WelcomeThis summer we’ve programmed a season of festivals with something for everyone, including an opportunity for The Point to get out into the sunshine and bring some fantastic shows to you.

We’ve created a colour coded pathway for you to find your way through the brochure:

Pre-Festival Warm Up

A chance to warm-up with some great dance, including premieres by Charles Linehan Company and Point associate artist Charlotte Spencer.

Dance Festival

Two weeks of enjoyable dance performances and events offer the perfect time to try something new, whether that’s taking part in a free workshop or watching some of the latest hip hop talent.

Music Festival

This year’s music festival welcomes Eliza Carthy Band, Stornoway and Deer Tick, as well as offering free performances and events for everyone.

Without Borders Festival

A festival of new theatre that pushes the boundaries of performance. Including theatre in a vintage VW campervan and into the countryside of Itchen Valley Country Park for The Jungle Book.

Family Festival

There’s also plenty going on for our littlest audience members, including Landscapes – which takes place in a wonderful canvas dome; and Jumping Mouse - a fun-packed adventure for the whole family.

We’re really proud of our summer festivals and hope that we’ve found a way of offering everyone a chance to get involved.

Watch This Space : Without Borders

This season’s exhibition explores the theme of Without Borders.

The exhibition consider’s how we break down the boundaries of place and space. Featuring artists Steven Fraser, Susan Eyre, Platform 4, Gillian Trotman, Stuart Carter, Les Bicknell, Fiona Thompson and David Palacios.


Charles Linehan Company presents

The Fault Index and The Clearing Wednesday 11th May 7.30pm

Following creation time spent at The Point, Charles Linehan Company returns to present the premiere of a new work, The Fault Index, as part of a double bill with The Clearing. Each work displays the understated eloquence and elegance for which the company is acclaimed.

The Fault Index is a celebration of isolated events, a series of connected and unconnected incidents presented in a different order for each performance. At its heart are three ensemble pieces that weave together disparate and independent choreographic elements in a percussive and spirited tour de force.

The Clearing features four dancers including long-term collaborators Rahel Vonmoos and Greig Cooke, with a commissioned score by Richard Skelton.

Slow transformations evolve within a complex weave of interlocking melodies, off-rhythms and beautiful sonorities.

Charlotte Spencer presents

The Nature of Things Wednesday 18th May 6.30pm

Prior to Yael Flexer and Nic Sandiland’s The Living Room will be the chance to watch the premiere performance by Point associate artist Charlotte Spencer.

Performed in the Creation Space and travelling to the Garden Stage, The Nature of Things evolves a new ecology of movement, sound and space by exploring

the living patterning that can be found at every level of our existence.

Together the dance and live acoustic soundscape creates a detailed, rich and spatially expansive world.

Yael Flexer & Nic Sandiland/Dance and Digital Works

The Living Room Wednesday 18th May 7.30pm

The Living Room is an intimate dance set in what appears to be the bare bones of a living or rehearsal room.

The performers interfere or seemingly assist each other’s solo moment, together inhabiting an imagined domestic space. The work cuts intricate movement with informal banter and wry humour, as the performers struggle to live through another show.

Yael Flexer’s distinctive choreography effortlessly intertwines witty delivery with dance that is fast paced and emotionally driven. Music is by Nye Parry and cellist Karni Postel.

Lighting is by Michael Mannion and dramaturgy by artist Gary Stevens.

A short curtain raiser will be performed by Hampshire Youth Dance Company who worked with Yael Flexer’s company for four days. The piece is based on the choreographic process and materials from The Living Room.

A FREE fun-packed outdoor day of dance.

Celebrate the start of this year’s festival by dancing into Eastleigh, with exciting activities and events for the whole family on Leigh Road recreation ground.

From 10.00am there will be opportunities for all ages to take part in a variety of free dance classes, some of which The Point offers throughout the year, including hip hop, belly, tap, ballet and creative dance. Come along and try out something new.

Jump Out Saturday 11th June 10.00am - 4.00pm

If you’d rather watch others do the dancing, take a stroll around the park and watch one of the many dance displays including breakdance, salsa and street dance.

At 2.00pm grab an ice cream and watch Jump Out - a free outdoor performance on The Point’s Garden Stage that will showcase some of the best dance talent within the south east region.

Pull on those pointe shoes and enjoy an evening of ballet at The Point.

