A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar Disagreements are common in families. But what would you say if Jesus posed the same question “What are you arguing about?” Is it silly and petty? Is it an attempt to impose your will and control on another. Today Jesus tells us and his disci-ples to give it up. We are meant to serve each other, not con-trol.

From the Pastors Desk

Greetings in Christ! Of course, I’m typing this prior to my shoulder surgery, but I want to say thanks to all for your prayers and patience! As I mentioned at the end of last weekend’s homily, Bishop Swain recently turned 75 years of age. Happy Birthday to him! Upon reaching that age, by Canon Law, he is to submit his letter of resignation to the Pope. Until he learns of it being accepted, he is still our Ordinary (has governing jurisdiction over the diocese). We know from past experience it can take a while before we learn who our new Ordinary will be. In the meantime, Bishop Swain encourages us to pray regularly the following prayer: Heavenly Father, you sent Jesus to shepherd your people and the Holy Spirit to make your people one. Look with favor upon those who will select our new bishop. Give them your vi-sion and let their judgment be clear. Speak your will to them. We thank you for our past shepherds and the blessings they have been for the people of this diocese. Lord, send your Holy Spirit to anoint our new bishop that he may continue the work of renewal in the Church, and unite our parishes, priests and people in love, truth and wisdom. Give him a true shep-herd’s heart like that of Jesus, that he may give strength to the weak, heal the brokenheart-ed, console the lonely, bring back the wandering and be a power against the evil of our day. In the powerful name of Jesus, we pray. I encourage you to clip this prayer out of this bulletin and aim to pray it daily at home. Also, during each day, offer up some simple heartfelt prayers for Bishop Swain and for whoever will be the next Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux Falls. The Confirmation candidates who have started on their doctrine testing with me have done a good job, so far. I am pleased. Please keep our Confirmation and First Communion candidates in your prayers from both parishes. Mark your calendars! Our annual parish soup/chili cook-off fundraiser will be Saturday even-

ing, October 27th following the Saturday afternoon Mass. More details to be announced.

Stay tuned!

Your skills are needed! Does anyone have some woodworking skills and a little spare time they would like to share with the parish. We have a couple small pro-jects in the church office. contact Jill if you are interested in helping out. 366-4199 or email [email protected]

Chili & Soup Extravaganza, Saturday, October, 27

We've had such a blast the last few years that we're going to keep on having fun!

This year we're going to switch things up just a bit. We'll be asking for 6 roasters of chili and 6 roasters of soup. Feel free to partner up with an-other family and work together on a roaster to bring. If you're up for it, we'd love to see you cre-ate a theme for your chili/soup and dress up your table and yourself!!

Each family should have received an email from Sarah Wek via Sign-up Genie. If you did not, please contact the parish office to see if we have your correct email.

Lands Lutheran Harvest Festival Sunday, October 7 from 11:30-1:30 p.m. Roast beef, banquet potatoes, salads, buns, desserts. Adults $12, kids 5-10 $5, under 5 free. Raffle tickets for various gift baskets, winner drawn at 1:30.

Pope Benedict XVI on Life…“We are well aware that all too often … life is exalted as long as it is pleasurable, but there is a ten-dency to no longer respect it as soon as it is sick or handicapped. Based on deep love for every person it is possible instead to put into practice effective forms of service to life: to newborn life and to life marked by marginalization or suffering, especially in its terminal phase. The Virgin Mary received with perfect love the Word of life, Jesus Christ, who came into the world so that human beings might "have life... abundantly" (Jn 10: 10). Let us entrust to her expectant mothers, families, health-care workers and volunteers who are committed in so many ways to the service of life. Let us pray in particular for people in the most diffi-cult situations” (Angelus, February 5, 2006).

Be sure to take a look at the sign-up sheet located in the dining hall. We are looking for volunteers to serve coffee and rolls for our monthly Sunday Morning brunch after Mass.
