The Poetry of Asking Questions of Mysterious Creatures

As influenced by the poet Kenneth Koch in Rose, Where Did You Get that Red?

Look at the Powerpoint.

Either draw an image of “Fearful Symmetry”

Or write a poem asking questions of a mysterious creature.

You may want to take the time to read some other sixth graders’ poems in response to this poem in your handout.

What is the speaker asking? What two creatures are compared

and why? How are they alike? Different? Why? How does comparing them illustrate

a “fearful symmetry”? What sort of creature would you like

to question about its existence? Justify your answer.

1) exact balance and matching of two sides along a line of symmetry2) two opposites compared: good and evil or voraciousness and innocence or carnivore and herbivore

The smith also sitteth by the anvil, And fighteth with the heat of the furnace, And noise of the hammer and the anvil is ever in his ears, And his eyes look still upon the pattern of the thing that he maketh. He settethhis mind to finish his work, And waiteth to polish it perfectly.

Ecclesiasticus

The Forests of the Night

Tyger, Tyger. burning bright,In the forests of the night; What immortal hand or eye.Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies.Burnt the fire of thine eyes?On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand, dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder, or what art,Could twist the sinews of thy heart? And when thy heart began to beat. What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? What the chain,In what furnace was thy brain? What the anvil? what dread grasp.Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spearsAnd water'd heaven with their tears:Did He smile his work to see?Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tyger, Tyger burning bright,In the forests of the night:What immortal hand or eye,Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Oh, Daffodil, I hope you never die but last forever.

Oh, Daffodil, live til the sun turns red and the moon turns black. From Rose, Where Did You Get that Red?

Oh Dear Piranha in a pack at night!Who made you so vicious insight? And no matter how much you eat,How would I ever defeate,The death you bring to me.

How does thy shine thy light? That one which brites the night?Be it a switch?A thought? Some twitch? Is it a reactionAt commotion? Is it fear,Or a little emotion?