This beautiful dance form has this year seen an overwhelming rise in popularity and to mark this, we’d like to invite you to take part in a ballet workshop before enjoying the critically-acclaimed movie Black Swan. You could even make an evening of it and enjoy a delicious meal from our café bar to refuel after your class.

5.00 – 6.30pm Beginners ballet (adults, for ages 16+) Perfect for those who have always wanted to try ballet but didn’t know where to start. This friendly class will offer participants the chance to have a go at learning the basic ballet steps and sequences.

5.00 – 6.30pm Advanced master-class (adults, for ages 16+) Test your ballet skills with an advanced masterclass taught by one of The Royal Ballet School’s highly experienced teachers. A challenging and technical class for those with a good standard of previous ballet experience.

Lîla Dance presents

In Our Blood

Thursday 16th June 7.30pm

A collection of three striking works that illustrates Lîla Dance’s exceptional gripping

and emotive dance vocabulary.

Inspired by the potential of dance to communicate the most intangible and emotional of human

experiences, Point associate Lîla Dance presents A Readiness, Tracker and Not About Love,

choreographed by Yael Flexer.

Propelling the work forward in all three pieces is Lîla’s ability to combine intense dynamic physicality with

raw emotional sensitivity, in turn drawing audiences into a world created on stage.

The performance will feature a special curtain raiser performance by Hampshire Youth Dance Company, commissioned by Hampshire Dance

and choreographed by Lîla Dance.

Exclusive opportunity to work with Lîla Dance

We are looking for adult dancers (aged 21+) to take part in a choreographic project with Lîla Dance.

Participants must have previous dance experience and be able to commit to four workshop days leading

up to a performance prior to In Our Blood. This unique project costs £30. For more information contact

Following the success of last year’s Streetz Breakin’Beatz event, we are delighted to announce its return.

Last year, dance crew Peridot stole the show and, with audiences shouting for more, we thought it was only fair to invite them back to present a whole night of hip hop talent.

Previous UK Hip Hop Champions Peridot wowed TV audiences across the country in Britain’s Got Talent and even performed at the MOBO awards. This performance will feature Hampshire’s hottest hip hop youth company NoCo.

Fashionista 6.30pmThe Point, in collaboration with Winchester School of Art’s fashion students, is delighted to present an exciting pre-show event with a twist. Point associate artists

and members of The Point’s Youth Dance Company will showcase the school of art’s cutting-edge fashion designs to the sounds of a live DJ. The catwalk show forms part of South Hampshire’s Creative Industries Festival.

Join professional company Commotion Dance to create a new dance piece in a day.

This fun workshop will be a chance to express your own ideas and work creatively with other young dancers culminating in a performance at The Point’s Hothouse community dance showcase on Saturday 25th June. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.

For children aged 3 – 7 and their families.

Join Commotion Dance and take a peek at a world of hide and seek. With dancing, music and all things

Point associate company Commotion Dance presents a fun and lively world of movement and creativity.

Perfect for Key Stage 1 children, this performance offers an engaging and stimulating way for

children to learn through dance.

It’s a Small WorldTuesday 14th June 1.00pmTo celebrate the opening of The Berry Theatre in Hedge End, primary school pupils from the south of the borough will perform theatrical dance pieces on The Point’s outdoor Garden Stage. Pupils have been working with students from Wildern School in weekly dance clubs to create this special performance, which this year takes on a fairytale theme.

Free event, just come along to The Point’s Garden Stage on Leigh Road recreation ground.

Pointing the Way – Careers DayThursday 16th June 3.00pm – 6.30pm

Are you wondering what to do after your GCSE, A Level or Degree in dance, drama or music? Then come along to The Point’s Careers Day where you will have the opportunity to take part in practical workshops, receive advice from our team of professionals, browse information stalls from national universities and arts institutions and potentially take that next step towards your dream job.

Four days of exceptional music performances and eventsThis year’s music festival looks a little different with celebrations now running for four nights and events taking place not only on Leigh Road recreation ground, but also inside The Point. So there’s no need to worry about the British summertime ruining the fun.

Friday 8th July 6pm

Stornoway + guestsOxford indie-folk band Stornoway headline the Friday of this year’s festival with the North Sea Radio Orchestra. The band’s captivating sound combines idyllic melodies, beautiful harmonies, swelling strings and charming lyrics that exude a youthful, wide-eyed view of the world.

