old friends with lots of reminiscing and laughter, but also time to remember classmates no longer with them.

A century for Violet

Violet Storey (nee Gillott) born 24 Oct 1915, to Frank & Ann Gillott, Te To-ro, turned 100 on Saturday. Her family and many of her nieces and nephews were at Franklin Memorial Hospital to recognise her milestone.

Her life has been a very busy one, she was heavily involved with the Country Women’s Institute, both with Kohek-ohe/Te Toro and Waiuku groups. She won national CWI knitting competi-tions and she also won a Thorough-bred Wool competition for a design and knit garment.

She played hockey and was a repre-sentative player for Franklin.

During WW2 she was in the Wom-en’s Auxiliary.

She married Merlin Storey, garage proprietor at Otaua and in his later years in Waiuku, and brought up three children, taking a great interest in all their activities.

Violet’s energy has now waned, and she is being cared for by the lovely staff at Franklin Memorial Hospital, which by the way is where, some 60 years ago, her children were born.

Manukau Harbour - November 8General Meeting:

Kentish Hotel - November 25One Base:

Te Toro - February 4 to 7

I recently took part in an interclub challenge between Counties and Clevedon clubs; I’m pleased to say that Counties easily won the challenge 20 points to eleven! Both teams had

people fishing from as far afield as Gt Barrier Island to the Mercury Islands and every-

where in between. What stood out for me was that

nine of Counties points came from the Manukau Harbour. One boat

travelled all the way to Tau-ranga to catch nothing. It just goes to show that there

is a lot to be said for our local fishing. The Manu-kau Harbour turned up the biggest gurnard, no surprise there and also the only trevally for the comp.

O t h e r n o t i c e a b l e catches were the biggest John Dory I’ve ever seen, caught by Mitchell Hilton from around Ponui Is-land, and a 6.2kg snapper by Pat Egan from Gt Bar-rier. To their credit Cleve-don weighed in two nice kingfish from Kawakawa Bay, a species we couldn’t get on the day. The trophy will hopefully soon be on display at the Kentish Hotel for all to see.

Trevally are a much un-dervalued fish, they are hard fighting, good eat-ing and fun to catch. The best places to catch them on the Manukau are over shellfish beds or where the incoming tide floods onto the banks. The shal-lower the water the more important it becomes to fish low light times such as early mornings. The area around the red tri-pod off Big Bay on the Papakura channel is a good place to start. Baits

should be small, pilchard cubes or small squid baits work well, as do shellfish. Light gear and a soft tip rod complete the pack-age but if you do catch one make sure that you use a landing net as they often drop off as you lift them from the water.

Once the predictably unpredictable spring weather settles the west

coast is likely to turn on some great fishing for snapper, my advice is to travel to 50 to 60m, watch your fish finder and look for signs on the bottom. Once you’ve found some, anchor there and give it 30 minutes. If snapper aren’t on the menu then repeat.

Stay safe on the water, Smudge.

Last thursday, the Mudlarks reached a milestone in their mangrove clearing efforts. they finished the cutting of mangroves on West side of Waiuku estuary.

Tony Ogilvie

ll Mudlarks Chairman, Ian Scobie, is delighted with the progress that has been made. “We have reached this long hoped for mile-stone and I am delighted, moreover we have managed to do this work on time, in accord with Council’s stag-ing plan that was made us-ing our estimates.”

This completes Stage 1A of the new 75ha, 30 year consent that was granted earlier this year.

Work for Stage 1A, which

is nearly two hectares in size, started June this year, and was scheduled to be completed by end of Octo-ber.

This means there are no mangroves now, from be-hind the Fire Station, right down to Sandspit.

“There is now an incred-ible clear view now of the sandspit yachting area. It is much wider and quite spec-tacular,” says Ken Letcher, an active Mudlark and res-ident of Meachen Terrace.

There are many bun-dles of mangroves ready for Mudlarks to transport up to Waiuku wharf, and it is an-ticipated this will be com-pleted over the next week, hopefully by Friday, Octo-ber 30. The team then hope to commence work on Stage 1B, on the East side of Estu-ary.

From November 1, Auckland Council will no longer be issuing rubbish bag stickers to Franklin residents as they roll out the new regional orange rubbish bag that will cost people less.

The new pre-paid re-

gional bag replaces stick-ers and will move Auck-land a step closer to offer-ing a more consistent and more convenient rubbish service, at a lower price.

“We’re bringing Frank-lin in line with these other parts of the region by in-

troducing pre-paid rub-bish bags instead of stick-ers and the time is right as we launch a single colour, design and price for bags for everyone.

