Over the years this family has been growing, and some of the people who have filled the role have had a great reluctance, others have just pretended (you could substitute “active denial” for “pretend”) that they didn’t know what the job was and some simply swooshed in and out of the role in such a natural way that one would never suspect that they had hoped of missing the opportunity of being C. It is in each memory and in each act we undertake that makes our life extraordinary. Only as a C.O.P., I had to find some level of acceptance and this was something I knew about. If there’s a chink in your armour, a glitch in your schedule, a bump in your road or a snafu harshing on your mellow—try to remember to just laugh. So, my first step -- dust off my sense of humour... not a quick fix, and it does not trivialize life’s struggles. It allows a sensitive self-effacing approach to getting over yourself -- so I’m told!! And told and told! If you look back to the beginning of this para- graph I put the word “HOPED” in quotes to draw it to your attention because part of the lesson I learned through this exercise is a new appreciation for the value of HOPE.

THE POSSIBILITY OF ALL - HOPE

Submitted by Bill Miller, C.O.P in Training

Well, I have finally given myself permission to begin my training for the very official title of C. O. P. In our family this is a role that has been filled by a far-ranging group of individuals. O. P. Ohhhh! — by the way C.O.P. stands for Chief Old Person.

I had “HOPED” for a while that we (meaning I) might by-pass that point in life much like the expressway skirts around the quaint and fragile villages as it rushes through the countryside. And yet, I realized I would be missing some of the same beauty that I miss when I travel the expressway ... in the small anonymous monotonous every-single-day acts we must become aware and try to find the extraordinary moments of life and cling to those even as we race through the hilltops and the valleys of life. If you look back to the beginning of this para-graph I put the word “HOPED” in quotes to draw it to your attention because part of the lesson I learned through this exercise is a new appreciation for the value of HOPE.

The possibility of all - Hope cont.

In the world we are living in, a Star is something you wish upon -- while hoping that your wish may come true. The root of the word wilderness is wild. That can often mean chaotic, uncontrollable, random and frequently, hostile. As our modern society spins ever faster, elements such as these surface, placing us in the middle of a modern wil-derness; occasionally we will chafe against our commitments, and yell and scream and sometimes rage at God. But we always return to the Hope we have locked in our hearts, to the strength of promise -- our vow to God and God's promise to us ....If we look with Hope and realize that Hope does not mean just wishing, then we see that in God’s higher world -- in His spiritual kingdom -- your HOPE is your Star. Your hope and belief is what connects you to God. In times of wilderness my saving strength is HOPE that I carry with me and in that I am never alone. God is with me. He has given us the very Star that we are Hoping for. I believe whether it comes true or not depends on one thing and one thing only: how faithfully you keep your Star in sight.

We learn our values as we grow up. If we grow up in families of love, hope and justice, we will at least be hopeful of loving and of being just. We will have no use for hypo- crisy. By being those conditions when we act them out, we can live them from the heart. If we do not, no amount of promising to be “good” will make the future better. So the virtues, the greatest of which (as we have all heard) is love... and from this C.O.P. I add my vote for HOPE. The reason we should hope for the success of others -- even if we temporarily fail -- is because time and again it has been proven that whatever per-fection one person can achieve . . . becomes the possibility of all.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in

believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may

abound in hope. - Romans 15:13

CHAT FROM THE CHAIR

More than this: we even exult in our present sufferings,

because we know that suffering is a source of endurance,

endurance of approval and approval of hope.

Such hope is no fantasy; through the Holy Spirit he has given us,

God’s love has flooded our hearts. Romans 5:3-5

I appreciate that Easter is but a memory to most of you by the time you read this copy of the Epistle, but this past one had a very striking moment for me. As you will read in my report of the Joint Search committee, we had just endured a very depressing and disappointing two weeks in our search. I was a little confused on what had happened and was trying to figure out some answers. (Unfortunately, because of confidentiality, I cannot share that with you.)

To ease my mind I went shopping at the local grocery store. As I rolled through the aisles I contemplated the usual mundane requirements of our household needs. As it had been quite a busy two weeks I hadn’t really thought a whole lot about Easter. As I pushed my cart towards the cashier, I ran into a display of Easter lilies. I smiled; it was that beautiful white flower, the beginning of spring; that symbol of renewed life. I thought of Easter, the message that Jesus gave us. He died for us and we are for-given. We begin again.

May the message of Easter give you joy; may the Spirit flood into your heart.

God Bless.

