How to Use this PowerPoint• This PowerPoint has a story that is written at a first grade readability level. The

grammar parallels the level of complexity found in 1st grade DIBELS passages.• The animation shows children how to “unpack” complex sentences to find the

component simple sentences.• Then, each step in the PowerPoint will show how the simple sentences are

combined to form complex sentences.• The adult should talk about each step (The words ‘They also sell’ occurs in both

sentences so we can erase the second one; These two sentences can be combined with a conjunction; The prepositional phrase can be moved to the front of the sentence for emphasis of that information; You can add an adjective to give more information about the tree .. It is a little tree).

• Have children predict how the sentence will be combined or what information can be deleted or substituted with a pronoun

• Children should read the complex sentence once it is reconstructed. If they don’t read it fluently, review the troublesome parts of the sentence.

• In our research, reading scores and language scores both increased following 6 weeks of practice twice weekly.