We’re not announcing the price yet but it will be competitive, which is

even better news for our customers,” says Waste Solutions Manager Ian Stupple.

“With bags on super-market shelves in all of these areas and at out-lets in Auckland’s CBD, it is easier than ever for cus-

Orange is the new black

tomers to use our service.”People wil l have a

choice of two sizes – 40L and 60L – and either single bags or packs of five to suit their households’ needs.

Supermarkets will stock the new orange bag in-stead of stickers from No-vember, but residents with old stock should not be worried, as council will still pick up the stick-ered bags for several more months as people use up their supplies.

The new orange bag features a new design to show how it is ‘the bag that gives back’. Any sur-plus from bag sales helps to fund other waste and environmental services in local communities.

It is incredibly disappointing to see black rubbish bags and household waste being dumped in drains on our rural Franklin roads that don’t see much traffic.

Emma Sharplin. [email protected]

ll For example, just last week whitebaiters report-ed that under the Tuakau Bridge were several bags of household rubbish and bedding littering the side of the gravel road – see photograph for reference. Not only is it disgusting, but this area is a common place for flooding, which could see this filth ending up in our local waterways.

It is sheer laziness, as the Waikato District Council provides a number of opportunities for communities to dispose of their rubbish in an appropriate and legal manner. These include the regular drop-off points, the inorganic collection, which is coming up in Novem-ber, and permanent recycling facilities at some refuse centres – there is no excuse for dumping your rubbish.

Over the past couple of months, the Council have installed additional signage at what appears to be reg-ular dumping sites, informing the public that rubbish dumping is illegal and fines apply.

“We make efforts to identify people that dump their rubbish, but we do need the community’s help in iden-tifying those responsible and if anyone sees rubbish being dumped, they should call us on 0800 492 452 and report it,” says Communication Adviser, Nicole Nooyen.

“We urge people to report any dumping they see, and record any details of the vehicle involved, includ-ing the registration plate, colour, make and model of the vehicle, and the time of day so the appropriate legal

Rubbish dumping disappointing

action can be taken.”When Council obtains the evidence of

the dumping, they are able to either is-sue a fine or consider court action. While they are currently investigating other methods to prevent people dumping rubbish, the real solution is someone stepping forward and helping identify the culprits.

The maximum fine Council can is-sue for this offence is $400, however the maximum fine that can be awarded to Council following a prosecution is $5000 for an individual and $20,000 for a body corporate for leaving litter. If that litter is likely to endanger any person or to cause physical injury the fines are $7,500 for an individual or $30,000 for a company.

In the last 12 months Council have is-sued three infringements at $400 each in the northern part of our district.

“We have also sent several warning letters to suspected offenders (these are sent out when there is insufficient evidence to prosecute). Without suffi-cient evidence or eye witness accounts, we cannot issue infringements.”

The Tuakau inorganic refuse day will be on Saturday, November 28, from 8.30am – 12pm, at the Tuakau Saleyards. For only $15 per trailer load, that is a small price to pay to dispose of unwanted furniture, lawn-mowers, carpet, televisions or appliances from households, rather than dumping them on Franklin’s roadsides for someone else to have to clean up.

News to use

A question was asked at the Waiuku business and Development Assn AGM last week, about the stagnant state of Lions’ Lake. Waiuku Cosmopolitan club Presi-dent, John Crighton is disgusted with the state of the waterway.

He said the weir gate, that was designed to be lifted allowing the natural tide flow to flush the lake, had not been opened in years. “It is because of this that the wa-ter is in very poor condition, dying birds and fish and stagnant water – I don’t think it is good enough and Auckland Council should sort it out,” he said.

Local board members informed the AGM that Coun-cil tell them the lake is a holding pond for storm wa-ter and is a sediment control area. This was vigorously challenged by members of the meeting including my-self. Former Franklin Councillor, Judith Hull, said her memory of the development of the lake was as an at-traction not a storm water runoff pond.

I agreed and noted that the Lions’ Club of Waiuku had installed the weir which was designed to be lifted to allow the tide to flush pout the lake and initially this had happened on King tides at least twice a year.

The fact that the Colombo Road water course and the last fragments of the Awaroa Stream run into the lake, do not justify it being converted into a stagnant holding pond.

During the Waiuku Town Centre upgrade started by the former Franklin Council, large screens were in-stalled on these stream outlets to filter sediment flow into the lake. Has Auckland Council ever cleaned them out I wonder?