Bill Sheaves

MEET YOUR COUNCIL – AN ARTICLE SERIES Submitted by Stuart McLean

May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony

with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice

glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. ~Romans 15:5-6

As we continue with our Meet Your Council article series, we just wanted to remind you that the Church Council is comprised of the following highly capable individuals who lead various teams and committees within the church:

So far, we’ve heard from Scott McMullen, Linda Westendorp and Wendy Mason. This article will focus on Robert Hunt and Sonja O’Brien. Robert is the Chair of the Finance Committee, and Sonja is the Chair of Christian Education.

Here are the excerpts from our interview with Robert Hunt:

How long have you lived in the Durham Region? I have lived in the Durham Region since 1992.

How long have you been a member of St. Paul's? I have been a member here for about eight years when I transferred my United Church membership from a congregation in Toronto to here.

Meet your Council cont.

What brought you to St. Paul's? I went to several different churches in the area primarily at Christmas and Easter, looking for a church home. I think what made St. Paul’s my choice was the warm welcome we received from the Minister and the peacefulness of the Easter Sunday Sunrise Service by the lake.

What is your favourite highlight or memory of St. Paul's? I find particular comfort in the midnight Christmas Service at St. Paul’s, in particular the forming of and holding hands in a circle and the lighting of the candles. It brings me closer to the Lord and strengthens the sense of community I feel from this congregation.

How long have you been a member of the Council? I have been a member of Council ever since the last Chair of Finance resigned and I assumed that role. I think it has been about eight years now.

Why did you decide to accept a nomination for Council? I was told the time commitment would only be for a couple of hours a month and slightly more at budget time. God has forgiven the understatement.

What are you hoping to achieve with your committee this year?

The primary role of finance is to gather data, monitor and report to Council and the Congrega-tion about how the donations and expenses of St. Paul’s are used to further the work of St. Paul’s both locally and in the world at large. I hope to be able to present this data to everyone in a positive and constructive manner as we transition into the congregation that God is now calling us to be.

Here are the excerpts from our interview with Sonja O’Brien:

How long have you lived in the Durham Region? All my life – I was born at the Ajax Pickering Hospital and have lived in

Ajax ever since!

How long have you been a member of St. Paul's? For as long as I can remember! I was baptized by Rev. Batstone,

went through church school and was confirmed when I was 13.

Meet your Council cont.

What brought you to St. Paul's? Well, initially it was my Mom (Marie Nesbitt) that was the driving force behind my atten-dance (a familiar story for many mothers, I think!) and I later got much more involved when I joined CGIT at age 12. Attending University made it difficult to stay involved and for a few years I wasn’t around much. After graduating and finding work, I found myself missing the sense of community the church gave me, so I found my way back!

What is your favourite highlight or memory of St. Paul's? I have far too many favourite moments and memories over the years to choose just one! However, I do have vivid memories of the Church School Picnics we used to have in June each year. Everyone would bring lawn chairs and blankets and we would all spill out onto the lawn after service. The ‘Dads’ would BBQ up burgers and hotdogs and everyone would enjoy a nice lunch. After eating it was time for games – three-legged races, water balloon toss – and then ice cream for dessert. These picnics are some of my most cherished childhood memories.

How long have you been a member of the Council? I volunteered to Chair the Christian Education Committee in November of 2011.

Why did you decide to accept a nomination for Council?

Well, Cathy Shaw made it hard to say no! I’m kidding! I wanted to get more involved and was looking for a committee I could volunteer with, so when CE Chair became available it seemed like a great opportunity!

What are you hoping to achieve with your committee this year?

Well, I would love to organize a revival of the Church School Picnic! I’m also working on getting some more volunteers to help in the running of our Church School, as well as meeting with our current Church School Teachers to look at future curriculum for the kids.

We’d like to thank both Robert and Sonja for taking time out of their busy schedules and shar-ing a little bit of themselves with us today. Please stay tuned as we continue to bring you de-tails about other Council members over the coming months.

OUTREACH

HEALTHY SNACK PROGRAM

– BOLTON C. FALBY PUBLIC SCHOOL

Submitted by Diane Fleming

St Paul’s “Angels” helping God’s children in our community!

The students and the staff at Bolton C. Falby Public School are very grateful for the dedication and commitment of the many “angels” who contribute their time and talents to this very important program. The program ends for this term on June 07.

The program is offered four days a week with Tuesdays and Thursdays handled by the fol-lowing team members: Isobel Taylor, Delmer Coull, Debbie McAdam, Rolly Grant, Reg Carter from St Paul’s, and Pat Stokes from St. Bernadette’s.