Stornoway’s first album Beachcomber’s Windowsill received outstanding reviews and, following appearances on Later… With Jools Holland, the band was shortlisted for Radio 1’s Sound of 2010.This spring they release their eagerly anticipated follow-up album and embark on a series of festival appearances including Isle of Wight Festival and Glastonbury.

Eliza Carthy Band + guestsA truly inventive singer and fiddle player, Eliza is arguably the most impressive and engaging folk performer of her generation. The daughter of music legends Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson, she is firmly an artist of her own making, winning two Mercury Music Prize nominations and innumerable other accolades over a glittering 15-year career. The release of her new album in May promises a performance of new material that is visceral, exciting, intense and emotional.

Sunday 10th July 6pm

Bollywood Brass Band + guests The festival will be brought to a close with the uplifting and compulsively danceable sounds of The Bollywood Brass Band.

Wielding saxophones, tabla, dhol drums and a colossal sousaphone, the band will present its unique sound, splicing exuberant Bhangra beats, Punjabi rhythms and Bollywood tunes.

Deer Tick + guests Saturday sees an eclectic, not-to-be-missed, line-up of alt-country/rock, featuring the beautifully crafted songs of Deer Tick.

The Point Youth Theatre presents Rudyard Kipling’s

Adapted by Neil DuffieldTuesday 2nd - Sunday 7th August 7.00pm

A magical, outdoor performance in the stunning surroundings of Itchen Valley Country Park.

Join Mowgli, the boy raised by wolves, on an extraordinary adventure through the jungle with his friends, Baloo and Bagheera. As they set out on a quest to discover the deadly secret of man’s red flower, they soon realise that not far behind is the evil tiger Shere Khan. Can they escape their enemy’s clutches or will Mowgli discover the real danger isn’t within the jungle at all?

The Point Youth Theatre performs this delightful tale in the stunning surroundings of Itchen Valley Country Park. Performed in promenade, audiences will see The Jungle Book in a new light as they are led through the woodland by actors and live musicians, meeting a host of curious critters and mischievous monkeys along the way.

The award-winning The River People present a magical story told in the unique setting of a gypsy wagon with a fold-out stage.

Within the wagon are four storytellers who tell the tale of Little Matter, about a miserable man who spends his days working in the grey city. One day he is forced to face his demons and overcome them, or allow his lonely little world to fall apart.

Laura Mugridge presents

Recreating the beauty of the great outdoors inside the campervan, Laura invites audiences on an intimate journey from Land’s End to Edinburgh, sharing her experience of marriage, camping and her love of the good life.

With her own brand of quirky and charming comedy, Laura describes a journey that involves fell running and a performance in front of three kestrels: a joyful investigation into the beauty and complexity of domestic life.

King Lear (in terrorem) An exploration of control, state and power. Ideas and fragments for the development of a retelling of King Lear exploring the classic text through the contemporary lens of war in the 21st Century.

Join two of the UK’s most popular and unique comedians for an evening of stand-up, prior to this summer’s Edinburgh Festival.

Andrew O’Neill is known the world over as the only metalhead, vegan transvestite comedian around. He’s sold out shows at the Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne Comedy Festival and been on several UK tours and you may have spotted him on the new series of ‘Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle’.

The Associate Showcase



EmergeSaturday 21st May 11am-4pmThe Emerge Festival will once again visit Eastleigh; bringing together vibrant and imaginative street performances from emerging street artists in various outdoor locations around the town.

Performances will include crazy walkabout shows in the town centre to acrobatics in the park. A second event will be held in Winchester on Sunday 22nd May.

Charles LinehanCelebrated dance artist Charles Linehan will lead an exploration of ideas from his latest works The Fault Index and The Clearing. Early Years Interactive South East Dance, in association with The Point, is offering a training opportunity for dance practitioners to take part, learn, observe, and reflect on creating dance performance for early years (ages 0-3). Gain practical tools from lead artist Adesola Akinleye who creates inspiring work for very young audiences.

Unpacked presents

Jumping Mouse

Saturday 30th July 1.00pm

A revved up full-throttle adventure for ages 5+

and their families.

Jump on the second bus! The driver’s saved you a seat.

Come and meet a bullfrog blues band, a clapped-out bison who’s late and a wolf

who’s in a hurry but can’t remember where to...and a most unusual little mouse, who’s

about to have a very big adventure!