Let’s get it storted Auckland Council. Do not just put assumed clap trap in the way of dealing with the issue. Clean out Lions’ Lake! And while I have the subject in my mind, it is about time the name of the lake was changed to reflect the historical significance of the area, rather than the club that stared its development.

He has just had confirmation on resource consent and an civil aviation sign off for a 100m high swing, which is big enough for four people to swing above a gully on Karioitahi Beach at any one time.

Janine Baalbergen

ll “A swing offers a two-way ex-perience unlike a bungy jump that goes straight down. It also is a better way to make great recordings. The winch that takes you up to the top can run at variable speeds, so it can be stopped to enjoy a view or have a conversation with each other and the operator on the ground. It is con-trolled from the ground,” he says.

Flyers will lie prone in a harness, pretty much the way hang gliders do and they will wear helmets that have an audio system as well as a video camera, so the trip can be record-ed for posterity. Their flight is con-trolled from the ground and the fly-ers have no control over what hap-pens once they are strapped in.

The swing set-up will have three solid steel rods positioned in a lat-tice format with 100 supporting guy-wires, which is visually inoffensive, says Mr Giltrap.

The flyers step into the swing in full safety harness on the ground and are slowly hoisted to the top. Anyone over the age of 10 can enjoy the swing and only serious health is-sues will prevent anyone from tak-ing part.

He expects to be able to build the swing over the next summer and believes that his swing will be the worlds highest. He sees many ben-efits for the region in terms of tour-ism.

The swing will be made in Aus-tralia. Swings exist elsewhere in the world, such as in Florida, in So-chi, Russia and the Nevis swing in Queenstown. They all have a good safety record, Mr Giltrap says. Waiu-ku firm, Mechanical Design and De-velopment Ltd, have been consulted on the project, but the expertise to build the swing is not available here.

Mr Giltrap owns a piece of land overlooking the beach where the swing will be built and says the spot is easily accessible.

Plans unveiled for giant swingE x P E r i E n c E d adventure tourism operator, Lance Giltrap, is looking to build and operate the world’s tallest swing.

your survival kitIf you feel your stress level rising at the mere thought

of your upcoming wedding, imagine what it will be like on the big day. Of course you want your wedding day to be fabulous, and the best way to ensure that is to be prepared for every eventuality. Here are a few things to pack and have on hand for the big day: Makeup kit and

makeup removal pads • Pocket mirror • Glue for false nails and eyelashes • Pre-moistened wipes, deodorant, and lip balm • A toothbrush, toothpaste, and breath mints • Transparent nail polish, nail file, and nail polish remover • Bobby pins (to control rebellious curls and to affix your veil) • Extra pair of pantyhose • Pair of ballerina shoes (for the end of the evening when your feet ache after all that dancing!) • Tissues as well as ibuprofen (for unexpected headaches) • Finally, because you know just what your

man is capable of, include a pair of black socks in case he had the bright idea of wearing

white sports socks with his tux!

Your wedding preparation starts here

Your wedding preparation starts here

You’ve found your Prince Charming; he gave you a ring, and now you’re getting ready for the fairy tale wedding. It might be hard, but now is the

time to stop dreaming and start preparing. On av-erage, about one full year is necessary to look after all the details of your dream ceremony. There is a lot to think about and, more importantly, a lot of reservations to make! For example, if the wedding venue is booked only a few months before your big day, you may end up having to make compro-mises on such important details as the date or the services on offer. The same thing applies to the caterer. Supplying your guests with good food is paramount at a wedding. The company you were hoping to hire may no longer be available if you only call a few weeks before the event. Once the venue and caterer have been reserved, it’s time to find the right DJ to set the dance floor afire. If you opt for a more classical style of music, such as a string quartet, you should start looking even ear-lier; they are few and far between. You also need to book your professional photographer about six months before the wedding. You’ll be glad you bothered, when you’re leafing through your wed-ding album a few years down the road. And if you intend to go abroad for your honeymoon, book your tickets and hotel now. You’ll save precious dollars that can be invested instead in the decora-tion of your reception hall or in buying favours for your guests. Where weddings are concerned, the rule is simple: make all your reservations well in advance so you can get the top quality professionals you want.

Colour trends for 2016 It is very important to choose the right color palette

before you start planning for your wedding. A great

palette sets the tone for your whole day and

incorporates with the season’s colors.