Preparing snacks for 610 students in the early hours of the morning was a real commitment. Many thanks to all!

WOMEN WANTED Submitted by Lois Craig

This is your chance to give back to all the men in your life. Yes, it is time for the Women’s Choir! There will be two brief practices on Sundays, June 3 and 10, at 12:15 pm just after time for coffee and chat while Lois works with the Junior Choir. The song that you will learn will be sung during the Father’s Day service, June 17.

Plan to come and bring a friend or two! Last time we did this, 12 women participated. Let’s have more this time.

P.S. It’s fun.

Healthy, but We Still Need to Go to the Gym.

Our financial position so far this year is somewhat on track with our budget forecast, but we must still be cautious going forward. Fortunately, many committees have been prudent in controlling their expenses. What then is the concern? Givings. Givings are $4,597 below the budget numbers that this congregation approved at the last annual meeting. The approved increase in givings was 3% over the previous year’s givings and yet, givings are below budget? Each of us, as individual congregants, must prayerfully consider if and how we can meet that givings commitment. Stewardship is an important concept both in biblical times and today. Jesus calls upon us to help those in need wherever they may be. All of us, whether rich or poor, have basic needs - food, shelter, and safety. Through your givings, St. Paul’s is able to help people in need.

Have you ever wondered what St. Paul’s does with your givings? Are you interested in the financial workings of your congregation? Anyone can attend a finance committee meeting. (Name a Church committee that doesn’t welcome anyone and everyone!). If you would like to attend a finance meeting and put forward some ideas or just to listen, please e-mail Robert Hunt at [email protected] or call him at (416) 458-5888.

Summer is coming and many of you will either “staycation” or vacation in the coming months. Either way, you may not be attending Sunday morning services. Please con-sider PAR as part of your givings plan. PAR is an acronym for Pre-Authorized Remit-tance. PAR means that when you are unable to attend services on Sunday, your giv-ings will still help St. Paul’s in your absence. PAR donations can be started, stopped or modified at any time. All you have to do is contact our Envelope Steward, Dorothy Wilkins. She will help you with your PAR. PAR is very important to St. Paul’s. St. Paul’s needs your givings and through PAR, we can “count” on them throughout the summer. Please make PAR a part, not necessarily all, of your regular givings plan.

Your givings, no matter how great or small, are appreciated. Your givings are what helps keep St. Paul's a place for you to reach out to for prayer, for comfort, for social interaction, and for help.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN’T SING Submitted by Lois Craig

Someone told you, at some point in your life, that you can’t sing. Several years ago I worked with a many who had been told that. He discovered that he had a fabulous voice, with quite an extensive range. All he was lacking was experience since he had bought into some else’s opinion about his singing.

Singing is a skill. When you contact me, we will meet to evaluate your particular situa-tion. Perhaps you need practice matching pitch –that is singing the same note as the piano plays. Perhaps it’s your breathing. Learning to support your sound with your breath is important and with experience becomes easy. Singing can become fun.

CANADIAN TIRE MONEY !!! Submitted by Deb McAdam

As the person who collects the donations of Canadian Tire Money I want to say a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who is filling the envelope in the narthex. It has already far surpassed the amount collected all of last year.

This money is taken to Camp-Quin-Mo-Lac in September during the UCW week-end. Trevor White, director of the camp, said at the UCW Annual meeting in Brooklin that our donations make a big impact. It helps cover so many incidentals for camp. This camp gives an opportunity for Christian camping to over 1,000 children each year at a cost much cheaper than other overnight camps due to the continued support of the Bay of Quinte Conference.

Keep us in mind over the summer as you do your shopping for the home and garden. Bless you and Thank You.

GARAGE SALE Submitted by Grace Sheaves

Our garage sale on April 21st was a great success ($1600 profit) due to the wonderful display of team work from our church. Thank you for the donations, the communication and sign work, the UCW organizers, the set-up volunteers (Men's Club), the sorters, the pricers, muffin makers, sales staff, take-down crew, and anyone else who we missed. We could not have done it without you. Most of the remain-ing treasures were taken to various donation points within Ajax.

Mark your calendar for our Nov. 3rd Bazaar that will

feature new items.

WANTED: PROPERTY CHAIR Submitted by Wilma Brown, Past Chair of Property

Over the last three years your Property committee completed several projects to assure that St. Paul’s continues to be a safe, attractive place in which to worship.