This magical show is adapted from a well-loved Native American folk tale and

features a lively combination of puppetry, music, songs and an inventive set made

from parts of an old London bus.

Mimika Theatre presents

LandscapesSunday 24th July 1.00pm, 2.30pm, 4.00pm & 5.30pmThis unique and intimate show for ages 3+ takes children to four landscapes from desert to rainforest, from beneath the sea to Antarctica.

Using elaborate puppets, music and stunning visual effects, the show is a non-verbal exploration of the remarkable atmosphere, rhythms and sounds of the natural world.

Performed in a canvas dome, this is a journey that no child should miss. There will be a chance to meet the company and puppets after the show.

Classic MondayFollowing the success of our first Classic Monday movie, we are delighted to continue the programme which offers the perfect chance to rediscover the silver screen starlets and heartthrobs from yesteryear.

Set in Africa during World War I, this 1951 classic garnered Humphrey Bogart an Oscar for his role as a hard-drinking riverboat captain, who provides passage for a Christian missionary, played by Katharine Hepburn. Taking an instant, mutual dislike to one another, the two endure rough waters to finally fall into one another’s arms.

Monday 25th July Casablanca (PG)

One of the greatest movies of all time, this romantic masterpiece stars Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid. Set during World War II, the movie sees an American expatriate torn between, in the words of one character, love and virtue.

A great way for parents and carers to watch big screen hits without worrying about their babies disturbing movie goers.

With nappy changing facilities and a safe area to leave pushchairs, this is an ideal way to see the best in cinema without having to get a babysitter. Low level lighting is left on, the film’s soundtrack is a tiny bit lower and the relaxed and friendly atmosphere means

Enjoy Sharing Arts Enjoy Sharing Arts is a Creative Arts programme for the over 50s. Sessions take place in a relaxed, social atmosphere. New members are always welcome. From rag rugging to paper crafts and weaving, each term the programme offers another visual arts skill. This term will be acrylic painting. (Term begins week commencing 2nd May).

Chandler’s Ford & Hiltingbury Festival 18th June – 2nd JulyThe Chandler’s Ford & Hiltingbury Festival is a celebration of arts in the community with a packed programme of events that offers something for everyone, including music, dance, theatre, art and food. Elevate Summer School

Taking Part… Take your dance training to the next level with The Point’s intensive summer school.

Elevate offers a taste of professional training and a chance to keep in shape over the summer holidays for young dancers aged 15 – 25 years old who are currently in, or aspiring to be in, professional vocational dance training.


Elevate: Train 8th – 12th August £110 for one week An invaluable week of classes taught by some of the country’s top teachers. Sessions cover a variety of styles including contemporary, ballet and hip hop.

Elevate: Create 15th – 19th August £110 for one week A great opportunity if you have ever thought about being a choreographer but didn’t know where to start. Working with a number of high profile contemporary choreographers, you will learn to choreograph your own dance pieces.

Special offer! Take part in both Elevate: Train and Integrate or Elevate: Create and Integrate for just £170, or take part in all three Elevate weeks for the special price of £270.

Elevate: Integrate 22nd – 26th August £110 for one week Integrate allows dancers the opportunity to work with StopGAP Dance Company, the UK’s leading integrated professional company, in a week focusing on creating integrated performance.

A lively lyrical tale of a theatrical company playing Shakespeare’s ‘Taming of the Shrew’. Kate and Petruchio are mirrored by Lilli and Fred’s tempestuous, capricious love life, the original plot themes as used by The Bard himself. Add into the mix two violin playing gangsters singing ‘Brush Up Your Shakespeare’ and the contemporary illusion is complete. Craig Ogden - The GuitaristSaturday 14th May 8pm Australian Craig Ogden is one of the most exciting artists of his generation and by popular request makes his third appearance here. BBC dubbed him ‘a worthy successor to Julian Bream’. In 2010, Classic FM released ‘Craig Ogden The Guitarist’, a fascinating collection of popular favourites and new works. British Red Cross

Rock ChallengeWednesday 25th May 7.30pm The Rock Challenge® is a unique and exciting opportunity for young people to take part in a dance, drama and design spectacular where the young people are the stars.

Rock Challenge is a national competition, involving over 27,000 young people. Youth Division Rock Challenge focuses on young people outside of mainstream education and is set to be an evening of outstanding achievement.

Changing Tickets: Tickets are non-refundable but can be changed for another performance of the same show incurring an administration fee of £1.