P ink is such a perfect color for romantic weddings in spring

and summer 2016. As one of the most impor-tant events in your life, your wedding surely deserves a great deal of consideration on every part, especially the wedding colour schemes. “Colors this season trans-port us to a happier, sun-nier place where we feel free to express a wittier ver-sion of our real selves”, said Leatrice Eiseman, execu-tive director of the Pantone Color Institute. In 2016 we’ll see some breathtaking wedding color ideas with these colors. Pink seems to be the perfect palette for 2016. Anything from Rose pink and char-coal, pink , green and light purple, pink and navy blue, pink and black and roman-tic pink and grey. Pink when matched with gold successfully adds a beauti-ful touch of elegance and romance to it.

Dress for Success

A fter finding the perfect part-ner, choosing the wedding dress is probably the hardest

decision any bride faces. You know that on your wedding day all eyes will be on you, and you want to look fabulous. But there are so many dresses to choose from, how can you possibly find that one dress that will make your heart sing?FOR HER: For the bride or even the mother-in-law for that matter, choosing a dress to suit your body type is imperative. Thousands of dif-ferent styles and models of wedding gowns are available on the market, one more beautiful than the next, however knowing your body type will help in finding the style of dress

that will best suit you. No mat-ter what your body type, let your instincts guide you towards the dress of your dreams. Don’t hesitate to ask for a few extra adjustments from the shop’s seamstress so that you will feel completely comfortable. FOR HIM: On the wedding day, it may be true that all eyes are on the bride, but a well dressed groom will still be appreciated. A classy and unique suit is on the agenda; one that he feels comfortable in, one that cor-responds to his personal style and that is tailored to his body shape. For an impeccably fitted suit, the groom should have a last fitting at the tai-lor’s, two or three weeks before the wedding.

For an event as important as a wedding, it is absolutely essential to dress in an appropriate

manner and appear well groomed.

Wedding dress trends for 2016...

Shoes...

Forever Yours

Tulle, beadwork, and fine tailoring are among the details that will always have a place in a wedding dress. Combined with these classic elements, plunging necklines, capes, floral patterns, chic separates, feath-ers and partial overlay skirts are all “in” for 2016.

Lace V-Neck dresses similar to that worn by

Kady Prujean (leftt)are very popular for 2016. Kady’s dress also comprises of beauti-ful embellishments that makes her gown increasingly modern with her subtle V neck-line adding just the right touch of drama to the dress.

Another trend many brides are opting for, is the option of an easy, chic detach-able skirt. This means that they can easily switch up their looks between the wedding and the reception. The dress could feature a romantic overskirt that is worn during the ceremony, which can then be removed to transform it into a dance floor-ready look for later.

wedding guide

Comfy enough to wear throughout the ceremony, photo’s and reception formalities.

Above: Most brides wear white or ivory on their wedding day, but that doesn’t mean you have to! So if pink, green, red or even black speaks to you, there’s no reason you can’t toss tradition and rock it on your wedding day like Hannah Smith did with her gorgeous black gown.

Today’s bride and groom are connected

Social network sites can be used to send invi-tations and reminders

and also to express mood. For themed weddings espe-cially, small “nibbles” of info can be sent, little hints to let guests know more about the ceremony. Steer them in the right direction about the dress code or ask them for music suggestions. Post photos and video clips fea-turing the bride and groom-to-be and let your friends and guests have a great time commenting on them. Many future couples create

a blog, recounting the or-ganization of their wedding from start to finish. In fact, many wedding blogs can be found online these days. They are useful for other future couples, as every-one shares advice on how to organize a successful wedding. Perhaps the most useful application of the Internet in wedding plan-ning, brides-to-be can post their wedding gift lists on-line. This makes it easier for guests to know the needs and tastes of the couple.

A religious marriage ceremony is led by a member of the clergy, whereas a civil ceremony is usually conducted by a judge, justice of the peace, or a registrar. One of the advantages of a civil wedding is complete freedom of choice as to where the ceremony will take place. For example, the wed-ding could take place in a lawyer’s office, a private home, outside in a park or botanical garden, or in a restaurant, hotel, or rented hall. It is a perfect occasion to add a personal touch to a wedding ceremony.

Social networks such as Twitter and Facebook are now an integral part of everyday life for many

young people.

Your invitations announce your wedding to your guests in style. It’s important to choose just the right words, which you

can write yourself or choose from examples available from the stationer. You will need to know how many invitations you

need, planning on one per couple or one per address. For the reply card, the printer can print the name and full address of

the person in charge of receiving the RSVPs.