To date, no one has come forward to chair this important committee within our church. Surely there is someone within our congregation who is willing to accept this position. We must ensure that the church building and the surrounding property continue to be a priority.

Please call Linda Westendorp if you, or someone you know, are interested. Thank you!

All it takes is one bloom of hope to make a spiritual garden.

MY MOTHER’S GARDEN Submitted by Jean Severs

My Mother kept a garden, a garden of the heart,

She planted all the good things that gave my life its start.

She turned me to the sunshine and encouraged me to dream,

Fostering and nurturing the seeds of self-esteem...

And when the winds and rain came, she protected me enough

But not too much because she knew I'd need to stand up strong and tough.

Her constant good example always taught me right from wrong

Markers for my pathway that will last a lifetime long.

I am my Mother's garden. I am her legacy

And I hope today she feels the love reflected back from me.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

NEW OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE! Submitted by Sonja O’Brien

Wanted: Messengers Leader

St. Paul’s Messenger Group is looking for a new leader. Messengers is a group for girls ages 6-8 (or grades 1-3). It’s the first level of a 3-level program for girls in the United Church. Explorers (ages 9 to 11) and CGIT (ages 12 to 17) are the other two.

The Messengers meet once a week on Wednesday nights from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm. Our current group has five girls who regularly attend. A normal meeting might consist of a craft or game, a snack and some time to chat.

Our group has been led by Nancy Lomax and her family for almost eight years, and she is looking for someone to assist her for the next year and eventually take over in two years’ time. If this sounds like an opportunity you would be interested in, please speak with Nancy Lomax after church any Sunday, or contact myself, Sonja O’Brien at [email protected] or 905-683-6472.

Wanted: Church School Co-ordinator

Our Church School program, GAPP, has been run by Valerie Mandarich and Alison Siefert for the past few years, with Melanie Maxwell helping out during the past year. Cathy Shaw provided direction in helping to prepare lessons and recruiting extra help, but as she has had to focus on Jeff this past year, our church school is feeling the need for a church school co-ordinator more than ever. The person in this role would help to prepare lessons/purchase curriculum, help recruit church school teachers, oversee a roster of volunteers to help in the nursery each week, as well as organize other Church School related events such as the White Gift Service and Palm Sunday. If you’d like to talk more about this opportunity, please contact myself, Sonja O’Brien at [email protected] or 905 683 6472.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT! Submitted by Martine Miller

“Food For Thought”: Ideas that feed the imagination, and thoughts on which one can chew and consider. I have been considering the thought of raising money for those in need for a while. It is my goal to help as many families as possible…however to do that, I need your help.

There are a number of foundations around for people like me or you to donate money. They build wells in communities in Africa so that the walk is significantly shorter for people getting water. They buy food for children to eat; they build schools for children to get the education they deserve. It’s admirable to see a group of people working for the same cause. I want to do the same, will you help?

“Food For Thought” is the name of my event. It takes place the afternoon of May 12th at 2:00! It’s an opportunity for fun and for friends and family to get together. It is both a scav-enger hunt and a car rally with the theme of Bananas. I credit my idea to a CGIT scavenger hunt done a number of years ago. The hunt/rally is done in teams of 2-6 people and on completion you will enjoy a BBQ dinner with a live band and silent auction. The fee for each team is $60 (team of 6=$10/person, team of 2=$30/person etc.).

If you would like to attend the BBQ only, tickets will be $4 for Children/Seniors and $6 for Adults. For further information please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 905-686-0258.

THE WORK OF THE JOINT SEARCH COMMITTEE CONTINUES Submitted by Bill Sheaves

I wish I had good news for you but unfortunately, I don’t. We have had so many meet-ings that I have lost count, but we usually meet once a week and on the odd time, twice. We have worn out two Presbytery reps and are on our third. (The Rev. Service, we know, had a good reason for leaving the committee.) My thanks to Ted Bazeley - who has been with us since the JNAC - and to the Rev. Elaine Hall, who is the latest addition to our group.

Joking aside, your JSC is a dedicated and hard-working group. Up to this date we have advertised our call and have received twenty-six applications. The vast majority have been from across Canada but also Europe, Africa, United States and the Carib-bean. We have sorted through them, visited numerous churches and started first and second interviews. Sadly nothing has progressed past this stage for various reasons. No one is more disappointed than your JSC.

We are reviewing the applications and have started to visit more churches. There are more interviews coming up. We are committed to find the best minister for our church. We know the Spirit is guiding us.

Until later, God Bless.

Thank you to everyone for the get well cards

that were sent.

Thank you.