Your invites

a key element of any weddingFloral designers use various types of flow-ers, colors of flowers, and design styles and techniques to make each wedding beautiful for each bride in a way that is unique and spe-cial to that bride. The flowers need to reflect the personality of the bride, her style, her aspi-rations and her dreams. The floral designer will combine the worlds of fashion and lifestyle that truly reflects the style of the bride. The trend is towards smaller bou-

quets and less imposing flo-ral centerpieces on the tables. Vases are appearing in all shapes, sizes, and materials: ceramic, zinc, glass, and stone-ware, for example. Regardless of the colors, tradition still rules the size of a bouquet. Choose a simple bouquet if your outfit is fairly ornate. Round bouquets go well with tapered dresses, and cascading bouquets are perfect for gowns with trains.

For 2016, lavish, gathered from the garden is in! It is sensual and tactile. It features garden flow-ers grouped in loose gatherings with berries and drapey foliages. Rich in textures and filled with pinks, blushes contrasted with rich plums and crimson.

An all important decision

Finding a caterer or venue

Finding a caterer or venue for your wedding is just one of the tasks that need to be arranged, but it is a funda-mental one. Ideally, you want the best, but the “best” is what is considered best for you and your personal needs. So decide beforehand what your expecta-tions are as there are several things to consider that will help you make your choice. Begin by inviting estimates for various menus. Don’t hesitate to ques-tion on different points: are they experi-enced in wedding banquets? How many other weddings will they be catering that weekend? Are they classic or creative? It is wise to make an appoint-ment with your caterers or venue to taste both the wine and dishes they are proposing. If you still can’t make up your mind, base your decision on the style of your wedding, the time of year, or the place you have chosen for the reception.

• Establish a budget before meeting with a caterer/venue and stick to it.

• Make a list of questions to ask• Request a sampling of menu item choices

•THE PORTSIDE•

Here is a quick list of all the necessary steps you need to follow in order to turn your wedding into a dream come true.

About one year before the wedding• Reception hall- Lots of options are open to you, such as a hotel recep-tion room, restaurant, boat, vi neyard, golf club, or mar quee tent. De pending on your budget, think about the style of wedding you’d like and choose a suitable venue. • Caterer - When booking a caterer, don’t forget to talk about all the details of the meal. Will the kit-chen be on site? Will taxes be char ged? Can they make the cake as well? • Celebrant - Meet with the celebrant (priest, reg-istrar, or other official) to en sure that he or she will be available on the date set for your wedding and to see which documents you will need to supply.

About six months be fore the wedding• Music and MC - Now you will have to book a master of ce re monies (MC) as well as a DJ or orchestra. This is an important step, as the MC will create the mood of the evening. Choose some-one who will respect your tastes and requirements.• Clothing and accessories - Now’s the time to think about purchasing and fitting the wedding dress, the groom’s tuxedo, and accessories, such as shoes. Make sure you order your wedding bands at this time.• Photographer - Book the services of a profes-sional photo grapher in order to have a lasting record of your wedding day memories. Unfor-tuna tely, a friend or family member, however well-intentioned, is rarely able to produce qua lity photos.

About three months before the wedding• Decorations and flowers - Decorations, flowers, and the bridal bouquet should be ordered now. Ensure that the style and colours of these ele-ments complement each other. • Car - Reserve the services of a chauffeur with a luxury car. Arriving in a limousine, a conver tible, or an antique car is a great way to start your big day.• Honeymoon - Lastly, spoil yourselves with a romantic in terlude to start your married life. Treat yourselves to a trip you’ll never forget. Just make sure your passports haven’t expired!

Reservations - essential for the perfect wedding!

Do you want your wedding to be perfect? A beautiful day, just like

you’ve always hoped for?

Congratulationson your engagement.I’m a registered MarriageCelebrant dedicated to helpi gmake your ceremony personal, unique, intimate and memorable.

A bevy of beautiful bridesmaids from a local wedding. L - R: Sara Millband, Kaitlin Clark-Groom, Rachel Harker, Corrie Taylor

The role of a bridesmaid

Being a bridesmaid is so much more than slipping on a dress and looking pretty.

If your engaged friend has asked you to be part of her wedding party, don’t take it

lightly, as she’s asking for you to support her through one of the most important days time in her life.

It certainly isn’t an easy task choosing your bridal party. The bride-to-be has selected you as she values you as her nearest and dearest, and hopes to rely on you for support not only for her big day, but leading up to the event as well.

This doesn’t mean you have to relinquish your life until the bride is married. As simple as it sounds, just by showing up, spending time with the bride before her big day and talk-ing through the wedding plans can be one of the best ways to show your support.

Even if it is helping out with some of the most mundane de-tails, she’ll likely be looking for a second opinion to help her make decisions.

Every bride is different, and it can be a stressful time, so step back and be mindful of her wishes.

A slight hitch or two is in-evitable with any event, but the bride doesn’t necessarily need to know about them nor do you need to make them into a dra-ma. If one of the bridesmaids is missing a shoe or you are run-ning slightly behind schedule, don’t run over to the bride for an answer. Instead, talk to an-other person in charge so that the bride can relax and enjoy their day. Help her carry her dress on the day, and make sure she looks great for her photos. If she needs assistance, help her in the rest room and ask if she needs anything – drink of wa-ter, make up retouching or just a breather from the family.

The job of a good bridesmaid is identical to that of a good friend. She should be there with encouragement, comfort, emo-tional support, and, at this stage of the bride’s life, a willingness to tie ribbons and help with seating charts.

Remember, this is the big-gest day of the bride’s life, and she would like to have as many fun and drama-free reasons to remember it by.

Love you

Rustic and Country was the theme to our wedding, with col-

ours being soft pastels. We were both raised on farms and share a love for the out-doors so it seemed fitting for us to have our wedding on a farm.

We were lucky to have both the reception and ceremony in one place, but just a short drive apart. We married un-der the Kaihikatea’s and wil-low trees at the back of the farm. We tried to make and DIY as much as we could. We made our own wedding arch and aisle, bringing into it cane hearts white chiffon to match the rustic feel. Sue, our celebrant, was amazing and worked with us and what we were after in the ser-vice.

Our guests had to drive through an arch of oaks that ran alongside a massive pond back out where we had set up a Marquee. It was sur-rounded by several smaller ponds, and a paddock where the clay bird shooter was set up - this proved to be a very well received activity by our guests while we had our photos taken and was run by a good friend. We also had a round of croquet set up for those interested.

Our bar was a bath tub full of wine, beer and non alco-holic beverages, and we had an old freezer set up behind a couple of trees full of ice to keep the drinks cool. A table with milk bottles and straws were set alongside sev-eral drink dispensers full of punch, which went down a treat as it was such a hot day.

Our fantastic caterer set up our tables with hessian table

clothes and old tins holding flowers as our centre pieces. Donna did an amazing job to match the home style meals that we were after, with refreshing fruit, cheese and sweet treat platters for dessert. Not having access to power, she took it all in her stride and made it all work by using outdoor char-broil cookers - our food was delicious.

For entertainment, we had booked the talented Franklin singer, Cody Tucker, and his guitar. We sourced a small generator for him to run his amp and he provided a great range of tunes throughout the whole day. Later in the

evening, we had two gas fire braisers beside him, which allowed guests to dance late into the night. Cody took

the reception from great to amazing, and is still the talk of the wedding today.

Rather than a tradition-al wedding book, we left guests to navigate the use of a typewriter, with most succeeding at leaving us a note. We had a pen for back up! Our photographer, Alarn, visited our venue several days out and un-derstood our rustic theme when it came to editing the photos. He most certainly captured all that we had hoped for in our special day and more.

We were very privileged to have been allowed to use our friends farm as a venue, as this made our day more than perfect.

Dylan Thomson has his sights set on the New Zealand Rally Championships 2016, and has good chance of finishing strongly within the series.

Emma [email protected]

ll The Waiuku petrol head has just devoted his life savings into Ford Fiesta ST to help pursue his career in rallying, an investment Dylan says is the best he has made.

“It is ready to race, which is incredibly excit-ing and the perfect car for the path I want to take. It was formally owned by Ben Hunt, who just took out NZ Rally Champion-ships 2015.”

The Waiuku resident was introduced to his love of racing through go karts at the tender age of six years. From there, the addiction took hold, and Dylan soon found him-self at the Waiuku Dirt Track.

Dylan took out the 2013 sprint series in Wai-uku Forest in a Subaru Impreza, and at 18 years old, Dylan purchased his first rally sprint car, a Subaru Legacy RS.

For Dylan, the dream is becoming a reality and his hard work of making it to the top is beginning to pay off.

V8 Supercars ready for ITM 500

ll The ITM 500 is re-turning to Pukekohe this year. The Aussie V8 supercars circuit will land in Pukekohe for the racing on 6-8 No-vember.

New Zealand’s sole entry in the V8 Super-cars Championships, Shane van Gisbergen, Fabian Goulthard and Andre Heimgartner of Super Black Racing, sadly lost their car to an accident at Bathurst last week and are out of the race.

They have already released plans to race next year with two cars. The actual racing will involve two sprint rac-es on Saturday and one 200km race with pit-stops on Sunday. The sprint races are de-

signed to encourage drivers to attack by al-leviating the need to be conservative while trying to maintain tyre life.

Each sprint event will include 120 min-utes of practice on Fri-day to incorporate team testing. This will bring more cars to the track for the fans to watch.

To help celebrate the V8’s coming to Pukeko-he, there will be a free drive-in movie at Eco-light Stadium in Puke-kohe on Friday, Octo-ber 30.

There will be plenty of activities for people to enjoy from 5:30pm. You must be parked for the drive-in movie by 7:30pm.

“There has been plenty of blood, sweat and tears in the workshop, but I am really looking forward to my test sprint at the end of November on Murray’s Road, in Tuakau.”

Ben Hunt is currently Dylan’s mentor, and fully sup-ports the 20 year old to compete at national level.

2016 Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Ral-ly Championship will travel the length and breadth of the country to the best rally roads on offer with the an-nouncement of a provisional six round calendar. The NZRC will visit Whangarei, Otago, Canterbury, Gis-borne, Coromandel and the new addition of Paihia, as rounds of the 2016 series.

The exciting calendar will see New Zealand’s best ral-ly drivers compete on a variety of terrain from the un-dulating crests of the Otago highlands, the fast cam-bered roads of Whangarei, Canterbury’s wintery for-est tracks, the twisting roads of the Gisborne and Co-romandel ranges, before finishing on the Far North’s gravel highways.

The 2016 season will start at the Otago Classic over the weekend of April 8-10. The two day event will be held over the undulating crests southland roads that

are widely regarded by drivers as among the best grav-el roads in the world.

Dylan says that plenty of training is needed, as rallies can be grueling on both the body and the car. “But be-ing mentored by New Zealand’s current NZRC cham-pion is certainly a huge help. I am certainly grateful for the support Ben has given me, and am looking forward to our continued partnership.”

Dylan is fully committed to his sport, and is 100 per-cent backed by not only is parents, but his employ-ment, Rattrie Panel Beaters.

However, rallying is an expensive sport, with entry fees being one of the largest costs within the indus-try and Dylan is on the lookout for further sponsors. For those who are interested in helping support the budding rally car driver, visit his Facebook page, Dy-lan Thomson Rallysport.

A Waiuku resident would like to nominate the team at Unichem Waiuku Pharmacy, on Queen Street, for this week’s WOW Award. When a lady went to get her regular prescription, including two wrist braces that her doctor had advised her to buy, she was unfortunatly un-able to obtain both due to her tight budget constaints. Kevin’s team at Unichem helped the lady and arranged for her to get both braces she needed. This was very much appreciated, and really made her day. The customer said that is wasn’t the first time she had spectacular service from these lovely ladies and that they are very consistent.

It’s been a year since Cherie Garland and Kate Rushworth set up the free com-munity run group, an arm of Body Blast, which has been incredibly successful.

Because supporting local events is im-portant to them, they celebrated by or-ganising a crew to participate in the re-cent Pukekohe Joggers Club half mara-thon. A great time was had by all of those from the group who participated, with entries divided between both the 6km

and 21km. Even though the All Blacks were playing, the team came armed with an iPad and Sky, which saw all their bas-es covered for an enjoyable day.

“Being a free group, we have seen some great friendships made and we would love to acknowledge this amaz-ing group that turned up last weekend. We would like thank them for being such amazing fun people to be around,” say both Kate and Cherie.

After weather can-celled the first day of play for the season, the next two weeks to follow would provide plenty of action, with teams show-casing their new line ups and uniforms for the 2015/16 seasons.

The homeruns started right from the first game with Southern Pioneers Lincoln Posimani (2) and Piriniha Huriwai (1) get-ting their team Southern Pioneers, off to a good start to the season.

Clarks Beach Bowling Club held the second tournament of the Bill Osborne Memorial se-ries sponsored by Os-borne Realty, on Thurs-day 22nd October. This day’s tournament was also sponsored by Longford Park Village who supplied the meat pack prizes for the win-ners. The day was over-cast and a vicious cross wind had bowls run-ning in the wrong di-rections. A great level-ler for the players.Winners were :- Houdini. Neil George, Geoff Morris and Glenn Newton. Second were :- The Fijians. Jim Kishore,Peter Bulbar and Norm Earnshaw. Third were:- Motley Crew. Chris Walker, Barry Williams and Len Cooney.

hit one homerun each for Redhill Rocketz in Round Two.

Round Three saw the new team, Pukekohe Rangers, showing form of old with two wins from two games with Weymouth Bombaz al-so collecting their second win to lead the pack.

The women’s section is also providing good play, with the new size providing plenty of op-portunity for homeruns but most falling just short.

The season is looking to be a cracker with Takanini looking to defend their title and push for their third consecutive title. With player and coach Sue-Anne Hicks at the helm once again, they have plenty to play for this season and firmly stamp their mark in Women’s Softball.

Round One, Saturday, October 3: Games postponed, weather; Round Two, Saturday, October 10:

A counter opinion for a future mayor to contemplate!

Dear Phil, or Mark, or Stephen, or whoever else stands for Mayor of Auckland Council.

A diverse and fast growing city faces many challenges. All the legacy councils brought varying quality infrastructure and commu-nity facilities. They also brought different rat-ing systems that are now finally all aligned. There has definitely been pain in that pro-cess where some of us have faced substantial increases and others who have had their de-creases withheld. Amalgamation was never going to be easy.

Let’s look at some facts from the Annual Re-port, as audited by the Office of the Auditor General.

Capital expenditure in 2014-15 was $1.533 billion. It provided a number of vital assets. This was achieved under budget, delivering $38 million in additional savings and a surplus of $80 million.

Debt as at 30 June 2015 was $7.334 billion, keeping interest paid on that debt under 12% of rating income, and sustaining Auckland Council’s AA credit rating. Yes it is a big figure but it is a big business and the credit rating re-flects the conservative management of the fi-nances. That debt is only used to fund the con-struction of new assets, like libraries, leisure centres, new bridges, cycleways, and roads. Some of these assets attract government sub-sidy, but some do not. Debt does not and can-not fund operational expenses.

Operating expenditure rose in 2010, then dropped in 2011, but has since flat lined. We’re managing this, despite accommodating an ex-tra 40,000 people every year. So some folks do take the capital gain and move elsewhere and good for them and many others arrive. Long term projections suggest that Auckland will come to accommodate half of NZ’s population growth and 90% of additional employment. We are undoubtedly a growing and popular city with ever increasing employment oppor-tunities and must be equipped to support that.

Remember last summer and all the action in town. 232,000 people attended events from the Pukekohe V8’s to concerts in the park. This directly added $10.3 million to the local econ-omy and visitors added a further $73.1 million in accommodation and general spending.

And thinking about the longer term, 11,000 hectares of land has been identified to accom-modate that growth in population over the next 30 years. This Future Urban Land Sup-ply Strategy shows where housing can go in 5 year tranches to inform infrastructure provid-ers where and when to build the pipes, roads and parks. More detail around this work will be out early 2016. This approach to planning hasn’t been done before but is absolutely es-

sential in the delivery of cost effective infra-structure. This work will be reviewed every 5 years to ensure we can adapt to the realities of intensification.

In addition to this there is collaborative work being done with the government on a 30 year transport plan called the “Auckland Transport Alignment Project”. The aim here is to have council and the government agree on the de-livery of the essential improvements required in all modes of transport for the whole of the city. That could be tracking third train line to increase passenger and freight rail services, extensions to train electrification, improve-ments to motorways, arterials and feeder roads, and safe cycleways and walkways. It might also include light rail, technological innovations such as driverless cars, dedicat-ed freight lanes, or robotics at ports. What-ever new options become available, priority transport projects can be aligned to the land supply expectations, the long term funding requirements and the inputs from the crown. In essence, this is weaving a strong rope of in-formation, project prioritisation and delivery. Again, this has never been done before and the council is encouraged by the engagement with this work from the Ministers of Finance and Transport.

But it’s not all roads and houses. A large un-dertaking over the past 5 years has been re-viewing legacy council by-laws. There were 158, there are now 20! This required thousands of hours of consultation and deliberation. Council’s policy and compliance staff man-age and uphold these bylaws. This is not easy work yet has to be done to ensure compliance is practical. Challenging.

Lastly, there must be mention of the “Em-powered Communities” policy. This is simply a series of programs to enable the thousands of wonderful volunteers in our communities to be able to effectively and safely deliver pro-jects. That may be a park bench, a playground, a tree planting project, or a recreational space. Driven by Local Boards, the focus will be on local experts and active community involve-ment. A couple of great examples are the Wai-uku Mudlarks and the Whau Walkway project. The focus remains on effective delivery.

Auckland Council by its very nature will al-ways be a challenge. We are NZ’s international city and must compete internationally. Auck-land also needs to have people putting their shoulder to the wheel, doing their bit, and working with the city. We do have a place to be proud of in this multi-faceted town of ours, this Auckland. Are you up for the challenge?
